    East Lisbon is being exposed to large-scale urban regeneration processes, where luxury residential projects and mixed-use spatial developments are already underway. Thus, it is a living laboratory for “smart”, “creative” and “green” projects, as well as related urban public space interventions. Braço de Prata is an urban space overlooked by developers, being surrounded by obsolete industrial buildings. Concerning the recent interest in international investments in brownfield regeneration and greenfield developments, it represents an attractive urban terrain as a post-industrial working-class neighbourhood, where “smart” and “green” suggest transforming space so that both new and old residents can live and work together and share public space regardless of analysis on their environmental recognitions. The aim of this paper is to present an empirical evaluation model that examines the possible impacts of environmental negligence through the reorganisation of the physical and social fabric. The analyses focus on dwellers’ moral understanding of their changing environment as site-specific domains to address the unique conditions that affect transiently defined presumptions about the collective needs. Taking an evaluative approach in the Braço de Prata case, this paper demonstrates the specific socio-ecological implications of urban inequality in post-industrial neighbourhoods that could be threatened by new decisions, both through urban planning approaches and instruments.

    With the increasing need for energy in the world, the demand for renewable energy sources is increasing day by day. This increase in energy need directs governments and private sector investors to renewable energy sources. Wind energy is one of the most important renewable energy resources on earth. In recent years, the share of wind energy in the amount of energy produced by renewable energy sources has been increasing. Wind energy emerges as a sustainable energy source due to its environmental friendliness and ability to renew itself. These features of wind energy have a great effect on the increase of its share in the energy sector. In order to get the highest efficiency from wind energy, the correct positioning of wind farms, that is, the concept of site selection is very important. One of the most important parameters in site selection of wind farms is the wind energy source and the wind speed accordingly. In order to create wind speed maps, wind speed data obtained from a certain number of stations should be interpolated for the study area. In this study, wind speed data obtained from 32 meteorology stations in Balikesir province were used. With the help of these data, wind velocity maps were created with five different interpolation methods, namely IDW, Kriging, Natural Neighbor, Spline and Trend, within the borders of Balikesir province. Finally, the results obtained by these five methods were compared with the real wind speed values according to root mean square error and evaluations were made.

    Bioenergy is considered a sustainable substitute to fossil-fuel resources and the development of a prudent combination of renewable and innovative conversion technologies are essential for the valorization and effective conversion of biowaste to value-added commodities. Here, a negative pressure-induced carbonization process was proposed for the valorization of lignin-enriched biowaste precursor to bio-oil and environmental materials (biochar) at various temperatures. The high heating values (HHV) of the as-prepared biochars from the lignin enriched precursor under negative pressure (low-medium vacuum) were within 25.9-31.5 MJ/kg, which matched satisfactorily to the commercial charcoal. Whereas, the bio-oils produced from the lignin enriched precursor under vacuum conditions was a blend of complex aromatic and straight-chain hydro-carbons, including aldehyde, ketone, phenol, and furans, exhibiting ability as potential heating-oil with HHV within 21.2-28.2 MJ/kg. Moreover, the biochars produced under vacuum environments at higher temperature showed greater stability (22.5-35.9%) than those produced under N2 atmosphere.

    Abstract In this article, an attempt is made to better understand the contribution of hydropower in meeting electric energy needs of Turkey. Thus, a comparison between Turkey and other countries, which have some similarities with Turkey or which are more developed nations compared to Turkey, for evaluating from different aspects the contribution of hydropower in meeting electric energy needs is performed. The producers of electricity and hydroelectricity in the world, and the electric sectors of all the selected countries are firstly examined. Thereafter, Turkey's water resources and its potential, hydropower potential, and current status of hydropower in Turkey are investigated in detail. A detailed discussion regarding economic and energy indicators, hydroelectricity versus thermal electricity, the contributions of hydroelectricity to the total and renewable electricity generation, and the usage status of hydro potential of each selected nation is also made. Finally, it is found that hydropower is the second largest contributor in meeting Turkey's electric energy needs after thermal, mainly natural gas. It is also estimated that the contribution of hydropower will continue because a vast amount of its economically feasible hydro potential (about 64%) is undeveloped. Besides, it is determined that the contribution of hydropower in the total electricity generation in Turkey is greater than that of China and India, but it is lower than that of Norway, Brazil, and Canada.

