    The spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) is a newly introduced extension of snapshot POD that recently gained attention but also brought up controversial issues. Within the first proposition, the approach was mainly presented in a methodological and phenomenological way. The present paper will detail the relations between SPOD and related POD approaches from an analytical point of view. To allow for a better grasp of the approach, an alternative formulation is given that is based on the classic idea from Lumley that was carried on by George. As will be shown, SPOD is closely related to POD with a prior segmentation and Fourier transformation in time. Moreover, the SPOD is shown to be equivalent to snapshot POD combined with time delay embedding.

    The harmony between environment and buildings is the strongest point of vernacular architecture. In this context, the Mediterranean vernacular architecture is harmonized with its local context, including culture and traditions. In addition, it respects environmental and climatic factors, construction materials and morphology. In the past, people in Palestine built their houses according to their possibilities, needs, available materials, topography, and culture. Without any control from the government or any legal limitations or architects, it was people architecture, simple architecture. This paper discusses the differences between vernacular and contemporary cities of Palestine at the urban scale. The research methodology adopts explanatory qualitative analysis and comparative synthesis methods for both the old and the new area of the city of Nablus and considers many parameters of the cities such as the city layout, skyline, infrastructure and public spaces. The outcomes of this research allow understanding how the new city is far away from the sustainability principles and how the old city is closer to it and how the architects and stakeholders could learn from the strategies of vernacular architecture. The paper draws a set of recommendations for more in-depth studies, based on quantitative survey with energy efficiency measurements in the Mediterranean climate.

    Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to solid waste management (SWM) techniques being practiced in the North eastern region of Nigeria are unaccounted for as such these emissions cannot be monitored or controlled. This research estimated GHG emissions into the atmosphere from the current SWM technique practiced in the region, GHG emissions from two different waste management techniques – open burning and incineration was also simulated. The research found that incineration with electricity recovery is the most suitable SWM process therefore suggested that the authorities and other stakeholders in the region should give it serious consideration.

    Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to solid waste management (SWM) techniques being practiced in the North eastern region of Nigeria are unaccounted for as such these emissions cannot be monitored or controlled. This research estimated GHG emissions into the atmosphere from the current SWM technique practiced in the region, GHG emissions from two different waste management techniques – open burning and incineration was also simulated. The research found that incineration with electricity recovery is the most suitable SWM process therefore suggested that the authorities and other stakeholders in the region should give it serious consideration.

    Abstract Low Voltage Distribution Grids (LVDGs) become highly unbalanced due to the advent of single-phase solar PV plants. As a result, the voltage and current levels of the neutral conductor show a significant increase. Therefore, monitoring of the entire state of the network is essential. However, the existing state estimation algorithms estimate voltage states of the phase conductors while ignoring the state of the neutral conductor. This paper presents a novel approach to estimate the complete state of the LVDGs. A novel state reduction method was introduced to model the three-phase four-wire feeder line using a 3 × 3 admittance matrix, which incorporates the neutral coupling effect on phase conductors. Next, the reduced admittance matrix together with the linear approximations of active and reactive power functions were combined to formulate the Low Voltage-Linear State Estimation (LV-LSE) algorithm. Finally, the performance of LV-LSE algorithm was analyzed for different measurement uncertainties, scales of line lengths of the network, and data-loss conditions. Results show that, for all the cases, LV-LSE algorithm together with the proposed reduction method can estimate voltage states with an average maximum voltage magnitude error of less than 4.32 × 10 - 3 pu and current states with an average maximum current magnitude error of less than 1.81 × 10 - 3 pu.

