description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2023 PortugalAuthors: Anzini, Riccardo;Small kitchen appliances are integral parts of our households, and many businesses started to introduce kitchen appliances in the market with sustainable features. This is why more and more consumers want their households to be sustainable in terms of consumptions and they care about the materials of the appliances standing for instance. However, there are few studies on the purchase intention of sustainable small kitchen appliances. For this reason, this dissertation aims at understanding what are the main drivers, barriers, and potential user profiles when it comes to the adoption of sustainable small kitchen appliances for Benelux consumers. After an overview on the market dynamics and a brief competitive benchmark analysis, a literature review has been conducted, then a research framework has been built. Interviews have been used to develop hypotheses as a way of answering to the research questions of this dissertation while an online questionnaire has been created to collect data to be subsequently analyzed. The results show that brand image, energy efficient features and price considerations are key for Benelux consumers. Also, relevant considerations are done based on consumers’ gender, age, and education. Finally, some managerial implications are highlighted for small kitchen appliance companies.

However, the revision of all policy areas in line with the objectives and a conducive trajectory of the green transition is proving a major challenge, above all because member state policies and actions are not consistent with the long-term policy objectives they had subscribed to in the first place. On the upside, EU institutions, notably the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB), have been responding to the challenge by adapting rules and policies, which will have a positive effect in the long run. To deliver price stability the ECB needs to take into account all factors affecting inflation and climate change is one of them. Besides the primary objective of keeping prices stable, the ECB’s secondary objectives, notably contributing to a high level of protection and improvement of the quality of the environment, are fundamental to ensure not only environmental sustainability but also EMU’s and the EU’s sustainability. However, those rules and policies also depend on the wider EU regulatory framework, which needs the approval of member states. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This thesis explores the hypotheses by conducting an experiment (survey) with t-shirts as the material, that is manipulated between two conditions, high and low involvement, to see if participants, when processing the information about the t-shirts, are more inclined to use the label as a cue to make a decision, and if the participants are more likely to use the label in the low or high involvement condition. The t-shirts also come with either a positive or negative product description that portrayed the t-shirts sustainable/non-sustainable aspects. 106 evaluations are collected between the two conditions, and then analysed based on dual-process theories. The result from the study shows that t-shirts with sustainability labels are always preferred over t-shirts without labels, and labels are used by participants to make other inferences about the t-shirts: t-shirts with labels are perceived as superior over t-shirts without label, and that involvement only affected participants when there was no label present. The t-shirts with a positive product description are always ranked higher than those with a negative product description.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2022 PortugalAuthors: Engels, Leonard Jörg;Demand for electric vehicles has grown rapidly in recent years. One of the main drivers of the increase in demand is the environmental damage owed to traffic. This is because the environment is harmed by the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions caused by a vehicle without an alternative drive system, like vehicles with a petrol engine. The problem is also well known in Germany. As a measure to reduce CO2 emissions in road traffic, the German government offers incentives in the form of monetary subsidies. Such incentives aim to motivate consumers to purchase an electric vehicle in order to reduce environmental pollution. This dissertation will investigate which factors motivate German consumers to purchase such an electric vehicle. As a tool, this study used the theory of planned behavior (TPB) by Ajzen (1991) after it was extended by Shalender & Sharma (2020) and adapted to the aims of this study. The extension added the predictors of moral norm and environmental concerns to TPB’s variables: attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control. Findings of this study show a significant effect of the five mentioned predictors on purchase behavior. Thus, this research suggests it is important to consider these factors when developing interventions to increase electric vehicle purchase.

The Alkire–Foster method is used to develop the Multidimensional Climate Action Index (MCAI) framework. Regarding individual MSs’ overall performance, the results show that Sweden (Northern Europe) performs the best and Croatia (Central and Eastern Europe) the worst. In terms of the average overall performance of individual MSs in the EU-27 and its supranational regions, only Western and Northern Europe have satisfactory scores. Moreover, the performances of the various territories differ by target. This territorial heterogeneity illustrates how the SDG13 targets may require different efforts in each territory. The scores for the MCAI group measure depict an even worse picture. Except for Northern Europe, the proportion of MSs with a satisfactory individual overall composite score (H) is lower than their average overall composite score or intensity (A). The two regions with the lowest H scores (Southern Europe and Central and Eastern Europe) also have the lowest A scores and the lowest average GDP per capita.