    AbstractRemittances to the Philippines constitute a prominent part of its economy. However, remittances' effects on its environment have not been researched. In this regard, this research examines the direct and indirect impacts of remittance inflows on the Philippines' environmental sustainability for the 1977–2016 period by proposing a multivariate model, and by utilising the augmented ARDL and VECM methods to estimate this model. Our findings indicate that remittance inflows threaten environmental sustainability in the long‐run both directly and indirectly through boosting income and energy (oil) consumption. The results additionally imply that income and energy consumption also increase the ecological footprint of the Philippines in the long‐run. However, economic globalisation's long‐run impact is insignificant, yet its short‐run impact is significantly negative on the country's level of environmental degradation. Additionally, the findings reveal that the feedback hypothesis is valid between income and energy consumption in the long‐run, but the neutrality hypothesis is valid in the short‐run. This research's findings reveal that remittance inflows' impact on the environment is significant, and can occur through direct and various indirect channels, therefore, these inflows should be an integral part of sustainability policies in the Philippines, as ignoring them could cause further environmental decline.

    This study searches the impact of tourism growth on emission pollutants in Cyprus (north), which is a small island in the Mediterranean and has shown significant development in hotel and casino sectors in the last two decades. Results from time-series analyses reveal that an inverted U-shaped EKC hypothesis is confirmed for Cyprus with and without tourism development. Tourism also exerts positively significant and long-term effects on the levels of carbon emissions, revealing that growth in the tourism sector causes degradation in the environment.

    Abstract In this study, soil temperatures at different depths in Turkey's different regions were investigated theoretically. Soil temperature data are critical for different research interests such as ecology, biology, technique processes, forestry, agriculture, energy, food sector, ground heat exchanger applications, thermal energy storage applications, and so forth. This investigation gives information related to the prediction of soil temperature's dependence with depth and time especially for shallow geothermal applications. Soil temperature values depend on a great deal of varied parameters such as thermal conductivity, short term climatic conditions and moisture content. The main issue is that despite these temperatures are extremely important values, they can not be obtained in a short time. Due to this reason, we study a mathematical model related to the prediction of soil temperature. Within this context, 81 cities and their approximately 300.000 data, both, monthly air and soil temperatures between 1960 and 2015 were studied and finally seven regions in Turkey were investigated and final average soil temperature values were achieved. Measured data taken from the Izmir State Meteorological Station, and predicted soil temperatures at depths of 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm, 50 cm, and 100 cm were analyzed for each region in Turkey according to data obtained fifty years ago. Finally, at depths of 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm, 50 cm and 100 cm, the maximum average percentage errors in Turkey were 16%, 14.8%, 13.5%, 14.4%, 13.9% respectively. In conclusion, we evaluate the relationship between ambient air temperatures and soil temperatures in terms of depths from 5 to 3000 cm.

    Sustainable development is one of the issues that many developed and developing countries focus on in the world. The sustainability of human and natural resources is of great importance for securing the world and humanity's common future. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the socio-economic structure of Erzurum with analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and digitized strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis considering sustainable development goals (SDGs). The items included in the Agenda 21 report of the United Nations and 17 SDGs determined by the United Nations were taken into consideration in this endeavour. In line with expert opinions, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats created by the sustainable development goals for Erzurum province were analysed statistically with the AHP. Priority and weighted values of each sub-criterion were calculated. According to this analysis, "the richness of natural, cultural and historical resources for tourism potential" ranks first among the strengths of the province regarding sustainable development goals. Weaknesses include "insufficient investment and entrepreneurial culture". However, "priority region status for development" criterion stands out as the most important opportunity. Threats include "loss of labour force due to migration from agricultural areas" criterion. After the statistical analysis, the quantitative results of made for the best realization of sustainable development for the area were assessed to specify new goals and strategies. Suggestions were offered to define opportunities and strengths, threats and weaknesses with new-build strategies and to make the plans accordingly.

