The preliminary platform design, as well as early experimental design assessments, are critical elements in the overall design process. In this contribution, a brief review of current floating offshore wind turbine platform pre-design and scaled testing methodologies is provided, with a focus on their ability to accommodate the coupled dynamic behaviour of floating offshore wind systems. The exemplary design and testing methodology for a monolithic concrete spar platform as performed within the European KIC AFOSP project is presented. Results from the experimental tests compared to numerical simulations are presented and analysed and show very good agreement for relevant basic dynamic platform properties. Extreme and fatigue loads and cost analysis of the AFOSP system confirm the viability of the presented design process. In summary, the exemplary application of the reduced design and testing methodology for AFOSP confirms that it represents a viable procedure during pre-design of floating offshore wind turbine platforms.

Ding; Artur Polls; W. H. Dickhoff; Samuel J. Witte; Samuel J. Witte; A. Carbone; H. Dussan; Arnau Rios; The influence of short-range correlations (SRC) on the spectral distribution of neutrons is incorporated in the solution of the gap equation for the ${}^3P_2-{}^3F_2$ coupled channel in pure neutron matter at high density. This effect is studied for three different realistic interactions. The gap in this channel is strongly suppressed by these correlations but does not vanish. For a consistent treatment we also include for the first time the effect of long-range correlations (LRC) by incorporating polarization terms in addition to the bare interaction. This allows the neutrons to exchange density and spin fluctuations governed by the strength of Landau parameters with values that are consistent with the available literature. While these LRC have an antiscreening tendency, they only slightly increase the gap in the ${}^3P_2-{}^3F_2$ coupled channel for all three realistic interactions as long as SRC are included. All three interactions generate maximum gaps around 0.1 to 0.2 MeV at most with a small dependence on the hardness of the interaction. These results are relevant for the cooling scenarios of neutron stars, in particular the young neutron star in Cassiopeia A. 5 pages, 2 figures; submitted to Physical Review Letters plus a supplement

AbstractThe Paris Agreement calls for efforts to limit anthropogenic global warming to less than 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels. However, natural internal variability may exacerbate anthropogenic warming to produce temporary excursions above 1.5 °C. Such excursions would not necessarily exceed the Paris Agreement, but would provide a warning that the threshold is being approached. Here we develop a new capability to predict the probability that global temperature will exceed 1.5 °C above preindustrial levels in the coming 5 years. For the period 2017 to 2021 we predict a 38% and 10% chance, respectively, of monthly or yearly temperatures exceeding 1.5 °C, with virtually no chance of the 5‐year mean being above the threshold. Our forecasts will be updated annually to provide policy makers with advanced warning of the evolving probability and duration of future warming events.

Abstract. Robust projections and predictions of climate variability and change, particularly at regional scales, rely on the driving processes being represented with fidelity in model simulations. The role of enhanced horizontal resolution in improved process representation in all components of the climate system is of growing interest, particularly as some recent simulations suggest both the possibility of significant changes in large-scale aspects of circulation as well as improvements in small-scale processes and extremes. However, such high-resolution global simulations at climate timescales, with resolutions of at least 50 km in the atmosphere and 0.25° in the ocean, have been performed at relatively few research centres and generally without overall coordination, primarily due to their computational cost. Assessing the robustness of the response of simulated climate to model resolution requires a large multi-model ensemble using a coordinated set of experiments. The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) is the ideal framework within which to conduct such a study, due to the strong link to models being developed for the CMIP DECK experiments and other model intercomparison projects (MIPs). Increases in high-performance computing (HPC) resources, as well as the revised experimental design for CMIP6, now enable a detailed investigation of the impact of increased resolution up to synoptic weather scales on the simulated mean climate and its variability. The High Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP) presented in this paper applies, for the first time, a multi-model approach to the systematic investigation of the impact of horizontal resolution. A coordinated set of experiments has been designed to assess both a standard and an enhanced horizontal-resolution simulation in the atmosphere and ocean. The set of HighResMIP experiments is divided into three tiers consisting of atmosphere-only and coupled runs and spanning the period 1950–2050, with the possibility of extending to 2100, together with some additional targeted experiments. This paper describes the experimental set-up of HighResMIP, the analysis plan, the connection with the other CMIP6 endorsed MIPs, as well as the DECK and CMIP6 historical simulations. HighResMIP thereby focuses on one of the CMIP6 broad questions, “what are the origins and consequences of systematic model biases?”, but we also discuss how it addresses the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) grand challenges.

