description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2023Publisher:IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet Authors: Moberg, Emma; Molin, Elvira; Källmark, Lovisa; Martin, Michael; This report is written within the Swedish Wool Initiative project, funded by Vinnova. The project aims at increasing the competitiveness for Swedish wool and contributing to a more sustainable and circular textile industry through developing circular products based on discarded Swedish wool. Apart from project leader Axfoundation, project partners include actors from the textile industry, supply chain as well as from research and innovation. The report describes the results of a working package focusing on the sustainability of Swedish wool. The study aimed at looking into methodological choices applied in sustainability assessments of sheep and wool production, as well as to investigate results of sustainability impact assessments of the production. Based on this, the study aimed to highlight potentially missing aspects in previous assessments as well as to compare the impacts of Swedish production in relation to production in other countries. For studies assessing wool at farm-gate, a functional unit of per kg of greasy wool was found to be a common choice. Using such functional unit has been criticized for not relating to the function of the fiber which for comparison should be expanded to include its quality and durability. For the reviewed assessments of woolen garments, these were commonly assessed from a cradle to grave perspective, with a functional unit including a definition of a specific weight as well as lifetime, which is preferable as this makes it possible to compare the function of different garments. Concerning handling multi-functionality of production systems, most studies were found to apply one or several allocation strategies to distribute the environmental burdens between the by-products. The choice of allocation factors was found to vary substantially between the reviewed studies which had large implications on overall results. Studies covering Swedish production were found to apply a low or no allocation to wool, due to the low economic revenues of wool. In comparison, studies covering the production in other countries were found to use higher economic allocation factors. This was explained by a higher level of specialization of wool production in combination with larger extent of wool takencare of, which increase its economic revenues and thus allocation factors. On comparing the environmental impact categories and indicators recommendedby frameworks and the ones currently applied in the literature, large overlapswere found. Overall, all environmental impact categories recommended by the reviewed frameworks were found to be used in the studied literature, although no single study was found to cover all aspects in either of the frameworks. The indicators recommended by the studied frameworks were not always applied by the reviewed studies. For example, the impact category of land use and land system change is commonly investigated through assessing overall land use, but is recommended to include indicators on soil health by e.g. the Product Environmental Footprint guidelines. In the workshop with actors from different parts of the supply-chain of Swedish wool, environmental perspectives given top priority included climate impact, chemical use in production, biodiversity and resource efficiency. Climate impact and resource use were found to be among the most applied indicators in the literature. Chemical use in production and biodiversity were on the other hand rarely assessed. Thus, future studies assessing the environmental sustainability of Swedish wool could ideally include these aspects. Few studies covering social and economic dimensions were found. The participants in the workshop highlighted animal welfare and profitability among top priorities of social and economic perspectives to be included in a sustainability assessment of Swedish wool. No conclusions could be drawn on the climate impact of Swedish sheep or wool production systems compared to other countries, as the studies vary in analyzed production systems, as well as methodological choices, e.g. regarding the functional units and impact assessment method chosen. However, considering the low allocation factors assigned to Swedish wool in the identified studies, this result in substantially lower climate impact for wool up to farm-gate, compared to the results reported by other studies. Swedish sheep farming has been highlighted to impact positively on several of the Swedish Environmental Objectives, e.g. through grazing animals sustaining biodiversity conservation of threatened species in Swedish semi-natural pastures. Another often lifted benefit for Swedish agriculture is the potential carbon sequestration due to grass ley production. However, several studies were found tohighlight the same attributes to sheep and wool production in other countries worldwide, as the farming systems to a large extent are extensive pastoral-based systems. Regarding other potential benefits often highlighted for Swedish production of sheep and wool, these include animal welfare regulations. On comparing Swedish regulations to legislation and literature for other production countries, potential added values from Swedish production compared to other countries were found, e.g. with regards to use of veterinary antibiotics and medical interventions.