    Abstract Fatigue life calculations have been made for suspended spans of offshore pipelines exposed to steady flow and undergoing vortex-induced vibrations. The effect of the proximity of the sea bottom was taken into account by utilizing the results of related model tests. It was found that the effect of the sea-bottom proximity is to increase the fatigue life of a suspended span of given length or equivalently to increase the safe length of a suspended span for a given fatigue life. Furthermore, the effect of the pipe-to-wall gap to pipe diameter ratio on the fatigue life of such spans has been determined. INTRODUCTION A steady flow about a bluff body, such as a pipeline with a circular cross section, will separate and form a wake. Because of the instability and mutual interaction of the separated shear layers, vortices form and periodically shed from alternate sides of the body. The result is steady and unsteady drag forces in line with the flow and unsteady lift forces? in the transverse, or cross flow direction. If the pipeline is flexible and/or flexibly supported, it begins to vibrate under the action of these periodic forces. The vibrations of the pipeline modify the flow and lead to a nonlinear interaction between the elastic and the fluid systems. The maximum amplitude of inline vortex-induced vibrations is much smaller than the maximum amplitude of transverse vortex induced vibrations, so their contribution to the fatigue life of a pipeline is small. Consequently, attention is focused on the transverse vibrations which will be referred to as "vortex induced vibrations" hereafter. In the last ten years a number of comprehensive overviews of this important class of fluid-structure interaction problems have appeared [1-4]. Experience with unburied offshore pipelines laid in strong current areas has shown that such pipelines may develop unsupported spans due to sea bottom being scoured out from under the pipe due to current action. In turn such unsupported spans exposed to currents may undergo vortex induced vibrations which may affect the fatigue life of the pipeline. Due to lack of data for the vortex-induced vibrations of a flexible cylinder in close proximity to a plane boundary, fatigue life calculations of suspended pipeline spans that determine the maximum safe length of such spans have been based, out of necessity, on data for the vortex-induced vibrations of an isolated flexible cylinder, i.e., no wall effect. In a recent experimental study, Tsahalis and Jones [5] determined the effect of the proximity of a plane boundary on the vortex-induced vibrations of a flexible pipe. They found that the proximity of the plane boundary has the following effects on the response of the pipe as compared to the response of the isolated pipe, i.e., no wall effect (see also Figure 1). First, the increase of the response frequency with the flow velocity is less steep. Second, the first perceptible vibrations take place at a higher flow velocity. Fourth, the maximum amplitude is achieved at a higher flow velocity. Fifth, the maximum amplitude is reduced. Sixth, once the maximum amplitude is achieved it appears that it remains constant for higher flow velocities.

    Abstract Fatigue life calculations have been made for suspended spans of offshore pipelines exposed to steady flow and undergoing vortex-induced vibrations. The effect of the proximity of the sea bottom was taken into account by utilizing the results of related model tests. It was found that the effect of the sea-bottom proximity is to increase the fatigue life of a suspended span of given length or equivalently to increase the safe length of a suspended span for a given fatigue life. Furthermore, the effect of the pipe-to-wall gap to pipe diameter ratio on the fatigue life of such spans has been determined. INTRODUCTION A steady flow about a bluff body, such as a pipeline with a circular cross section, will separate and form a wake. Because of the instability and mutual interaction of the separated shear layers, vortices form and periodically shed from alternate sides of the body. The result is steady and unsteady drag forces in line with the flow and unsteady lift forces? in the transverse, or cross flow direction. If the pipeline is flexible and/or flexibly supported, it begins to vibrate under the action of these periodic forces. The vibrations of the pipeline modify the flow and lead to a nonlinear interaction between the elastic and the fluid systems. The maximum amplitude of inline vortex-induced vibrations is much smaller than the maximum amplitude of transverse vortex induced vibrations, so their contribution to the fatigue life of a pipeline is small. Consequently, attention is focused on the transverse vibrations which will be referred to as "vortex induced vibrations" hereafter. In the last ten years a number of comprehensive overviews of this important class of fluid-structure interaction problems have appeared [1-4].     The accurate prediction of the solar Diffuse Fraction (DF), sometimes called the Diffuse Ratio, is an important topic for solar energy research. In the present study, the current state of Diffuse Irradiance research is discussed and then three robust, Machine Learning (ML) models, are examined using a large dataset (almost 8 years) of hourly readings from Almeria, Spain. The ML models used herein, are a hybrid Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), a single Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and a hybrid Multi-Layer Perceptron-Grey Wolf Optimizer (MLP-GWO). These models were evaluated for their predictive precision, using various Solar and Diffuse Fraction (DF) irradiance data, from Spain. The results were then evaluated using two frequently used evaluation criteria, the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results showed that the MLP-GWO model, followed by the ANFIS model, provided a higher performance, in both the training and the testing procedures.

