In order to achieve more efficient generating systems, a second generation of parabolic troughs that operate at temperatures higher than 400ºC is being developed. One possibility, Abengoa Solar is assessing, it is the use of direct steam generation (DSG) inside parabolic troughs in order to achieve higher temperatures; the first stage heating up to 450 ºC and the second stage heating up to 550 ºC. There is, however, a certain degree of complexity in the use of DSG technology that has resulted in it not yet being utilized in commercial plant designs. Due to the presence of saturated steam inside the parallel loops the required control system is more complex, particularly during transitory periods of radiation. Also the higher operating pressures and temperatures in the solar field mean that the receiver tubes and interconnections between collectors are very critical components. For this reason, typical systems utilize an intermediate fluid for energy transfer. In order to overcome these challenges, Abengoa Solar has built a demonstration plant of 8 MWht. The plant is composed of an evaporator field with three parallel loops and a superheater field with two loops in order to work at 85 bar and 450ºC. The demonstration plant has been operated and evaluated for one year. During this test period, the following have been evaluated and validated: An innovative control strategy system that guarantees the stability of the plant even under transient conditions. Receiver tube design able to achieve 450ºC, analyzing the mechanical behavior, optical performance, and heat losses. Different configurations of interconnections between collectors with ball joints and flexible rotation joints. A theoretical model has been developed for commercial scale DSG plants and validated with experimental data obtained from the demonstration plant.

The AC part of studied system is comprised of conventional generators and HVAC lines, while DC systems are related to the parts with converter station models and HVDC interconnection. Simulations performed by Matlab software demonstrate how renewable power plants can serve as conventional generators in AGC control loops under constraints determined by the market rules. This scenery is considered one of the most promising evolutions of the future electrical power systems.

New measurements of very exotic nuclei in the neutron-rich region beyond N=126 have been performed at the GSI facility with the fragment separator (FRS). The aim of the experiment is to determine half-lives and beta-delayed neutron emission branching ratios of isotopes of Hg, Tl and Pb in this region. This contribution summarizes final counting statistics for identification and for implantation, as well as the present status of the data analysis of the half-lives. In summary, isotopes of Pt, Au, Hg, Ti, Pb, Bi, Po, At, Rn and Fr were clearly identified and several of them (Hg208-211, Tl211-215, Pb214-218) were implanted with enough statistics to determine their half-lives. About half of them are expected to be neutron emitters, in such cases it will become possible to obtain the neutron emission probabilities, P-n.

In this work we present a new method for the modeling and simulation study of a photovoltaic grid connected system and its experimental validation. This method has been applied in the simulation of a grid connected PV system with a rated power of 3.2 Kwp, composed by a photovoltaic generator and a single phase grid connected inverter. First, a PV module, forming part of the whole PV array is modeled by a single diode lumped circuit and main parameters of the PV module are evaluated. Results obtained for the PV module characteristics have been validated experimentally by carrying out outdoorI–Vcharacteristic measurements. To take into account the power conversion efficiency, the measured AC output power against DC input power is fitted to a second order efficiency model to derive its specific parameters.The simulation results have been performed through Matlab/Simulink environment. Results has shown good agreement with experimental data, whether for theI–Vcharacteristics or for the whole operating system. The significant error indicators are reported in order to show the effectiveness of the simulation model to predict energy generation for such PV system. Peer Reviewed