    In Turkey, the population living around forest areas is significantly affected by forestry activities. There are 21 thousand forest villages and 7 million forest villagers living in these forest villages within the 22.9 million ha forest area. In other words, one out of every three people living in rural areas is a forest villager. Daily life activities of forest villagers living together with forest areas can cause pressure on forests. GDoFV by various development projects to reduce the impacts of pressures on forest areas of forest villagers have been implemented. This improvement loans are two groups, including for economic and social purposes. GDoFV only makes cost-benefit analysis for social projects. Does not apply any other economic analysis. Water Heating with Solar Energy Systems (Solar Power Plant) project is a project implemented by GDoFV social purposes. The aim of the SPP projects is to reduce the firewood consumption of the forest villagers. This case study aimed to evaluate the economic analysis of SSP projects implemented to reduce the forest villager's consumption of firewood. In the forest villages of the Western Mediterranean Region, 100 forest villages were sampled from 152 forest villages and 629 forest villagers where SPP application was made.

    Abstract In the current study, an integrated renewable based energy system consisting of a solar flat plate collector is employed to generate electricity while providing cooling load and hydrogen. A parametric study is carried out in order to determine the main design parameters and their effects on the objective functions of the system. The outlet temperature of generator, inlet temperature to organic Rankine cycle turbine, solar irradiation intensity ( I ) , collector mass flow rate ( m ˙ c o l ) and flat plate collector area ( A P ) are considered as five decision variables. The results of parametric study show that the variation of collector mass flow rate between 3 kg/s and 8 kg/s has different effects on exergy efficiency and total cost rate of the system. In addition, the result shows that increment of inlet temperature to the ORC evaporator has a negative effect on cooling capacity of the system. It can lead to a decrease the cooling capacity from 44.29 kW to 22.6 kW, while the electricity generation and hydrogen production rate of the system increase. Therefore, a multi objective optimization is performed in order to introduce the optimal design conditions based on an evolutionary genetic algorithm. Optimization results show that exergy efficiency of the system can be enhanced from 1.72% to 3.2% and simultaneously the cost of the system can increase from 19.59 $/h to 22.28 $/h in optimal states.

    East Lisbon is being exposed to large-scale urban regeneration processes, where luxury residential projects and mixed-use spatial developments are already underway. Thus, it is a living laboratory for “smart”, “creative” and “green” projects, as well as related urban public space interventions. Braço de Prata is an urban space overlooked by developers, being surrounded by obsolete industrial buildings. Concerning the recent interest in international investments in brownfield regeneration and greenfield developments, it represents an attractive urban terrain as a post-industrial working-class neighbourhood, where “smart” and “green” suggest transforming space so that both new and old residents can live and work together and share public space regardless of analysis on their environmental recognitions. The aim of this paper is to present an empirical evaluation model that examines the possible impacts of environmental negligence through the reorganisation of the physical and social fabric. The analyses focus on dwellers’ moral understanding of their changing environment as site-specific domains to address the unique conditions that affect transiently defined presumptions about the collective needs. Taking an evaluative approach in the Braço de Prata case, this paper demonstrates the specific socio-ecological implications of urban inequality in post-industrial neighbourhoods that could be threatened by new decisions, both through urban planning approaches and instruments.

    With the increasing need for energy in the world, the demand for renewable energy sources is increasing day by day. This increase in energy need directs governments and private sector investors to renewable energy sources. Wind energy is one of the most important renewable energy resources on earth. In recent years, the share of wind energy in the amount of energy produced by renewable energy sources has been increasing. Wind energy emerges as a sustainable energy source due to its environmental friendliness and ability to renew itself. These features of wind energy have a great effect on the increase of its share in the energy sector. In order to get the highest efficiency from wind energy, the correct positioning of wind farms, that is, the concept of site selection is very important. One of the most important parameters in site selection of wind farms is the wind energy source and the wind speed accordingly. In order to create wind speed maps, wind speed data obtained from a certain number of stations should be interpolated for the study area. In this study, wind speed data obtained from 32 meteorology stations in Balikesir province were used. With the help of these data, wind velocity maps were created with five different interpolation methods, namely IDW, Kriging, Natural Neighbor, Spline and Trend, within the borders of Balikesir province. Finally, the results obtained by these five methods were compared with the real wind speed values according to root mean square error and evaluations were made.