In order to cover the requirements linked to this effect and respond to the energetic and environmental goals, fossil fuels need to be replaced by renewable energy sources, and methods to increase the efficiency of the processes have to be developed. Regarding the energy supply of data centres, the complex integration of different energy systems into the technical infrastructure of the data centres is challenging. Within the RenewIT project [1], fourteen thermal and electrical power supply concepts for data centres have been investigated [2]. Regarding intermediate results of the project, the four concepts with combined heat and power production (CHP) provide the most promising solutions. One of the concepts with CHP, the system biogas-fed solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), is presented to show the methodology of modelling and simulating the CHP subsystem including non-series products with EBSILON [3]. The complex part load behaviour of the subsystem is identified and the information is transferred into TRNSYS [4] to increase data processing and minimize computing time.

Viticulture and winemaking are important socioeconomic sectors in many European regions. Climate plays a vital role in the terroir of a given wine region, as it strongly controls canopy microclimate, vine growth, vine physiology, yield, and berry composition, which together determine wine attributes and typicity. New challenges are, however, predicted to arise from climate change, as grapevine cultivation is deeply dependent on weather and climate conditions. Changes in viticultural suitability over the last decades, for viticulture in general or the use of specific varieties, have already been reported for many wine regions. Despite spatially heterogeneous impacts, climate change is anticipated to exacerbate these recent trends on suitability for wine production. These shifts may reshape the geographical distribution of wine regions, while wine typicity may also be threatened in most cases. Changing climates will thereby urge for the implementation of timely, suitable, and cost-effective adaptation strategies, which should also be thoroughly planned and tuned to local conditions for an effective risk reduction. Although the potential of the different adaptation options is not yet fully investigated, deserving further research activities, their adoption will be of utmost relevance to maintain the socioeconomic and environmental sustainability of the highly valued viticulture and winemaking sector in Europe.

Attention has been focused on the time scale and mechanism of the decay of the fundamental H(2)O bend vibration and the related issue of the decay of water librational (hindered rotational) excitations, including the important role of that for the excited molecule itself. The time scales found are 270 fs for the decay of the average energy of an H(2)O molecule excited to the nu = 1 state of the bending oscillator and less than 100 fs for excess rotational (librational) kinetic energy, both consistent with recent ultrafast infrared experimental results. The energy flow to the excited molecule rotation and through the first several solvent shells around the excited water molecule is discussed in some detail.

AbstractThe seasonal timing of recurring biological processes is essential for organisms living in temperate regions. While ample knowledge of these processes exists for terrestrial environments, seasonal timing in the marine environment is relatively understudied. Here, we characterized the annual rhythm of habitat use in six fish species belonging to the Sparidae family, highlighting the main environmental variables that correlate to such rhythms. The study was conducted at a coastal artificial reef through a cabled observatory system, which allowed gathering underwater time-lapse images every 30 minutes consecutively over 3 years. Rhythms of fish counts had a significant annual periodicity in four out of the six studied species. Species-specific temporal patterns were found, demonstrating a clear annual temporal niche partitioning within the studied family. Temperature was the most important environmental variable correlated with fish counts in the proximity of the artificial reef, while daily photoperiod and salinity were not important. In a scenario of human-induced rapid environmental change, tracking phenological shifts may provide key indications about the effects of climate change at both species and ecosystem level. Our study reinforces the efficacy of underwater cabled video-observatories as a reliable tool for long-term monitoring of phenological events.

In this article, four different numerical models for the investigation of phase change processes within latent heat storage are described and compared concerning accuracy, convergence behavior and computational efficiency. The models are based on different types of discretization, make use of different ways to model phase change and are implemented with C, MATLAB or ANSYS CFX. After a brief introduction into each investigated numerical model, the experimental reference setup is described. It consists of a flat plate latent heat storage with the eutectic mixture NaNO3 (46 wt%)–KNO3 (54 wt%) with a measured melting temperature of 219.5 °C as storage material. Based on the corresponding simulation model developed in this paper, the comparison of the numerical models is achieved. This methodology allows the investigation of the numerical performance of different software tools in the context of high temperature latent heat storage that was not achieved thus far. All four numerical models show good agreement to experimental results but differ significantly in speed and convergence behavior. This work was partially funded by the nextPCM project supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Moreover, the work was partially funded by the Spanish government (ENE2011-22722 and ULLE10-4E-1305). The authors Alvaro de Gracia and Luisa F. Waste of energy due to over-provisioning and overdimensioning of network infrastructures has recently stimulated the interest on energy consumption reduction by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). By means of resource consolidation, network virtualization based architectures will enable energy saving. In this letter, we extend the well-known virtual network embedding problem (VNE) to energy awareness and propose a mixed integer program (MIP) which provides optimal energy efficient embeddings. Simulation results show the energy gains of the proposed MIP over the existing cost-based VNE approach. Peer Reviewed

Cabeza would like to thank the Catalan Government for the quality accreditation given to their research group (2014-SGR-123). The research leading to parts of these results has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement PIRSES-GA-2013-610692 (INNOSTORAGE). Alvaro de Gracia would like to thank the Education Ministry of Chile for Grant PMI ANT1201.