Olena Liakh in OpenAIREApart from the many social and health problems it has caused, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on most sectors of the economy worldwide. One of the areas where such impact is noticeable is the textile, apparel, and fashion (TAF) industry. The lockdowns and limited access to retailer outlets resulted in a considerable drop in consumption, creating problems related to the excess of stock, the decrease of sales, and the disposal of non-used items. This paper outlines the implications of the COVID-19 on the TAF sectors and European retailers. It analyzes how the current supply chains exacerbated stock control problems, and it reports on the changes in consumption during the pandemic. The worldwide restrictive measures implemented to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic were responsible for significant profit losses. Also, the decrease in consumption, caused by several geographically wide lockdowns, prompted a subsequent reduction in orders and sales, resulting in a significant number of constraints. The implementation of more environmentally friendly processes, including sustainable circularity as a competitiveness source to keep the TAF sectors in the loop and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, may help address the problems associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in the sustainability context, as reported in this paper.

Kemal Aganovic in OpenAIREManothermosonication (MTS) is a promising alternative to thermal preservation of liquid whole egg (LWE) in terms of safety level and improved quality. However, energy and sustainability assessment of MTS are not well described. This study compared the energy balance and life cycle assessment (LCA) of MTS to traditional thermal preservation of LWE, considering equivalent microbial inactivation levels and a production capacity of 100 kg/h within a “gate to gate” approach. Results of the energy assessment indicated that MTS preservation consumed 15% less energy (2.00 kWh/kg of LWE) and water compared to thermal preservation (2.36 kWh/kg of LWE). This reduction is attributable to cavitation, the mechanism of action in MTS, which eliminates the need of pre-homogenisation stage and water for heating. Concerning the environmental impact, MTS scored lower in all impact indicators, mainly due to reduced electricity and water usage. For instance, carbon footprint of CO2 emissions from LWE processing were 57.3% for MTS and 61.8% for thermal preservation, with the environmental impact of the pasteurisation stage being 4.1-fold lower in MTS. This study suggests MTS preservation of LWE is a viable alternative to thermal methods, offering safety, quality, and improved energy and environmental benefits. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2024 PortugalAuthors: Alonso, Luís Correia; In a rapidly evolving world, discussions about sustainability have become more common. Nevertheless, in the housing construction sector, the frequent and casual use of the term "sustainable" may have inadvertently diluted its profound meaning. Thus, the question that gives rise to this investigation is: How do companies in the residential construction sector, which label themselves as adherents to “green” and “sustainable” practices, effectively meet these requirements? Therefore, the objective of this work is to identify gaps and difficulties present on the housing construction sector, aiming to implement measures that effectively promote sustainability, aligning with the currently established Sustainable Development Goals. The flourishing construction industry and the widespread endorsement of terms such as “green” and “sustainable” have sparked a compelling investigation into the distinction between companies that lay claim to these labels and those that do not. This research originates an exploration of the confluence of the construction sector with sustainability, drawing insights from established literature and engaging in exploratory interviews with key industry stakeholders, including administrators, engineers, and architects. These exploratory interviews, allowing the interviewee to lead the interview, provided by an unbiased perspective on housing construction processes and offer guidance for a more sustainable future. Thus, it became possible to identify several problems that arise throughout the entire construction process, which can be summarized into four groups: Financial and Economic Challenges; Political and Regulatory Challenges; Operational and Planning Challenges; Knowledge and Awareness Challenges.

Inequality in income distribution is a theme which has been much debated recently, especially after the economic crisis started in 2007-2008, which is often connected to an increase in inequality. As economic theory evolved, there was a relative neglect of the theme of distribution. For the classics the distribution of the surplus was a fundamental theme, with impact not only on individual well-being, but also on economic and social sustainability. With the increasing mathematization of economics, distribution is studied as a technical question. Furthermore, there has been a paradigm shift, in which economics became no longer the science which studies the production and distribution of the surplus, but rather a science centered on scarcity. In this context, in which distribution is neglected from the point of view of economic theory, the return of the theme of inequality to economic discussion focuses essentially on its empirical measurement, through various synthetic indexes that have been developed. However, authors like Sraffa and Sen are seen as the originators of a revival of classical political economy, where distribution is an essential theme. Besides, Sen considers a multidimensional approach to inequality, considering that the latter cannot be measured only in terms of income, but also in terms of capabilities.