    The accurate prediction of the solar Diffuse Fraction (DF), sometimes called the Diffuse Ratio, is an important topic for solar energy research. In the present study, the current state of Diffuse Irradiance research is discussed and then three robust, Machine Learning (ML) models, are examined using a large dataset (almost 8 years) of hourly readings from Almeria, Spain. The ML models used herein, are a hybrid Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), a single Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and a hybrid Multi-Layer Perceptron-Grey Wolf Optimizer (MLP-GWO). These models were evaluated for their predictive precision, using various Solar and Diffuse Fraction (DF) irradiance data, from Spain. The results were then evaluated using two frequently used evaluation criteria, the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results showed that the MLP-GWO model, followed by the ANFIS model, provided a higher performance, in both the training and the testing procedures.

    In this article, the results of investigation of processes occurring during the molecular-beam deposition of germanium layers on Si$_3$N$_4$ dielectric substrates within a wide range of the Ge film growth temperatures (30 to 600��C) are presented. The intensity of the IR absorption bands related to the vibrations of the N$-$H and Si$-$N bonds are established to decrease with the increase of the Ge deposition temperature. It appears that this phenomenon cannot be explained only as a thermally activated process. Simultaneously, the peak corresponding to the Ge$-$N vibration bonds emerges in the X-ray photoelectron spectra. We suppose that the deposition of germanium layers on Si3N4 dielectric substrates containing hydrogen atoms causes the diffusion of hydrogen atoms from the dielectric layer into the growing film. The experimental results may be interpreted in terms of a model, according to which the migration of hydrogen atoms from the Si$_3$N$_4$ layer into the growing germanium film is due to the difference in chemical potentials of hydrogen atoms in the dielectric layer and the germanium film. This process initiates the diffusion of germanium atoms in the opposite direction, into the Si$_3$N$_4$ layer, where they connect to free bonds of nitrogen atoms arising due to the escape of hydrogen atoms. The analogous processes occur during the deposition of silicon layers on Si$_3$N$_4$ substrates. 38 pages, 9 figures

    The spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) is a newly introduced extension of snapshot POD that recently gained attention but also brought up controversial issues. Within the first proposition, the approach was mainly presented in a methodological and phenomenological way. The present paper will detail the relations between SPOD and related POD approaches from an analytical point of view. To allow for a better grasp of the approach, an alternative formulation is given that is based on the classic idea from Lumley that was carried on by George. As will be shown, SPOD is closely related to POD with a prior segmentation and Fourier transformation in time. Moreover, the SPOD is shown to be equivalent to snapshot POD combined with time delay embedding.

    The harmony between environment and buildings is the strongest point of vernacular architecture. In this context, the Mediterranean vernacular architecture is harmonized with its local context, including culture and traditions. In addition, it respects environmental and climatic factors, construction materials and morphology. In the past, people in Palestine built their houses according to their possibilities, needs, available materials, topography, and culture. Without any control from the government or any legal limitations or architects, it was people architecture, simple architecture. This paper discusses the differences between vernacular and contemporary cities of Palestine at the urban scale. The research methodology adopts explanatory qualitative analysis and comparative synthesis methods for both the old and the new area of the city of Nablus and considers many parameters of the cities such as the city layout, skyline, infrastructure and public spaces. The outcomes of this research allow understanding how the new city is far away from the sustainability principles and how the old city is closer to it and how the architects and stakeholders could learn from the strategies of vernacular architecture. The paper draws a set of recommendations for more in-depth studies, based on quantitative survey with energy efficiency measurements in the Mediterranean climate.

    The harmony between environment and buildings is the strongest point of vernacular architecture. In this context, the Mediterranean vernacular architecture is harmonized with its local context, including culture and traditions. In addition, it respects environmental and climatic factors, construction materials and morphology. In the past, people in Palestine built their houses according to their possibilities, needs, available materials, topography, and culture. Without any control from the government or any legal limitations or architects, it was people architecture, simple architecture. This paper discusses the differences between vernacular and contemporary cities of Palestine at the urban scale. The research methodology adopts explanatory qualitative analysis and comparative synthesis methods for both the old and the new area of the city of Nablus and considers many parameters of the cities such as the city layout, skyline, infrastructure and public spaces. The outcomes of this research allow understanding how the new city is far away from the sustainability principles and how the old city is closer to it and how the architects and stakeholders could learn from the strategies of vernacular architecture. The paper draws a set of recommendations for more in-depth studies, based on quantitative survey with energy efficiency measurements in the Mediterranean climate.

    Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions due to solid waste management (SWM) techniques being practiced in the North eastern region of Nigeria are unaccounted for as such these emissions cannot be monitored or controlled. This research estimated GHG emissions into the atmosphere from the current SWM technique practiced in the region, GHG emissions from two different waste management techniques – open burning and incineration was also simulated. The research found that incineration with electricity recovery is the most suitable SWM process therefore suggested that the authorities and other stakeholders in the region should give it serious consideration.

    Abstract Low Voltage Distribution Grids (LVDGs) become highly unbalanced due to the advent of single-phase solar PV plants. As a result, the voltage and current levels of the neutral conductor show a significant increase. Therefore, monitoring of the entire state of the network is essential. However, the existing state estimation algorithms estimate voltage states of the phase conductors while ignoring the state of the neutral conductor. This paper presents a novel approach to estimate the complete state of the LVDGs. A novel state reduction method was introduced to model the three-phase four-wire feeder line using a 3 × 3 admittance matrix, which incorporates the neutral coupling effect on phase conductors. Next, the reduced admittance matrix together with the linear approximations of active and reactive power functions were combined to formulate the Low Voltage-Linear State Estimation (LV-LSE) algorithm. Finally, the performance of LV-LSE algorithm was analyzed for different measurement uncertainties, scales of line lengths of the network, and data-loss conditions. Results show that, for all the cases, LV-LSE algorithm together with the proposed reduction method can estimate voltage states with an average maximum voltage magnitude error of less than 4.32 × 10 - 3 pu and current states with an average maximum current magnitude error of less than 1.81 × 10 - 3 pu.

    Abstract Low Voltage Distribution Grids (LVDGs) become highly unbalanced due to the advent of single-phase solar PV plants. As a result, the voltage and current levels of the neutral conductor show a significant increase. Therefore, monitoring of the entire state of the network is essential. However, the existing state estimation algorithms estimate voltage states of the phase conductors while ignoring the state of the neutral conductor. This paper presents a novel approach to estimate the complete state of the LVDGs. A novel state reduction method was introduced to model the three-phase four-wire feeder line using a 3 × 3 admittance matrix, which incorporates the neutral coupling effect on phase conductors. Next, the reduced admittance matrix together with the linear approximations of active and reactive power functions were combined to formulate the Low Voltage-Linear State Estimation (LV-LSE) algorithm. Finally, the performance of LV-LSE algorithm was analyzed for different measurement uncertainties, scales of line lengths of the network, and data-loss conditions. Results show that, for all the cases, LV-LSE algorithm together with the proposed reduction method can estimate voltage states with an average maximum voltage magnitude error of less than 4.32 × 10 - 3 pu and current states with an average maximum current magnitude error of less than 1.81 × 10 - 3 pu.