    Bioenergy is considered a sustainable substitute to fossil-fuel resources and the development of a prudent combination of renewable and innovative conversion technologies are essential for the valorization and effective conversion of biowaste to value-added commodities. Here, a negative pressure-induced carbonization process was proposed for the valorization of lignin-enriched biowaste precursor to bio-oil and environmental materials (biochar) at various temperatures. The high heating values (HHV) of the as-prepared biochars from the lignin enriched precursor under negative pressure (low-medium vacuum) were within 25.9-31.5 MJ/kg, which matched satisfactorily to the commercial charcoal. Whereas, the bio-oils produced from the lignin enriched precursor under vacuum conditions was a blend of complex aromatic and straight-chain hydro-carbons, including aldehyde, ketone, phenol, and furans, exhibiting ability as potential heating-oil with HHV within 21.2-28.2 MJ/kg. Moreover, the biochars produced under vacuum environments at higher temperature showed greater stability (22.5-35.9%) than those produced under N2 atmosphere.

    Abstract In this article, an attempt is made to better understand the contribution of hydropower in meeting electric energy needs of Turkey. Thus, a comparison between Turkey and other countries, which have some similarities with Turkey or which are more developed nations compared to Turkey, for evaluating from different aspects the contribution of hydropower in meeting electric energy needs is performed. The producers of electricity and hydroelectricity in the world, and the electric sectors of all the selected countries are firstly examined. Thereafter, Turkey's water resources and its potential, hydropower potential, and current status of hydropower in Turkey are investigated in detail. A detailed discussion regarding economic and energy indicators, hydroelectricity versus thermal electricity, the contributions of hydroelectricity to the total and renewable electricity generation, and the usage status of hydro potential of each selected nation is also made. Finally, it is found that hydropower is the second largest contributor in meeting Turkey's electric energy needs after thermal, mainly natural gas. It is also estimated that the contribution of hydropower will continue because a vast amount of its economically feasible hydro potential (about 64%) is undeveloped. Besides, it is determined that the contribution of hydropower in the total electricity generation in Turkey is greater than that of China and India, but it is lower than that of Norway, Brazil, and Canada.

    AbstractRemittances to the Philippines constitute a prominent part of its economy. However, remittances' effects on its environment have not been researched. In this regard, this research examines the direct and indirect impacts of remittance inflows on the Philippines' environmental sustainability for the 1977–2016 period by proposing a multivariate model, and by utilising the augmented ARDL and VECM methods to estimate this model. Our findings indicate that remittance inflows threaten environmental sustainability in the long‐run both directly and indirectly through boosting income and energy (oil) consumption. The results additionally imply that income and energy consumption also increase the ecological footprint of the Philippines in the long‐run. However, economic globalisation's long‐run impact is insignificant, yet its short‐run impact is significantly negative on the country's level of environmental degradation. Additionally, the findings reveal that the feedback hypothesis is valid between income and energy consumption in the long‐run, but the neutrality hypothesis is valid in the short‐run. This research's findings reveal that remittance inflows' impact on the environment is significant, and can occur through direct and various indirect channels, therefore, these inflows should be an integral part of sustainability policies in the Philippines, as ignoring them could cause further environmental decline.

    This study searches the impact of tourism growth on emission pollutants in Cyprus (north), which is a small island in the Mediterranean and has shown significant development in hotel and casino sectors in the last two decades. Results from time-series analyses reveal that an inverted U-shaped EKC hypothesis is confirmed for Cyprus with and without tourism development. Tourism also exerts positively significant and long-term effects on the levels of carbon emissions, revealing that growth in the tourism sector causes degradation in the environment.

