    This paper studied the droplet transport and deposition in the turbulent flow inside a wave-plate eliminator of the waste-heat utilisation complex (WHUC). The Lagrangian discrete particle approach was used to simulate the process of liquid separation from wet steam flow. Two different models for droplet-eddy interaction were tested using data from the available literature. The tested numerical model was used to predict the WHUC performance.

    Local renewable energy resources (RES) are often considered as an alternative to the conventional power supply by means of power lines. This is an urgent approach for rural electrification if there are long distances from main substations, and distribution feeders’ construction and service is not cost effective for grid companies. Nevertheless, the real potential for RES implementation at some regions could be limited by economic, geographical and climatic factors especially. The paper gives a review of the experience of power supply type selection for distant consumers given the specific northern continental conditions. The main goal of the paper is the methods estimating technical and economical efficiency of power supply system alternatives including centralized power supply and standalone microgrid implementation to select suitable power supply variant.

    Abstract In this paper, we discuss a number of ways to define and measure the affordability of energy consumption, and we examine the emergence of energy poverty in Italy in the period from 1998 to 2011. The paper examines the eligibility criteria for claiming the benefits available to support energy consumption for vulnerable families and it identifies the potential beneficiaries. The study assesses the appropriateness of the eligibility criteria by comparing the population targeted by the policy with the population actually facing affordability problems. A simulation exercise, using the hypothetical scenario most likely to result in energy benefits being made available, shows that, regardless of the affordability index adopted, the provision of state energy benefits has little impact on fuel poverty.

    Abstract In this paper, we discuss a number of ways to define and measure the affordability of energy consumption, and we examine the emergence of energy poverty in Italy in the period from 1998 to 2011. The paper examines the eligibility criteria for claiming the benefits available to support energy consumption for vulnerable families and it identifies the potential beneficiaries. The study assesses the appropriateness of the eligibility criteria by comparing the population targeted by the policy with the population actually facing affordability problems. A simulation exercise, using the hypothetical scenario most likely to result in energy benefits being made available, shows that, regardless of the affordability index adopted, the provision of state energy benefits has little impact on fuel poverty.

    Aquaponics systems and technologies are growing primary industries in many countries, with high environmental and socio-economic advantages. Aquaponics is a closed-loop system that produces aquatic animals and plants in a new way using recirculated water and nutrients. With a growing world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, food production sustainability is a primary issue in today’s world agenda, and aquaponics and aquaculture systems can be potential contributors to the challenge. Observing the climate changes and global warming’s impact on the ecosystem, decreasing aqua animal stocks, and responding to increasing demand are turning points in the sustainability era. In the past 15 years, fish production has doubled, thus denoting that aquaponics transforms into commercial scales with a revolutionized production, high efficiency, and fewer resources’ utilization, thus requiring proper operation and management standards and practices. Therefore, this study aims to shape a new framework for sustainable aquaponics modeling and utilization as the all-in-one solution platform covering technical, managerial, socio-economic, institutional, and environmental measures within the suitability requirements. The proposed model in this study offers a systematic approach to the design and implementation of sustainability-efficient aquaponics and aquaculture systems. Through an exhaustive coverage of the topic, this research effort can be counted as a practical reference for researchers, scholars, experts, practitioners, and students in the context of aquaponics and aquaculture studies.

