description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2017Publisher:Springer Science and Business Media LLC Authors: Victoria Marin-Burgos; Joy S. Clancy; Background: The global palm oil market experienced a remarkable boom since the year 2000. Since palm oil can be used for biodiesel production, the global expansion of oil palm cultivation has been associated with the global biofuel boom. Biofuel policies—especially those adopted in the European Union (EU)—have been blamed for the socio-environmental impacts of oil palm expansion. We explore how the global biofuel boom interacts with national geographies and social-economic and political processes to produce country-specific trajectories of biofuel crops expansion. We analyse the expansion of oil palm cultivation in Colombia between 2000 and 2010 from a political ecology perspective. Methods: The analysis is based on a framework that positions expansion of commodity frontiers within the ‘space-of-flows’ and the ‘space-of-place’. Through this approach, we identify the markets and geographies that define the country-specific trajectories of expansion of oil palm in Colombia, and their connections with general patterns of land control. The empirical analysis is based on primary data collected during fieldwork, and on an extensive review of secondary data about the palm oil sector and the socio-environmental effects of oil palm expansion in the country. Results: The contemporary oil palm expansion in Colombia was not specifically influenced by the international biofuel market. Expansion was characterized by an increasing production of palm oil for biodiesel, to supply a policy-driven national biofuel market controlled by national palm oil producers. The evidence shows that this oil palm expansion proceeded through a variety of land control practices that constitute forms of ‘accumulation by dispossession’ and ‘assimilation’. These are embedded in contextual factors that include the agrarian history of Colombia, the armed conflict, and government policies. Conclusions: Our study shows that the ways in which expansion of biofuel crops unfold in each producing country depend not only on the global biofuel market. They are also shaped by the country-specific geographies and political economies. Therefore, research and policies on the global expansion of energy crops should account for the complex and interrelated factors that mediate the specific ways in which the global demand for biofuels creates biofuel crop booms at country level.

El Bassam; H. P. Grimm;Abstract The proposed innovative approach identifies a new application for biomass. Bioenergy is used to drive a desalination unit which produces water for irrigating energy crops. Biomass is cultivated on artificial soil made by a mixture of local soil and organic compost from MSW (Municipal Solid Wastes). This agro-energy farm scheme aims at rescuing arid lands near to the sea. The study defines a techno-economic compromise among energy crops, biomass generator, desalination unit and irrigation system, considering an arid area (10 ha) of Tenerife as reference case study. A small experimental activity (100 m 2 ) has also been performed on site. A Sweet Sorghum cultivation, a bioenergy generator, a reverse osmosis plant and drip irrigation system have been chosen. The main result of the study is that the possibility of retaining some 14–20% surplus (in terms of biomass or energy or water) exists. The system is energetically feasible: rescued land can be doubled in approximately 4 yr. This approach is applicable to many Mediterranean coastal areas, as well as other similar situations elsewhere.