What commonalities are there in sustainable or unsustainable heating practices in five high-income, high-emitting western European countries? What preferences do a nationally representative sample of the public in these countries hold towards low-carbon options? It is imperative that climate policy researchers and practitioners grapple with the difficulty of decarbonizing heat, which remains the largest single end-use service worldwide and which accounts about half of total final energy consumption. Based on a comparative assessment of five representative national surveys in Germany (N = 2009), Italy (N = 2039), Spain (N = 2038), Sweden (N = 2023), and the United Kingdom (N = 2000), this study explores the demographics and geography of household heat decarbonisation in Europe. By analyzing our country level data as well as our combined sample of 10,109 respondents, it investigates how people conceive of the purposes of low-carbon heat, their preferences for particular forms of heat supply, and their (at times odd) practices of heat consumption and temperature settings. Grounded in its original data, the study organizes its findings inductively across the five themes of literacy (heating knowledge, awareness and control), sustainability (heating practices, dynamics and conflicts), temperature (heating satisfaction and preferences), desirability of change (low-carbon heating priorities, business models and trust), and culture (country and national variation). The study also explores intersections between these dimensions, using multivariate analysis, as well as how preferences differ according to varying types of actors as well as geography and space. Cellulose-based supercapacitors display important advantages in comparison with devices fabricated with other materials, regarding environmental friendliness, flexibility, cost and versatility. Recent progress in the field has been mainly focused on the utilization of cellulose fibres as: structural mechanical reinforcement of electrodes; precursors of electrically active carbon-based materials; or primary electrolytes that act as reservoirs of secondary electrolytes. In this work, a flexible, lightweight, robust, portable and manageable all-carboxymethyl cellulose symmetric supercapacitor has been obtained by assembling two electrodes based on carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels to a solid electrolytic medium formulated with the same material. Hydrogels, which were made by cross-linking carboxymethyl cellulose paste with citric acid in water, rendered not only effective solid electrolytic media by simply loading NaCl but also electroactive electrodes. For the latter, conducting polymer microparticles, which were loaded into the hydrogel network during the physical cross-linking step, were appropriately connected through the in situ anodic polymerization of a similar conducting polymer in aqueous medium, thus creating conduction paths. The performance of the assembled supercapacitors has been proved by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The RD 413/2014 new economic and regulatory framework for producers of electricity from renewable energy sources in Spain has been here analysed, putting the focus on its impact on the economic results of the existing grid connected PV systems. A complete formulation of the new remuneration scheme is first presented, making evident its high complexity and the great number of regulatory parameters involved. Then, in order to facilitate the discernment of its operating mechanism a simplified model is proposed. This approach has proven to be a useful tool to identify the most influential regulatory parameters and also which could be the plausible future regulatory actions in order to contain the cost to the Spanish Electricity System. Finally, the NPV and the IRR among other indicators are calculated for a representative case study facility, evidencing a substantial profitability reduction in the transition from the former economic and regulatory framework to the RD 413/2014 new remuneration scheme. Most existing commercial building energy management systems (BEMS) are reactive rule-based. This means that an action is produced when an event occurs. In consequence, these systems cannot predict future scenarios and anticipate events to optimize building operation. This paper presents the procedure of implementing a predictive control strategy in a commercial BEMS for boilers in buildings, and describes the results achieved. The proposed control is based on a neural network that turns on the boiler each day at the optimum time, according to the surrounding environment, to achieve thermal comfort levels at the beginning of the working day. The control strategy presented in this paper is compared with the current control strategy implemented in BEMS that is based on scheduled on/off control. The control strategy was tested during one heating season and a set of key performance indicators were used to assess the benefits of the proposed control strategy. The results showed that the implementation of predictive control in a BEMS for building boilers can reduce the energy required to heat the building by around 20% without compromising the user’s comfort. The n TOF collaboration operates a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) [1] for measuring neu- tron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples. The results obtained with the TAC have led to a substantial improvement of the capture cross sections of 237Np and 240Pu [2]. The experience acquired during the rst measurements has allowed us to optimize the performance of the TAC and to improve the capture signal to background ratio, thus opening the way to more complex and demanding measurements on rare radioactive materials. The new design has been reached by a series of detailed Monte Carlo simulations of complete experiments and dedicated test measurements. The new capture setup will be presented and the main achievements highlighted.

In order to achieve more efficient generating systems, a second generation of parabolic troughs that operate at temperatures higher than 400ºC is being developed. One possibility, Abengoa Solar is assessing, it is the use of direct steam generation (DSG) inside parabolic troughs in order to achieve higher temperatures; the first stage heating up to 450 ºC and the second stage heating up to 550 ºC. There is, however, a certain degree of complexity in the use of DSG technology that has resulted in it not yet being utilized in commercial plant designs. Due to the presence of saturated steam inside the parallel loops the required control system is more complex, particularly during transitory periods of radiation. Also the higher operating pressures and temperatures in the solar field mean that the receiver tubes and interconnections between collectors are very critical components. For this reason, typical systems utilize an intermediate fluid for energy transfer. In order to overcome these challenges, Abengoa Solar has built a demonstration plant of 8 MWht. The plant is composed of an evaporator field with three parallel loops and a superheater field with two loops in order to work at 85 bar and 450ºC. The demonstration plant has been operated and evaluated for one year. During this test period, the following have been evaluated and validated: An innovative control strategy system that guarantees the stability of the plant even under transient conditions. Receiver tube design able to achieve 450ºC, analyzing the mechanical behavior, optical performance, and heat losses. Different configurations of interconnections between collectors with ball joints and flexible rotation joints. A theoretical model has been developed for commercial scale DSG plants and validated with experimental data obtained from the demonstration plant.

The AC part of studied system is comprised of conventional generators and HVAC lines, while DC systems are related to the parts with converter station models and HVDC interconnection. Simulations performed by Matlab software demonstrate how renewable power plants can serve as conventional generators in AGC control loops under constraints determined by the market rules. This scenery is considered one of the most promising evolutions of the future electrical power systems.

New measurements of very exotic nuclei in the neutron-rich region beyond N=126 have been performed at the GSI facility with the fragment separator (FRS). The aim of the experiment is to determine half-lives and beta-delayed neutron emission branching ratios of isotopes of Hg, Tl and Pb in this region. This contribution summarizes final counting statistics for identification and for implantation, as well as the present status of the data analysis of the half-lives. In summary, isotopes of Pt, Au, Hg, Ti, Pb, Bi, Po, At, Rn and Fr were clearly identified and several of them (Hg208-211, Tl211-215, Pb214-218) were implanted with enough statistics to determine their half-lives. About half of them are expected to be neutron emitters, in such cases it will become possible to obtain the neutron emission probabilities, P-n.

