Le emissioni di gas serra ed inquinanti sono comunque tutt'altro che trascurabili, e includono rilevanti quantità di polveri fini. Nel caso di nuovi impianti di grandi dimensioni, l'autorizzazione andrebbe concessa con cautela ed in presenza di adeguate misure compensative sulla qualità dell'aria, seguendo l'esempio della legislazione statunitense.
