Food deserts (FD) have attracted attention after the post-COVID-19 pandemic, primarily due to adverse health and other implications of living in areas designated as food deserts. Most studies have focused on various aspects of the impact of food deserts, including the nutritional and health risks of living in FDs. Spatial integration and analysis of the GIS data in food provide a powerful way to expose the issues of creating deserts and how they change over space and time. This study aims to investigate the socioeconomic factors influencing food deserts using geospatial analyses. Guilford, Bladen, and Rutherford Counties in North Carolina were selected as case studies due to their higher percentage of the population with limited healthy food access. This study used open-source data, such as the USDA’s Crop Land Layer (CDL) land cover maps, census data, and the Food Access Research Atlas. This research provides a geostatistical analysis of FDs based on income/expenditure, population, vehicle, and food aid. The study results generally showed that geospatial technologies are vital for investigating FDs. The results will assist policy makers and other responsible agencies in formulating appropriate intervention policies tailored to meet the demands of these counties.

Fruits are used in the diet of the population, both fresh and for the production of various processed products, and most importantly, the most popular is dried fruits. In this regard, the topic is relevant both for the agricultural economy and for the country's economy as a whole. Intensive gardening is a combination of technologies, means, resources based on modern, intensive, innovative bases. The purpose of researching the material of the article is to analyze the corresponding situation of intensive gardens in the Republic of Uzbekistan, analyze the development and formulate proposals for increasing the economic attractiveness of cultivating intensive gardens, both for local consumption within the country and for export to foreign countries. The object of the study was the gardening of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in particular, they were accepted for analysis in 2016-2020. The objectives of the study of the material were the study of the economic side of the cultivation of intensive gardens, diagnostics of the state of intensive gardens, based on the analysis, the creation of proposals admissible for adoption on the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Climate change can affect soil functions both directly and indirectly. Direct effects include temperature, precipitation, and moisture regime changes. Indirect effects include those that are induced by adaptations such as irrigation, crop rotation changes, and tillage practices. Although extensive knowledge is available on the direct effects, an understanding of the indirect effects of agricultural adaptation options is less complete. A review of 20 agricultural adaptation case‐studies across Europe was conducted to assess implications to soil threats and soil functions and the link to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The major findings are as follows: (a) adaptation options reflect local conditions; (b) reduced soil erosion threats and increased soil organic carbon are expected, although compaction may increase in some areas; (c) most adaptation options are anticipated to improve the soil functions of food and biomass production, soil organic carbon storage, and storing, filtering, transforming, and recycling capacities, whereas possible implications for soil biodiversity are largely unknown; and (d) the linkage between soil functions and the SDGs implies improvements to SDG 2 (achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture) and SDG 13 (taking action on climate change), whereas the relationship to SDG 15 (using terrestrial ecosystems sustainably) is largely unknown. The conclusion is drawn that agricultural adaptation options, even when focused on increasing yields, have the potential to outweigh the negative direct effects of climate change on soil degradation in many European regions.

A fixed effects regression and two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) is used to analyze secondary data from the World Bank, covering 163 countries over the period from 2000 to 2016. The study tests the relationship between renewable energy, urbanization, and CO2 emissions. The empirical results show that urbanization has an inverted U-shaped relationship with CO2 emissions, while renewable energy consumption mitigates CO2 emissions. If causal, a 1% increase in renewable energy use leads to a 1.2% decrease in CO2 emissions. The results also show that the GDP per capita has an inverted U-shaped relationship with CO2 emissions, confirming the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). We also found that innovation, proxied by residents’ patents, has a non-linear effect on CO2 emissions. As a policy implication, developing countries should increase the share of renewable energy in their total energy use, and promote innovative activities by increasing government spending on R&D.

The results of Pedroni and Kao tests show the cointegration among observed variables. The Granger non-causality test demonstrates that there is bi-directional causality in financial development–tourism and energy–emission nexuses. The one-way causality is identified in cases of tourism–energy, tourism–CO2, finance–energy, and finance–CO2.

The research methodology is based on the use of dialectical logic and a system-structural approach. General scientific methods and techniques were used in the work: scientific abstraction, grouping, qualitative expert assessments, quantitative assessments, comparative analysis and synthesis. Based on the study of trends in the development of the world economy and technologies of the future, the author proves that when choosing priority areas in economic sectors, the emphasis should be placed on those areas and technologies that will give the maximum effect for resource conservation, the growth of competitiveness of domestic products, sustainable employment, reduction of transaction costs, growth of human capital. During the discussion of the results of the study, the method of scenarios was used, which allows combining factors and conditions of development within a limited number of alternative models of economic growth, and using modern model analytical tools to assess the most likely consequences of their implementation. In conclusion, it is concluded that the considered scenarios represent extreme hypothetical directions of the long-term development of the national economy and determine the framework within which optimal solutions should be sought.

They are climate change and population growth. Climate change and its increasing scale are no longer in doubt. It tends to increase the frequency and intensity of droughts. Changes in average water availability in most Central Asian river basins are estimated to be drastically big for the next 30 years. And, groundwater recharge may also be affected with a reduction in the availability of groundwater for drinking water in some regions. Water use has been increasing worldwide by about 1% per year since the 1980s, driven by a combination of population growth, socio-economic development and changing consumption patterns. Global water demand is expected to continue increasing at a similar rate until 2050, accounting for an increase of 20 to 30% above the current level of water use, mainly due to rising demand in the industrial and domestic sectors. These obliging to redefine the strategy for the use of water resources to ensure sustainable drinking water supply forcing the use of all available water resources even those that were not previously taken into account, for example, off stream storage reservoirs. Research, development and innovation play an important role in supporting informed decision-making. Therefore, further scientific and engineering studies are also needed for the development of financially affordable, safe and efficient infrastructure services in the areas of drinking water supply, sanitation and hygiene and its components. The article considers a particular reservoir the bottom of which is composed of saline soils operating in regular filling and emptying and subject to significant wind effects. The research conducted allowed to find a place of water intake location which provides a minimum salt content in the water abstracted.

