____________________________________________________________________________________________________ As the importance of bacterial compartment in the functioning of the natural aquatic eco¬systems has been demonstrated, methods were developed in order to estimate bacterial biomass and activity. The goal of the present paper is to make a rapid review of the diffe¬rent methods presented in the literature. Advantages and problems of the application of each method in the field of aquatic bacterial ecology are discussed. The various possibilities of bacterial abundance and biomass determination are first presented, thus the diffe¬rent ways to investigate metabolic activity of individual bacteria are described and, final/y, the measurements of the global bacterial activity are discussed. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published

These changes significantly influence migration patterns of populations within and outside of West Africa. In this region, where natural resources are the basis of livelihoods and food security, the relationship between environmental change and socio-economic vulnerability is of particular concern. Environmental degradation impacts the vulnerability of populations and their resiliency in complex ways. The presence of environmental and climatic stresses varies geographically. While desertification and drought are of primary importance for some areas, flooding, coastal erosion, and rising sea levels are the main dangers for others. Within the same population affected by the same climate threats, vulnerability and the likelihood of migration are influenced by socio-economic status, dependence on natural resources, and demographic characteristics. Given the differentiated vulnerabilities and resilience capacities, policies need to be adapted and implemented according to the particular needs of the populations. Policy-makers must also take account of vulnerability as perceived by the people concerned. Therefore, environmental mobility cannot be considered as strictly rational behavior based on real vulnerability. Local populations need to be informed of current and future environmental changes in order to accompany their mobility decisions. Migration can also be an important tool for resilience to socio-environmental change. Creating hosting infrastructure and putting in place mechanisms to protect migrants and displaced persons is a necessary step to mitigate future risks. Regional authorities need to work together to strengthen the resilience of communities of origin to climate shocks, but they must also facilitate migration as an adaptation strategy.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2015 BelgiumAuthors: Aguilar Sanchez, Juan Antonio; Tiniakov, Petr; The Telescope Array experiment studies ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid detector. Fluorescence telescopes measure the longitudinal development of the extensive air shower generated when a primary cosmic ray particle interacts with the atmosphere. Meanwhile, scintillator detectors measure the lateral distribution of secondary shower particles that hit the ground. The Middle Drum (MD) fluorescence telescope station consists of 14 telescopes from the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) experiment, providing a direct link back to the HiRes measurements. Using the scintillator detector data in conjunction with the telescope data improves the geometrical reconstruction of the showers significantly, and hence, provides a more accurate reconstruction of the energy of the primary particle. The Middle Drum hybrid spectrum is presented and compared to that measured by the Middle Drum station in monocular mode. Further, the hybrid data establishes a link between the Middle Drum data and the surface array. A comparison between the Middle Drum hybrid energy spectrum and scintillator Surface Detector (SD) spectrum is also shown.

_____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Recent studies have shown that when wastewaters are discharged into a river, heterotrophic bacterial biomass in the effluent exerts considerable influence on the biodegradation kinetics of organic matter and provokes the oxygen deficits often observed downstream from outfalls. Quantification of bacterial biomass in wastewaters is required for a good understanding of ...

A comparison between the Middle Drum hybrid energy spectrum and scintillator Surface Detector (SD) spectrum is also shown. ; 0 ; SCOPUS: ar.j ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published