    This study investigated the effects of reaction temperature (300–360 °C), reaction time (0–60 min), and the ratio of raw materials to solvent (1:5–1:15; g/mL) on the HydroThermal Liquefaction (HTL) of Chinese Herb Residues (CHR) for Bio-Oil (BO) production. Optimal HTL conditions for CHR were determined. To enhance both the yield and quality of BO, metal-modified catalysts including Fe/MCM-41, Co/MCM-41, and Ni/MCM-41 were prepared. These catalysts, after hydrogen reduction, loaded metal elements in their elemental state onto the carrier. Subsequently, CHR catalytic HTL experiments were conducted at 330 °C for 15 min with a ratio of 1:10 (g/mL). BO analysis was performed using EA, GC-MS, and FT-IR. Under the optimal HTL conditions (330 °C/15 min/1:10), the BO yield reached 24.57 wt.%, with a Higher Heating Value (HHV) of 25.96 MJ/kg. The major components of the BO included phenols, ketones, acids, and esters. In the catalytic HTL, Fe/MCM-41 (26.15 wt.%), Ni/MCM-41 (26.2 wt.%), and Co/MCM-41 (27.05 wt.%) catalysts each achieved higher BO yields. When using Ni/MCM-41 catalyst, the highest HHV of BO reached 32.01 MJ/kg, representing an 81% improvement over CHR HHV of 17.66 MJ/kg. Additionally, with Fe/MCM-41 catalyst, the lowest oxygen content in BO was 9.68%, and the selectivity for phenols and ketones was the highest, showing increases of 15.22% and 33.15%, respectively, reaching 44.13% and 24.5%. The results indicate that HTL can effectively convert high-moisture CHR into valuable products. Hydrogen-reduced metal-modified catalysts contribute significantly to increasing BO yield, promoting deoxygenation and hydrogenation reactions, and markedly improving HHV and the selectivity of chemical components, thereby effectively enhancing both the yield and quality of BO.

    This study investigated the effects of reaction temperature (300–360 °C), reaction time (0–60 min), and the ratio of raw materials to solvent (1:5–1:15; g/mL) on the HydroThermal Liquefaction (HTL) of Chinese Herb Residues (CHR) for Bio-Oil (BO) production. Optimal HTL conditions for CHR were determined. To enhance both the yield and quality of BO, metal-modified catalysts including Fe/MCM-41, Co/MCM-41, and Ni/MCM-41 were prepared. These catalysts, after hydrogen reduction, loaded metal elements in their elemental state onto the carrier. Subsequently, CHR catalytic HTL experiments were conducted at 330 °C for 15 min with a ratio of 1:10 (g/mL). BO analysis was performed using EA, GC-MS, and FT-IR. Under the optimal HTL conditions (330 °C/15 min/1:10), the BO yield reached 24.57 wt.%, with a Higher Heating Value (HHV) of 25.96 MJ/kg. The major components of the BO included phenols, ketones, acids, and esters. In the catalytic HTL, Fe/MCM-41 (26.15 wt.%), Ni/MCM-41 (26.2 wt.%), and Co/MCM-41 (27.05 wt.%) catalysts each achieved higher BO yields. When using Ni/MCM-41 catalyst, the highest HHV of BO reached 32.01 MJ/kg, representing an 81% improvement over CHR HHV of 17.66 MJ/kg. Additionally, with Fe/MCM-41 catalyst, the lowest oxygen content in BO was 9.68%, and the selectivity for phenols and ketones was the highest, showing increases of 15.22% and 33.15%, respectively, reaching 44.13% and 24.5%. The results indicate that HTL can effectively convert high-moisture CHR into valuable products. Hydrogen-reduced metal-modified catalysts contribute significantly to increasing BO yield, promoting deoxygenation and hydrogenation reactions, and markedly improving HHV and the selectivity of chemical components, thereby effectively enhancing both the yield and quality of BO.

    The advantages and disadvantages of infrared and electrochemical gas analyzers for carbon dioxide CO2 are described. The possibility of using conductometric sensors with distilled water for monitoring the CO2 content in the air has been investigated. Two identical measuring systems were manufactured, each containing two open-type conductometric cells, a matching device and a personal computer. With the help of these complexes, experiments were carried out on the simultaneous measurement of the CO2 content in the air in two places (a laboratory room and a building in a forest, located at a distance of 15 km from each other) with deliberately different daily dynamics of the CO2 level change. A special experiment was carried out, which made it possible to obtain an estimate of the inertia of conductometric cells and a conversion factor for the values of CO2 content into standard units of measurement. It is shown that the daily dynamics of changes in the electrical conductivity of distilled water in open cells corresponds to the expected dynamics of changes in the CO2 content in the rooms where the measurements were carried out. The operability of the measuring complex and the possibility of creating on its basis a device for long-term monitoring of the CO2 content in the air mixture of gases has been confirmed. The principal high selectivity of the measuring complex to CO2 in relation to other gases of the atmosphere has been established.