Although renewable and sustainably sourced biopower can reduce the carbon footprint of the electricity sector, there is a scarcity of analyses that simultaneously consider the financial feasibility and sustainability criteria of procured biomass. We developed a spatially -explicit optimization model to minimize the cost of meeting projected biopower demand while ensuring carbon neutrality and biomass sustainability constraints. The optimization model was applied to projected biopower demand scenarios in the eastern US, considering various public policy decarbonization interventions. Modeling woody biomass procured from local forests as the source of biopower was chosen due to its dominant role as a renewable energy source, regional availability, and lower risk of violating carbon neutrality objectives. Initially, we projected the net growth of woody biomass in trees and their carbon pools by 2035, as a function of biopower generation, utilizing data from 2009-2017. Subsequently, forecasted woody biomass and projected biopower demand through 2035 were employed to determine optimal levels of biopower generation and estimate the corresponding resource impacts within procurement forests. The results suggest the potential for substantial increases in sustainable biopower generation in the eastern US. However, the feasibility of this expansion depends on the continued economic viability of biopower generation in the future. It is worth noting that the largest increases, surpassing threefold, in biopower generation over the 2020-2030 decade could potentially compromise the carbon neutrality of locally procured woody biomass.

Swedish Energy Agency has been allocated SEK 100 million from the government to distribute as investment grant to promote efficient and expanded production, distribution and use of renewable gases such as biogas. The Agency has also been given the task to develop a multidisciplinary strategy for biogas and propose measures which can contribute to increased use of biogas in the short and long term. This strategy will also serve as a basis for the allocation of various forms of support in the biogas sector. The purpose of this study is to compile information which can be used as input for the establishment of the multidisciplinary strategy for biogas. Another purpose is to provide information to support the Swedish Energy Agency in the assessment of which areas an investment grant will have the greatest impact for the future development of biogas. This grant refers to the latest call of Swedish Energy Agency in the sector. This report includes a summary of what areas grants have been given for research of biogas in recent years, mainly financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, but also an insight into efforts made by other national operators. A number of people from professional biogas organizations have been interviewed to share their views on the future biogas market. Which efforts should be made and the main obstacles to be overcome are other questions discussed. The report contains conclusions from the experience of previous support from the Swedish Energy Agency as well as identification of areas in which there is great need for future efforts in order to expand the production, distribution and use of biogas. Some areas which have been identified in this thesis for need of future efforts in the biogas sector is for example the development of alternative substrates for anaerobic digestion, because the amount of available substrate is at present not sufficient. This is currently a limitation for the biogas production. There is also a need to further develop the pre-treatment of the substrate before digestion, in order to increase the gas production and improve substrate utilization to a greater extent. More focus are also needed on how the end product from the biogas process, the digestion residues, can become a more attractive product to the recycling of plant nutrients by use as a bio fertilizer on farmland. This is of great importance because larger volume of digestion will result in greater volume of digestion residues to be managed. Other areas in need of future investments are the development of existing facilities to increase and optimize the production. In order to optimize the production processes, more resources should be devoted to capacity building and dissemination of the available knowledge. Linking universities and colleges together with operating biogas plants could be the most effective way to reach out with relevant information and knowledge. From a socioeconomic perspective more resources should be spent on increasing the volume of manure digestion then it is today, which also will result in reduced methane leaks.

Swedish Energy Agency has been allocated SEK 100 million from the government to distribute as investment grant to promote efficient and expanded production, distribution and use of renewable gases such as biogas. Methodology: The study is based on a qualitative research method with abductive approach. The qualitative methods that have been conducted consist of semi -structured interviews with ten respondents from nine companies, and observations of the respective companies' digital platforms. Furthermore, the collected material has been thematically analyzed. Analysis & Conclusion: The study's findings reveal that all respondents recognize the importance of sustainability communication. All of the companies questioned chose to work with sustainability in different ways, although the majority of respondents associated sustainability primarily with the environmental perspective. Several respondents, on the other hand, provided information on the social and economic perspectives of sustainability. Furthermore, the companies questioned choose to communicate their sustainability work outward as opposed to communicating internally, which was previously the norm. However, it is perceived as a challenge for companies to use digital channels to communicate their sustainability work and establish a clear view of responsibility for consumers. For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.euapps Other research productkeyboard_double_arrow_right Other ORP type 2022Publisher:Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för informatik (IK) Funded by:NSF | Rigorous Research in Engi...NSF| Rigorous Research in Engineering Education: Creating a Community of PracticeAuthors: Sars, Viktoria; Kroon, Hannah; In light of climate change and global warming, the application of sustainability principles in everyday life is becoming a necessity in a variety of circumstances. In an increasingly digital world with pandemic ramifications, optimal functionality and accessibility inside digital platforms are a top priority. There is a tremendous demand for essential digital services that generate better standards and adapt to societal conditions, improve conditions for society, and facilitate day-to-day workflow. The emphasis on factors such as usability and accessibility raises the question of whether there is a comparable emphasis on sustainability in development. Green IT is a concept that is gaining popularity, namely Green User Experience or the already established term SID, Sustainable Interaction Design. This study investigates the usability of municipal websites based on a score derived from comparing the findings of assessments of the websites' sustainability in a broader context. Using a qualitative approach, the data is evaluated and compared with the approaches and justifications of various municipalities. This information was gathered through interviews and analysed using Socio-technical Systems Theory. The outcome is intended to justify a major organisational shift and encourage a greater emphasis on working sustainably in website design and development. In relation to the digital world and the public sector, the study revealed a tendency towards the need for guidelines in order to set a clearer norm from a sustainability standpoint. A more sustainable user experience, where sustainability for municipal websites is viewed as an impact of usability and enhancements that are helpful to the earth as a whole.