    Abstract Fatigue life calculations have been made for suspended spans of offshore pipelines exposed to steady flow and undergoing vortex-induced vibrations. The effect of the proximity of the sea bottom was taken into account by utilizing the results of related model tests. It was found that the effect of the sea-bottom proximity is to increase the fatigue life of a suspended span of given length or equivalently to increase the safe length of a suspended span for a given fatigue life. Furthermore, the effect of the pipe-to-wall gap to pipe diameter ratio on the fatigue life of such spans has been determined. INTRODUCTION A steady flow about a bluff body, such as a pipeline with a circular cross section, will separate and form a wake. Because of the instability and mutual interaction of the separated shear layers, vortices form and periodically shed from alternate sides of the body. The result is steady and unsteady drag forces in line with the flow and unsteady lift forces? in the transverse, or cross flow direction. If the pipeline is flexible and/or flexibly supported, it begins to vibrate under the action of these periodic forces. The vibrations of the pipeline modify the flow and lead to a nonlinear interaction between the elastic and the fluid systems. The maximum amplitude of inline vortex-induced vibrations is much smaller than the maximum amplitude of transverse vortex induced vibrations, so their contribution to the fatigue life of a pipeline is small. Consequently, attention is focused on the transverse vibrations which will be referred to as "vortex induced vibrations" hereafter. In the last ten years a number of comprehensive overviews of this important class of fluid-structure interaction problems have appeared [1-4]. Experience with unburied offshore pipelines laid in strong current areas has shown that such pipelines may develop unsupported spans due to sea bottom being scoured out from under the pipe due to current action. In turn such unsupported spans exposed to currents may undergo vortex induced vibrations which may affect the fatigue life of the pipeline. Due to lack of data for the vortex-induced vibrations of a flexible cylinder in close proximity to a plane boundary, fatigue life calculations of suspended pipeline spans that determine the maximum safe length of such spans have been based, out of necessity, on data for the vortex-induced vibrations of an isolated flexible cylinder, i.e., no wall effect. In a recent experimental study, Tsahalis and Jones [5] determined the effect of the proximity of a plane boundary on the vortex-induced vibrations of a flexible pipe. They found that the proximity of the plane boundary has the following effects on the response of the pipe as compared to the response of the isolated pipe, i.e., no wall effect (see also Figure 1). First, the increase of the response frequency with the flow velocity is less steep. Second, the first perceptible vibrations take place at a higher flow velocity. Fourth, the maximum amplitude is achieved at a higher flow velocity. Fifth, the maximum amplitude is reduced. Sixth, once the maximum amplitude is achieved it appears that it remains constant for higher flow velocities.

    The accurate prediction of the solar Diffuse Fraction (DF), sometimes called the Diffuse Ratio, is an important topic for solar energy research. In the present study, the current state of Diffuse Irradiance research is discussed and then three robust, Machine Learning (ML) models, are examined using a large dataset (almost 8 years) of hourly readings from Almeria, Spain. The ML models used herein, are a hybrid Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), a single Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and a hybrid Multi-Layer Perceptron-Grey Wolf Optimizer (MLP-GWO). These models were evaluated for their predictive precision, using various Solar and Diffuse Fraction (DF) irradiance data, from Spain. The results were then evaluated using two frequently used evaluation criteria, the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results showed that the MLP-GWO model, followed by the ANFIS model, provided a higher performance, in both the training and the testing procedures.

    The accurate prediction of the solar Diffuse Fraction (DF), sometimes called the Diffuse Ratio, is an important topic for solar energy research. In the present study, the current state of Diffuse Irradiance research is discussed and then three robust, Machine Learning (ML) models, are examined using a large dataset (almost 8 years) of hourly readings from Almeria, Spain. The ML models used herein, are a hybrid Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), a single Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and a hybrid Multi-Layer Perceptron-Grey Wolf Optimizer (MLP-GWO). These models were evaluated for their predictive precision, using various Solar and Diffuse Fraction (DF) irradiance data, from Spain. The results were then evaluated using two frequently used evaluation criteria, the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The results showed that the MLP-GWO model, followed by the ANFIS model, provided a higher performance, in both the training and the testing procedures.

    In this article, the results of investigation of processes occurring during the molecular-beam deposition of germanium layers on Si$_3$N$_4$ dielectric substrates within a wide range of the Ge film growth temperatures (30 to 600��C) are presented. The intensity of the IR absorption bands related to the vibrations of the N$-$H and Si$-$N bonds are established to decrease with the increase of the Ge deposition temperature. It appears that this phenomenon cannot be explained only as a thermally activated process. Simultaneously, the peak corresponding to the Ge$-$N vibration bonds emerges in the X-ray photoelectron spectra. We suppose that the deposition of germanium layers on Si3N4 dielectric substrates containing hydrogen atoms causes the diffusion of hydrogen atoms from the dielectric layer into the growing film. The experimental results may be interpreted in terms of a model, according to which the migration of hydrogen atoms from the Si$_3$N$_4$ layer into the growing germanium film is due to the difference in chemical potentials of hydrogen atoms in the dielectric layer and the germanium film. This process initiates the diffusion of germanium atoms in the opposite direction, into the Si$_3$N$_4$ layer, where they connect to free bonds of nitrogen atoms arising due to the escape of hydrogen atoms. The analogous processes occur during the deposition of silicon layers on Si$_3$N$_4$ substrates. 38 pages, 9 figures
