description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2017Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Rodrigo Béttega; Thiago Faggion de Pádua; José Teixeira Freire; Ronaldo Correia de Brito;Abstract The energy consumption of spouted bed is an important issue that has been studied from various aspects. In order to investigate the energy consumption of the equipment, several experiments of drying of sorghum bicolor [Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench] were conducted and the results were evaluated looking for the energy performance of the spouted bed. A methodology that takes into account the mechanical energy necessary to maintain the spout regime on the global energy efficiency was proposed and the performance was determined based on the drying efficiency, energy efficiency, and specific energy consumption with and without the term corresponding to the mechanical contribution. This methodology permits a more rigorous evaluation of the energy performance of drying equipment. The percentage increase of the specific energy consumption due to inclusion of the mechanical energy was greater at higher loads and at lower temperatures, demonstrating that this term represented a significant portion of the energy consumption of the process.

The strategy aimed at transforming public entities, financed by the central budget, into self-sufficient professional companies regulated at arms' length. Nearly 20 years after, the reform has failed to deliver (despite some partial success). Italians have been divided in two parties: those blaming public sector inefficiencies and calling for competitive tendering; and those refusing to privatize water and willing to go back to the fiscal budget. In this article, we suggest that both parties are wrong. Underperformance is not related to the ownership structure of water companies, but rather to poor regulatory design and lack of understanding of the regulatory requirements that are implicit in the management model chosen, namely the concession contract.

The operation was performed using air as a fluidization gas in a riser (a 4-m-tall pipe with an inner diameter of 0.04 m) at a gas velocity ranging from 2.0 to 2.7 m/s and a riser temperature of 80 to 150°C. The electric heaters were installed in the upper part of a downcomer to prevent the condensation of the evaporated moist- ure. The drying rate of the coal was investigated in terms of the inlet gas temperature, the gas velocity, and the drying time in order to determine the optimum operating conditions. Changes in the moist- ure content of the coal, before and after the experiments, were char- acterized by a proximate analysis, an ultimate analysis, the higher heating value (HHV), the lower heating value (LHV), a particle size analysis, and by the equilibrium moisture content. The results show that ...

Spence; The operation of centrifugal pumps can generate instabilities and pressure pulsations that may be detrimental to the integrity and performance of the pump. In the present study a numerical investigation of the time variation of pressure within a complete centrifugal pump was undertaken. A range of parameters and three flow rates were investigated and the pulsations were extracted at 15 different locations covering important pump regions. The transient flow results compared reasonably with experimental data obtained in a limited experimental survey and clearly indicated the pump locations experiencing the largest pulsation levels. It was also noted that monitoring pulsations at the top dead centre of the pump volute casing would provide a better indication of internal pump pulsations than monitoring at the discharge.

Flue gas quench (FGQ) is playing an important role in biomass or waste fueled combined heat and power (CHP) plants, as it can link the flue gas (FG) cleaning, energy recovery and wastewater treatment. Enhancing water evaporation can benefit the concentrating of pollutant in the quench water; however, when FG condenser (FGC) is not in use, it results in a large consumption of fresh water. In order to deeply understand the operation of FGQ, a mathematic model was developed and validated against the measurements. Based on simulation results key parameters affecting FGQ have been identified, such as the flow rate and temperature of recycling water and the moisture content of FG. A guideline about how to reduce the discharge of wastewater to the external and the withdrawal of external water can be proposed. The mathematic model was also implemented into an ASPEN Plus model about a CHP plant to assess the impacts of FGQ on CHP. Results show that when the FGC was running, increasing the flow rate and decreasing the temperature of recycling water can result in a lower total energy efficiency.

The effects of temperature (220–300 °C), residence time (10–40 min), and the presence of CO2 (0–18% v/v) in the reacting gas were investigated on products’ yields, distribution, and torrefied pellet properties such as higher heating value (HHV), elemental composition (C, H, O, N, S, K, and Cl), grindability, and moisture uptake ability. Temperature and residence time were found to affect the distribution of products’ yield and the properties of torrefied pellets considerably. In comparison with the untreated biomass pellets, the torrefied pellets appeared to have improved HHV and grindability but reduced moisture uptake ability. In the presence of CO2, the Boudouard reaction caused slight reductions in the C content and HHV of the torrefied pellets. Changes in torrefaction conditions did not prove to have a statistically significant effect on S, K, and Cl contents of the torrefied biomass materials.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2016Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Ashutosh Kumar; Ryosuke Okuno;Abstract Bitumen recovery by steam-solvent coinjection involves the coupled thermal/compositional mechanisms for reduction of bitumen viscosity. Reliable design of such processes requires reservoir flow simulation based on a proper phase-behavior model so that the oleic-phase viscosity near the steam-chamber edge can be modeled reliably. However, the effect of bitumen characterization (e.g., the number of pseudo components used) on steam-solvent coinjection simulation has not been studied in detail, and can be realized only after running multiple reservoir simulations, which is time consuming. There are two main objectives in this paper. One is to develop a reliable method for bitumen characterization by improving the fluid characterization method that was recently developed based on perturbation from n-alkanes (PnA). The other is to develop a novel analytical method for assessing the sensitivity of a particular coinjection simulation to bitumen characterization without having to perform reservoir simulations. A simulation case study is given to validate this analytical method. A proper number of pseudo components for bitumen characterization cannot be determined without considering the effect of phase behavior on the oleic-phase viscosity at chamber-edge conditions in steam-solvent coinjection simulation. Results show that the analytical method developed in this research can detect the sensitivity of recovery simulation to bitumen characterization without performing multiple flow simulations using different sets of fluid models. The PnA-based method developed for bitumen characterization gives reliable predictions of phase behavior for bitumen/solvent mixtures with a small amount of experimental data.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2016Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Majid Sadeqzadeh; Ali Ghannadzadeh;Ammonia production through more efficient technologies can be achieved using exergy analysis. Ammonia production is one of the most important but also one of most energy consuming processes in the chemical industry. Based on a panel of solutions previously developed, this study helps to identify potential areas of improvement using an exergy analysis that covers all aspects of conventional ammonia synthesis and separation. The total internal and external exergy losses are calculated as 3,152 and 6,364 kJ/kg, respectively. The process is then divided into five main functional blocks based on their exergy losses. The reforming block contains the largest exergy loss (3,098 kJ/kg) and thus the largest potential for improvement including preheating cold feed through an economizer, developing technology towards isobaric mixing, and pressure drop reduction in the secondary reformer as the main contributors to the irreversibility (1,302 kJ/kg) in this block. The second largest exergy loss resides in the ammonia synthesis block (3,075 kJ/kg) where solutions such as reduced temperature rise across the compressor, proper compressor isolation, reducing undesired components such as argon in the reactor feed, and using lower temperatures for reactor outlet streams, are proposed to decrease the exergy losses. Throttling process in the syngas separator is the key contributing mechanism for the irreversibility (1,635 kJ/kg exergy losses) in the gas upgrading block. The exergy losses in the residual ammonia removal block (833 kJ/kg exergy losses) are mainly due to the stripper and the absorber column where a modified column design might be helpful. The highest exergy loss in the preheating block belongs to the compressors (518 kJ/kg exergy losses) where a lower inlet temperature and better system isolation could help to reduce losses.