Increased environmental concerns as well as steadily increasing electricity and oil prices make the detached houses sector a potential market for the district heating companies. District heating in low heat density areas is economically challenging for mainly two reasons: Firstly, construction of the district heating system implicate large investment costs. Secondly, the distributions costs, particularly for heat losses, will be larger in systems with low heat density. In order to maximize the line heat density and to reduce the investment cost per house a high rate of connections in the area is essential. Hence the economic prerequisites bring about a market situation in which the district heating companies are required to connect as many customers as possible within a specific area at the same time. The aim of this study is to find out what kind of strategies the district heating companies use for selling district heating to detached house owners. Our hope is that this study will help transferring knowledge and experiences between the district heating companies; that is identify efforts for new, successful strategies and to make some specific contributions to these new strategies. Methods used in this study were a survey that was sent to all of the members of The Swedish District Heating Association and telephone interviews with some of the companies that answered the survey. The rate of answers in the survey was 30 % and the number of interviews was 17. Results from the statistical analysis show that the size of a company is an important factor for the expansions rate. As measurements of company size either the company’s amount of customers, or the company’s total amount of heat sold per year, have been used. Not very surprising, large companies seem to connect a higher number of new customers in detached houses per year compared to smaller companies. Also, a correlation between the supply of cheap fuel in the production mix and the expansion rate has been found, although the correlation is rather weak. Many companies use sales processes that are similar to each other. The first step in the sales process is to investigate the customer interest for district heating within the area. This is accomplished either by sending out interest inquiries to the potential customers and arranging information meetings, or by assigning an already interested customer to investigate the interest for district heating in the neighbourhood. A combination of the different activities also exists. The next step is contract signing. The customer is usually tied up by the contract to connect to district heating when the system is expanded to the area, whereas the company does not guarantee any connection unless a sufficient rate of connections can be achieved in the area. Several companies also perform sales to latecomers during or after the erection of the system. The figure above discloses results from the study regarding which information companies have or collect about their potential customers. The information mainly concerns physical factors that can be used for estimating heat load in an area, factors that can be used to determine the heat sources presently used by the customer and the age of boilers and equipment in the houses. Some companies have been rather active when it comes to physical factors and for instance used the public record of energy wells in order to get an indication of the existence of heat pumps in the area. This is one example of an interesting move that other companies surely can adopt. Social factors like income, profession, education and age of household members are hardly examined at all. This kind of information is needed by the district heating companies for them to be able to offer customer specific solutions or to sharpen the argumentation when marketing district heating. From this viewpoint the customer is still seen merely a heat load in the district heating system. When the company presents their offer to connect houses to the grid the customers are not always in the situation where they can change heat source right away. The district heating companies have developed a variety of strategies to deal with this problem. Some companies offer compensation to the customer for the old heat source or assist in mediating the customer’s old boiler to a buyer. If the customers’ heating device breaks down before the house has been connected to the district heating system, some companies arrange a temporary solution for the customer. A small number of companies offer a resting connection if the customer for some reason doesn’t want to connect to the district heating system straight away. Only very few companies offer services that stand out from the core business ”to sell heat to detached houses”.