The Lagrangian discrete particle approach was used to simulate the process of liquid separation from wet steam flow. Two different models for droplet-eddy interaction were tested using data from the available literature. The tested numerical model was used to predict the WHUC performance.

    Local renewable energy resources (RES) are often considered as an alternative to the conventional power supply by means of power lines. This is an urgent approach for rural electrification if there are long distances from main substations, and distribution feeders’ construction and service is not cost effective for grid companies. Nevertheless, the real potential for RES implementation at some regions could be limited by economic, geographical and climatic factors especially. The paper gives a review of the experience of power supply type selection for distant consumers given the specific northern continental conditions. The main goal of the paper is the methods estimating technical and economical efficiency of power supply system alternatives including centralized power supply and standalone microgrid implementation to select suitable power supply variant.

    Local renewable energy resources (RES) are often considered as an alternative to the conventional power supply by means of power lines. This is an urgent approach for rural electrification if there are long distances from main substations, and distribution feeders’ construction and service is not cost effective for grid companies. Nevertheless, the real potential for RES implementation at some regions could be limited by economic, geographical and climatic factors especially. The paper gives a review of the experience of power supply type selection for distant consumers given the specific northern continental conditions. The main goal of the paper is the methods estimating technical and economical efficiency of power supply system alternatives including centralized power supply and standalone microgrid implementation to select suitable power supply variant.

    Abstract In this paper, we discuss a number of ways to define and measure the affordability of energy consumption, and we examine the emergence of energy poverty in Italy in the period from 1998 to 2011. The paper examines the eligibility criteria for claiming the benefits available to support energy consumption for vulnerable families and it identifies the potential beneficiaries. The study assesses the appropriateness of the eligibility criteria by comparing the population targeted by the policy with the population actually facing affordability problems. A simulation exercise, using the hypothetical scenario most likely to result in energy benefits being made available, shows that, regardless of the affordability index adopted, the provision of state energy benefits has little impact on fuel poverty.

    Aquaponics systems and technologies are growing primary industries in many countries, with high environmental and socio-economic advantages. Aquaponics is a closed-loop system that produces aquatic animals and plants in a new way using recirculated water and nutrients. With a growing world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, food production sustainability is a primary issue in today’s world agenda, and aquaponics and aquaculture systems can be potential contributors to the challenge. Observing the climate changes and global warming’s impact on the ecosystem, decreasing aqua animal stocks, and responding to increasing demand are turning points in the sustainability era. In the past 15 years, fish production has doubled, thus denoting that aquaponics transforms into commercial scales with a revolutionized production, high efficiency, and fewer resources’ utilization, thus requiring proper operation and management standards and practices. Therefore, this study aims to shape a new framework for sustainable aquaponics modeling and utilization as the all-in-one solution platform covering technical, managerial, socio-economic, institutional, and environmental measures within the suitability requirements. The proposed model in this study offers a systematic approach to the design and implementation of sustainability-efficient aquaponics and aquaculture systems. Through an exhaustive coverage of the topic, this research effort can be counted as a practical reference for researchers, scholars, experts, practitioners, and students in the context of aquaponics and aquaculture studies.

    Aquaponics systems and technologies are growing primary industries in many countries, with high environmental and socio-economic advantages. Aquaponics is a closed-loop system that produces aquatic animals and plants in a new way using recirculated water and nutrients. With a growing world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, food production sustainability is a primary issue in today’s world agenda, and aquaponics and aquaculture systems can be potential contributors to the challenge. Observing the climate changes and global warming’s impact on the ecosystem, decreasing aqua animal stocks, and responding to increasing demand are turning points in the sustainability era. In the past 15 years, fish production has doubled, thus denoting that aquaponics transforms into commercial scales with a revolutionized production, high efficiency, and fewer resources’ utilization, thus requiring proper operation and management standards and practices. Therefore, this study aims to shape a new framework for sustainable aquaponics modeling and utilization as the all-in-one solution platform covering technical, managerial, socio-economic, institutional, and environmental measures within the suitability requirements. The proposed model in this study offers a systematic approach to the design and implementation of sustainability-efficient aquaponics and aquaculture systems. Through an exhaustive coverage of the topic, this research effort can be counted as a practical reference for researchers, scholars, experts, practitioners, and students in the context of aquaponics and aquaculture studies.