This study evaluated the environmental conditions of two watersheds selected on the basis of similarities in land use. The environmental conditions of the watersheds were analyzed using two geoprocessing methods and in situ evaluations by applying the rapid assessment protocol (RAP). Geospatial image processing was used to analyze land use, slope, soil classification, and rainfall, while RAP was used to evaluate the connectivity and size of riparian corridors. The results revealed varied uses of land with the landscape matrix in both watersheds, composed of agriculture, pasture, and urban centers. Urban centers were defined as spots and riparian zones as corridors. The analysis of environmental fragility considering all the geospatial variables, classified both watersheds as having medium fragility. The most fragile sites were the urban centers, which had a high slope and degraded riparian zone. Onsite assessments have shown that corridors do not have the size required by legislation; they are fragmented and unstructured, and they contain exotic species. We also propose that a multi-factorial approach be used to evaluate watersheds, associating geospatial assessments and onsite analyses that consider the limitations pointed out in each protocol. This reduces sampling errors and shows the actual state of conservation in riparian zones.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2020Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Ismail Adal Guiamel; Han Soo Lee;This study aims to identify potential hydropower sites and calculate the theoretical potential hydropower capacity based on watershed modelling of the Mindanao River Basin (MRB) in the Philippines for the sustainable development of a previously unstudied region. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was applied to delineate the watershed of the MRB and simulate the river discharges with inputs from observed precipitation and global gridded precipitation datasets. Observed weather data, such as temperature, humidity, and solar radiation, from four meteorological stations in the Philippines were also used as inputs for SWAT modelling. Simulated discharges were calibrated at three river gauges on the Nituan, Libungan and Pulangi Rivers. However, due to limited river discharge records, model validations were conducted in proxy basins: the calibrated model parameters in river A were used in the watershed modelling of proxy river B. Of the delineated 107 sub-basins in the MRB watershed, only 33 were identified as having potential sites for hydropower development. These potential sub-basins hosted a total of 154 potential sites with an estimated monthly average power capacity of 5,551.35 MW for all 33 sub-basins. The estimated theoretical power capacity of 15,266.22 MW for all sites in the MRB is approximately equivalent to the Philippines’ total available power capacity in 2017 of 15,393 MW. These sites were classified into 16 mini-scale hydropower sites, 114 small-scale hydropower sites and 24 medium-scale hydropower sites based on the simulated river discharges and potential power capacities. Based on these results, hydropower development could be an alternative to strengthen the exploration of renewable energy resources and improve the energy situation in Mindanao; hydropower development could also have mitigation effects on frequent floods in flat, low-lying downstream areas.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2021Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Thi Thu Ha Nguyen; Roger Sathre; Uniben Yao Ayikoe Tettey; Leif Gustavsson;Abstract Forests can help mitigate climate change in different ways, such as by storing carbon in forest ecosystems, and by producing a renewable supply of material and energy products. We analyse the climate implications of different scenarios for forestry, bioenergy and wood construction. We consider three main forestry scenarios for Kronoberg County in Sweden, over a 201-year period. The Business-as-usual scenario mirrors today's forestry while in the Production scenario the forest productivity is increased by 40% through more intensive forestry. In the Set-aside scenario 50% of forest land is set-aside for conservation. The Production scenario results in less net carbon dioxide emissions and cumulative radiative forcing compared to the other scenarios, after an initial period of 30–35 years during which the Set-aside scenario has less emissions. In the end of the analysed period, the Production scenario yields strong emission reductions, about ten times greater than the initial reduction in the Set-aside scenario. Also, the Set-aside scenario has higher emissions than Business-as-usual after about 80 years. Increasing the harvest level of slash and stumps results in climate benefits, due to replacement of more fossil fuel. Greatest emission reduction is achieved when biomass replaces coal, and when modular timber buildings are used. In the long run, active forestry with high harvest and efficient utilisation of biomass for replacement of carbon-intensive non-wood products and fuels provides significant climate mitigation, in contrast to setting aside forest land to store more carbon in the forest and reduce the harvest of biomass.

The critical elements that cause fouling and corrosion problems in boilers are alkali and chlorine which are released during combustion. The concentrations of these are reduced by a factor of 2 to 6 by using the delayed harvest system rather than harvesting in the end of the growing season. The loss of some leaf material and leaching of alkali also contributes to an increase in the ash fusion temperature from 1070°C to 1400°C. This work is part of a project in progress involving 14 different field trials distributed all over Sweden. Results are presented demonstrating that ash content is influenced by the type of soil. The most extreme variations are between reed canary grass grown on high clay content soils and those produced on very humic soils, with ash contents of 10.1% and 2.2%, respectively.

In urban planning, urban parks are one of the methods for improving the thermal environment and saving cooling energy. Urban park construction can mitigate temperature, but it also causes urban development by increasing local attractiveness. To achieve efficient energy saving through parks in urban planning, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between building energy consumption and urban characteristics both before and after the construction of an urban park. This study targeted Seoul's Gyeongui line forest, which was recently converted into a linear park on the former railway as an urban regeneration project. We analyzed the relationship between energy consumption and urban characteristics using a regression model, focusing on the changes before and after the construction. In this study, urban characteristics include environment, building physical characteristics, and economic variables. The results show that the construction of the urban park reduced not only temperature but also building energy consumption. The energy reduction effect of the park was limited to a marginal distance. Meanwhile, the urban park construction caused land prices to rise and prompted new development, and this changed the urban characteristics of the area and affected energy consumption. Despite changes in urban characteristics, urban park planning is an effective methods of reducing the energy consumption involved in cooling urban areas. We recommend comprehensive consideration of the urban factors when making park policy to reduce urban temperature and energy consumption.