As a result of this the industry’s credibility has diminished which has resulted in a higher demand for sustainability and transparency from the banks as they are strongly linked to the financial stability. The study aims to create a deeper understanding of Sweden's four largest banks sustainability reports, focusing on how the banks work with sustainability in relation to what society demands. The focal point will be on the banks' sustainability reports between the years of 2014-2018. The study has adopted a qualitative research strategy to decode the data a content analysis has been used. It has also been based on an abductive research design where theory and the collected data has formed the basis for the conclusion. Based on the coding scheme that was developed together with the bank’s own classification of their own sustainability development and Schwartz and Carroll’s (2003) three-domain model of CSR, data was collected from the bank’s sustainability report. This was then analysed together with the help of legitimacy theory, institutional theory and the critic directed towards the sustainability report. The study results indicate that the bank’s presentation of their sustainability report shaped of external expectations and pressure, under a time of diminished trust for the bank and finance sector. Furthermore, the sustainability report’s effect on the bank’s legitimacy is estimated to be low and the conflicts brought forward by the bank’s is due to the bank’s trying to satisfy many different needs.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Bachelor thesis , Other literature type 2005 SwedenPublisher:Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper Authors: Leksell, Niklas;Käppala wastewater treatment plant situated on the island of Lidingö northeast of Stockholm is running a project during 2004 and 2005 with the purpose to map out the capacity of anaerobic digestion in the digesters that treat primary and excess sludge. The purpose of this thesis work, which is part of that project, was to characterize the present anaerobic digestion process and to investigate its capacity to treat other organic wastes such as restaurant waste and waste from water works. To decide the potential of both methane and biogas production from different substrates batch laboratory tests were carried out. To imitate the anaerobic digestion process at Käppala continuous tests with small scale reactors were carried out. These reactors were later fed with restaurant waste. The batch laboratory tests showed that primary sludge had a potential biogas and methane production of 0,62 and 0,35 Ndm3/g VS respectively after 40 days of digestion. After 15 to 20 days of digestion (average retention time in the digester at Käppala wastewater treayment plant that treats primary sludge) the biogas production was between 0,55 and 0,60 Ndm3/g VS, which is within the range of the production at the digester that treats the primary sludge. This leads to the conclusion that the digestion of primary sludge is well functioning at the plant. Batch laboratory tests showed that excess sludge had a potential biogas and methane production of 0,31 and 0,16 Ndm3/g VS respectively after 40 days of digestion. Batch laboratory tests with restaurant waste showed a potential biogas and methane production of 0,81 and 0,38 Ndm3/g VS respectively after 47 days of digestion. This means that the total production of methane gas can increase with 7-8 per cent with an annual load of 3500 tonnes of restaurant waste (estimated amount of available restaurant waste). Tests to imitate transport of restaurant waste with influent wastewater showed that 35-60 per cent of the increase of gas production would be “washed out” if the waste was tranported this way to the plant. Batch laboratory tests with waste from water works showed that no gas was produced from this substrate. The continuous tests with small scale reactors which were fed with restaurant waste resulted in an increase of biogas production with 12 per cent (corresponding to an annual load of 3500 tonnes of restaurant waste) compared to the present process.

This article provides an overview of political ideas and regulations determining the establishment of wind power in Sweden. In 2022, the new right wing/liberal government signaled a reduced commitment to international environmental and climate policy and an increased significance of a national focus. Wind power was partly played down, and nuclear power was emphasized as the key solution to the ongoing electrification of the energy system. Yet, there is a strong demand from Swedish industry for a faster electrification, only obtainable by wind power. There is also huge interest from international capital to establish wind power in Sweden. However, land-based wind power is being severely hampered by a lack of acceptance in the local community and by use of the municipal veto in the permit process. For offshore wind power, there are applications corresponding to the entire current electricity production in Sweden. Many of these projects are located in areas where they come into conflict with other interests; defense, tourism, fisheries, etc. Expectations are high on a greater clarity on the options for offshore wind power. In 2024, the Swedish government will submit proposals for the new energy policy. As a basis, there is a wide range of investigations, collaboration processes, and regional dialogues. 2024 may be a crucial year for the continued expansion of wind power in Sweden.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2023Publisher:IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet Authors: Moberg, Emma; Molin, Elvira; Källmark, Lovisa; Martin, Michael; This report is written within the Swedish Wool Initiative project, funded by Vinnova.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2004 SwedenPublisher:Svensk Fjärrvärme Authors: Persson, Tommy; Sernhed, Kerstin;District heating is well expanded in the residential areas in Sweden, although not in detached house areas.