    Abstract In this study, soil temperatures at different depths in Turkey's different regions were investigated theoretically. Soil temperature data are critical for different research interests such as ecology, biology, technique processes, forestry, agriculture, energy, food sector, ground heat exchanger applications, thermal energy storage applications, and so forth. This investigation gives information related to the prediction of soil temperature's dependence with depth and time especially for shallow geothermal applications. Soil temperature values depend on a great deal of varied parameters such as thermal conductivity, short term climatic conditions and moisture content. The main issue is that despite these temperatures are extremely important values, they can not be obtained in a short time. Due to this reason, we study a mathematical model related to the prediction of soil temperature. Within this context, 81 cities and their approximately 300.000 data, both, monthly air and soil temperatures between 1960 and 2015 were studied and finally seven regions in Turkey were investigated and final average soil temperature values were achieved. Measured data taken from the Izmir State Meteorological Station, and predicted soil temperatures at depths of 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm, 50 cm, and 100 cm were analyzed for each region in Turkey according to data obtained fifty years ago. Finally, at depths of 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm, 50 cm and 100 cm, the maximum average percentage errors in Turkey were 16%, 14.8%, 13.5%, 14.4%, 13.9% respectively. In conclusion, we evaluate the relationship between ambient air temperatures and soil temperatures in terms of depths from 5 to 3000 cm.

    Sustainable development is one of the issues that many developed and developing countries focus on in the world. The sustainability of human and natural resources is of great importance for securing the world and humanity's common future. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the socio-economic structure of Erzurum with analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and digitized strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis considering sustainable development goals (SDGs). The items included in the Agenda 21 report of the United Nations and 17 SDGs determined by the United Nations were taken into consideration in this endeavour. In line with expert opinions, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats created by the sustainable development goals for Erzurum province were analysed statistically with the AHP. Priority and weighted values of each sub-criterion were calculated. According to this analysis, "the richness of natural, cultural and historical resources for tourism potential" ranks first among the strengths of the province regarding sustainable development goals. Weaknesses include "insufficient investment and entrepreneurial culture". However, "priority region status for development" criterion stands out as the most important opportunity. Threats include "loss of labour force due to migration from agricultural areas" criterion. After the statistical analysis, the quantitative results of made for the best realization of sustainable development for the area were assessed to specify new goals and strategies. Suggestions were offered to define opportunities and strengths, threats and weaknesses with new-build strategies and to make the plans accordingly.

    In Turkey, the population living around forest areas is significantly affected by forestry activities. There are 21 thousand forest villages and 7 million forest villagers living in these forest villages within the 22.9 million ha forest area. In other words, one out of every three people living in rural areas is a forest villager. Daily life activities of forest villagers living together with forest areas can cause pressure on forests. GDoFV by various development projects to reduce the impacts of pressures on forest areas of forest villagers have been implemented. This improvement loans are two groups, including for economic and social purposes. GDoFV only makes cost-benefit analysis for social projects. Does not apply any other economic analysis. Water Heating with Solar Energy Systems (Solar Power Plant) project is a project implemented by GDoFV social purposes. The aim of the SPP projects is to reduce the firewood consumption of the forest villagers. This case study aimed to evaluate the economic analysis of SSP projects implemented to reduce the forest villager's consumption of firewood. In the forest villages of the Western Mediterranean Region, 100 forest villages were sampled from 152 forest villages and 629 forest villagers where SPP application was made.

    Abstract In the current study, an integrated renewable based energy system consisting of a solar flat plate collector is employed to generate electricity while providing cooling load and hydrogen. A parametric study is carried out in order to determine the main design parameters and their effects on the objective functions of the system. The outlet temperature of generator, inlet temperature to organic Rankine cycle turbine, solar irradiation intensity ( I ) , collector mass flow rate ( m ˙ c o l ) and flat plate collector area ( A P ) are considered as five decision variables. The results of parametric study show that the variation of collector mass flow rate between 3 kg/s and 8 kg/s has different effects on exergy efficiency and total cost rate of the system. In addition, the result shows that increment of inlet temperature to the ORC evaporator has a negative effect on cooling capacity of the system. It can lead to a decrease the cooling capacity from 44.29 kW to 22.6 kW, while the electricity generation and hydrogen production rate of the system increase. Therefore, a multi objective optimization is performed in order to introduce the optimal design conditions based on an evolutionary genetic algorithm. Optimization results show that exergy efficiency of the system can be enhanced from 1.72% to 3.2% and simultaneously the cost of the system can increase from 19.59 $/h to 22.28 $/h in optimal states.