Food deserts (FD) have attracted attention after the post-COVID-19 pandemic, primarily due to adverse health and other implications of living in areas designated as food deserts. Most studies have focused on various aspects of the impact of food deserts, including the nutritional and health risks of living in FDs. Spatial integration and analysis of the GIS data in food provide a powerful way to expose the issues of creating deserts and how they change over space and time. This study aims to investigate the socioeconomic factors influencing food deserts using geospatial analyses. Guilford, Bladen, and Rutherford Counties in North Carolina were selected as case studies due to their higher percentage of the population with limited healthy food access. This study used open-source data, such as the USDA’s Crop Land Layer (CDL) land cover maps, census data, and the Food Access Research Atlas. This research provides a geostatistical analysis of FDs based on income/expenditure, population, vehicle, and food aid. The study results generally showed that geospatial technologies are vital for investigating FDs. The results will assist policy makers and other responsible agencies in formulating appropriate intervention policies tailored to meet the demands of these counties.

Climate change can affect soil functions both directly and indirectly. Direct effects include temperature, precipitation, and moisture regime changes. Indirect effects include those that are induced by adaptations such as irrigation, crop rotation changes, and tillage practices. Although extensive knowledge is available on the direct effects, an understanding of the indirect effects of agricultural adaptation options is less complete. A review of 20 agricultural adaptation case‐studies across Europe was conducted to assess implications to soil threats and soil functions and the link to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The major findings are as follows: (a) adaptation options reflect local conditions; (b) reduced soil erosion threats and increased soil organic carbon are expected, although compaction may increase in some areas; (c) most adaptation options are anticipated to improve the soil functions of food and biomass production, soil organic carbon storage, and storing, filtering, transforming, and recycling capacities, whereas possible implications for soil biodiversity are largely unknown; and (d) the linkage between soil functions and the SDGs implies improvements to SDG 2 (achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture) and SDG 13 (taking action on climate change), whereas the relationship to SDG 15 (using terrestrial ecosystems sustainably) is largely unknown. The conclusion is drawn that agricultural adaptation options, even when focused on increasing yields, have the potential to outweigh the negative direct effects of climate change on soil degradation in many European regions.

A fixed effects regression and two-step system generalized method of moments (GMM) is used to analyze secondary data from the World Bank, covering 163 countries over the period from 2000 to 2016. The study tests the relationship between renewable energy, urbanization, and CO2 emissions. The empirical results show that urbanization has an inverted U-shaped relationship with CO2 emissions, while renewable energy consumption mitigates CO2 emissions. If causal, a 1% increase in renewable energy use leads to a 1.2% decrease in CO2 emissions. The results also show that the GDP per capita has an inverted U-shaped relationship with CO2 emissions, confirming the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). We also found that innovation, proxied by residents’ patents, has a non-linear effect on CO2 emissions. As a policy implication, developing countries should increase the share of renewable energy in their total energy use, and promote innovative activities by increasing government spending on R&D.

The results of Pedroni and Kao tests show the cointegration among observed variables. The Granger non-causality test demonstrates that there is bi-directional causality in financial development–tourism and energy–emission nexuses. The one-way causality is identified in cases of tourism–energy, tourism–CO2, finance–energy, and finance–CO2.

The research methodology is based on the use of dialectical logic and a system-structural approach. General scientific methods and techniques were used in the work: scientific abstraction, grouping, qualitative expert assessments, quantitative assessments, comparative analysis and synthesis. Based on the study of trends in the development of the world economy and technologies of the future, the author proves that when choosing priority areas in economic sectors, the emphasis should be placed on those areas and technologies that will give the maximum effect for resource conservation, the growth of competitiveness of domestic products, sustainable employment, reduction of transaction costs, growth of human capital. During the discussion of the results of the study, the method of scenarios was used, which allows combining factors and conditions of development within a limited number of alternative models of economic growth, and using modern model analytical tools to assess the most likely consequences of their implementation. In conclusion, it is concluded that the considered scenarios represent extreme hypothetical directions of the long-term development of the national economy and determine the framework within which optimal solutions should be sought.

They are climate change and population growth. Climate change and its increasing scale are no longer in doubt. It tends to increase the frequency and intensity of droughts. Changes in average water availability in most Central Asian river basins are estimated to be drastically big for the next 30 years. And, groundwater recharge may also be affected with a reduction in the availability of groundwater for drinking water in some regions. Water use has been increasing worldwide by about 1% per year since the 1980s, driven by a combination of population growth, socio-economic development and changing consumption patterns. Global water demand is expected to continue increasing at a similar rate until 2050, accounting for an increase of 20 to 30% above the current level of water use, mainly due to rising demand in the industrial and domestic sectors. These obliging to redefine the strategy for the use of water resources to ensure sustainable drinking water supply forcing the use of all available water resources even those that were not previously taken into account, for example, off stream storage reservoirs. Research, development and innovation play an important role in supporting informed decision-making. Therefore, further scientific and engineering studies are also needed for the development of financially affordable, safe and efficient infrastructure services in the areas of drinking water supply, sanitation and hygiene and its components. The article considers a particular reservoir the bottom of which is composed of saline soils operating in regular filling and emptying and subject to significant wind effects. The research conducted allowed to find a place of water intake location which provides a minimum salt content in the water abstracted.