    Abstract The problem of mass transfer during anodic dissolution of vertical wire tungsten electrode in the alkaline solution under the conditions of natural convection is solved numerically. The concentration dependences of ionic diffusion coefficients, solution density and viscosity are taken into account. The distributions of concentrations, current density and potential over the near-anode layer are determined. The dependence of limiting current on the concentration of alkaline solution is obtained. The role of ion migration in the tungsten dissolution is shown. The results are compared with the experimental data.

    This study investigated the effects of reaction temperature (300–360 °C), reaction time (0–60 min), and the ratio of raw materials to solvent (1:5–1:15; g/mL) on the HydroThermal Liquefaction (HTL) of Chinese Herb Residues (CHR) for Bio-Oil (BO) production. Optimal HTL conditions for CHR were determined. To enhance both the yield and quality of BO, metal-modified catalysts including Fe/MCM-41, Co/MCM-41, and Ni/MCM-41 were prepared. These catalysts, after hydrogen reduction, loaded metal elements in their elemental state onto the carrier. Subsequently, CHR catalytic HTL experiments were conducted at 330 °C for 15 min with a ratio of 1:10 (g/mL). BO analysis was performed using EA, GC-MS, and FT-IR. Under the optimal HTL conditions (330 °C/15 min/1:10), the BO yield reached 24.57 wt.%, with a Higher Heating Value (HHV) of 25.96 MJ/kg. The major components of the BO included phenols, ketones, acids, and esters. In the catalytic HTL, Fe/MCM-41 (26.15 wt.%), Ni/MCM-41 (26.2 wt.%), and Co/MCM-41 (27.05 wt.%) catalysts each achieved higher BO yields. When using Ni/MCM-41 catalyst, the highest HHV of BO reached 32.01 MJ/kg, representing an 81% improvement over CHR HHV of 17.66 MJ/kg. Additionally, with Fe/MCM-41 catalyst, the lowest oxygen content in BO was 9.68%, and the selectivity for phenols and ketones was the highest, showing increases of 15.22% and 33.15%, respectively, reaching 44.13% and 24.5%. The results indicate that HTL can effectively convert high-moisture CHR into valuable products. Hydrogen-reduced metal-modified catalysts contribute significantly to increasing BO yield, promoting deoxygenation and hydrogenation reactions, and markedly improving HHV and the selectivity of chemical components, thereby effectively enhancing both the yield and quality of BO.

    The advantages and disadvantages of infrared and electrochemical gas analyzers for carbon dioxide CO2 are described. The possibility of using conductometric sensors with distilled water for monitoring the CO2 content in the air has been investigated. Two identical measuring systems were manufactured, each containing two open-type conductometric cells, a matching device and a personal computer. With the help of these complexes, experiments were carried out on the simultaneous measurement of the CO2 content in the air in two places (a laboratory room and a building in a forest, located at a distance of 15 km from each other) with deliberately different daily dynamics of the CO2 level change. A special experiment was carried out, which made it possible to obtain an estimate of the inertia of conductometric cells and a conversion factor for the values of CO2 content into standard units of measurement. It is shown that the daily dynamics of changes in the electrical conductivity of distilled water in open cells corresponds to the expected dynamics of changes in the CO2 content in the rooms where the measurements were carried out. The operability of the measuring complex and the possibility of creating on its basis a device for long-term monitoring of the CO2 content in the air mixture of gases has been confirmed. The principal high selectivity of the measuring complex to CO2 in relation to other gases of the atmosphere has been established.