In this work we present a new method for the modeling and simulation study of a photovoltaic grid connected system and its experimental validation. This method has been applied in the simulation of a grid connected PV system with a rated power of 3.2 Kwp, composed by a photovoltaic generator and a single phase grid connected inverter. First, a PV module, forming part of the whole PV array is modeled by a single diode lumped circuit and main parameters of the PV module are evaluated. Results obtained for the PV module characteristics have been validated experimentally by carrying out outdoorI–Vcharacteristic measurements. To take into account the power conversion efficiency, the measured AC output power against DC input power is fitted to a second order efficiency model to derive its specific parameters.The simulation results have been performed through Matlab/Simulink environment. Results has shown good agreement with experimental data, whether for theI–Vcharacteristics or for the whole operating system. The significant error indicators are reported in order to show the effectiveness of the simulation model to predict energy generation for such PV system. Peer Reviewed

What commonalities are there in sustainable or unsustainable heating practices in five high-income, high-emitting western European countries? What preferences do a nationally representative sample of the public in these countries hold towards low-carbon options? It is imperative that climate policy researchers and practitioners grapple with the difficulty of decarbonizing heat, which remains the largest single end-use service worldwide and which accounts about half of total final energy consumption. Based on a comparative assessment of five representative national surveys in Germany (N = 2009), Italy (N = 2039), Spain (N = 2038), Sweden (N = 2023), and the United Kingdom (N = 2000), this study explores the demographics and geography of household heat decarbonisation in Europe. By analyzing our country level data as well as our combined sample of 10,109 respondents, it investigates how people conceive of the purposes of low-carbon heat, their preferences for particular forms of heat supply, and their (at times odd) practices of heat consumption and temperature settings. Grounded in its original data, the study organizes its findings inductively across the five themes of literacy (heating knowledge, awareness and control), sustainability (heating practices, dynamics and conflicts), temperature (heating satisfaction and preferences), desirability of change (low-carbon heating priorities, business models and trust), and culture (country and national variation). The study also explores intersections between these dimensions, using multivariate analysis, as well as how preferences differ according to varying types of actors as well as geography and space. Cellulose-based supercapacitors display important advantages in comparison with devices fabricated with other materials, regarding environmental friendliness, flexibility, cost and versatility. Recent progress in the field has been mainly focused on the utilization of cellulose fibres as: structural mechanical reinforcement of electrodes; precursors of electrically active carbon-based materials; or primary electrolytes that act as reservoirs of secondary electrolytes. In this work, a flexible, lightweight, robust, portable and manageable all-carboxymethyl cellulose symmetric supercapacitor has been obtained by assembling two electrodes based on carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels to a solid electrolytic medium formulated with the same material. Hydrogels, which were made by cross-linking carboxymethyl cellulose paste with citric acid in water, rendered not only effective solid electrolytic media by simply loading NaCl but also electroactive electrodes. For the latter, conducting polymer microparticles, which were loaded into the hydrogel network during the physical cross-linking step, were appropriately connected through the in situ anodic polymerization of a similar conducting polymer in aqueous medium, thus creating conduction paths. The performance of the assembled supercapacitors has been proved by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The RD 413/2014 new economic and regulatory framework for producers of electricity from renewable energy sources in Spain has been here analysed, putting the focus on its impact on the economic results of the existing grid connected PV systems. A complete formulation of the new remuneration scheme is first presented, making evident its high complexity and the great number of regulatory parameters involved. Then, in order to facilitate the discernment of its operating mechanism a simplified model is proposed. This approach has proven to be a useful tool to identify the most influential regulatory parameters and also which could be the plausible future regulatory actions in order to contain the cost to the Spanish Electricity System. Finally, the NPV and the IRR among other indicators are calculated for a representative case study facility, evidencing a substantial profitability reduction in the transition from the former economic and regulatory framework to the RD 413/2014 new remuneration scheme. Most existing commercial building energy management systems (BEMS) are reactive rule-based. This means that an action is produced when an event occurs. In consequence, these systems cannot predict future scenarios and anticipate events to optimize building operation. This paper presents the procedure of implementing a predictive control strategy in a commercial BEMS for boilers in buildings, and describes the results achieved. The proposed control is based on a neural network that turns on the boiler each day at the optimum time, according to the surrounding environment, to achieve thermal comfort levels at the beginning of the working day. The control strategy presented in this paper is compared with the current control strategy implemented in BEMS that is based on scheduled on/off control. The control strategy was tested during one heating season and a set of key performance indicators were used to assess the benefits of the proposed control strategy. The results showed that the implementation of predictive control in a BEMS for building boilers can reduce the energy required to heat the building by around 20% without compromising the user’s comfort. The n TOF collaboration operates a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) [1] for measuring neu- tron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples. The results obtained with the TAC have led to a substantial improvement of the capture cross sections of 237Np and 240Pu [2]. The experience acquired during the rst measurements has allowed us to optimize the performance of the TAC and to improve the capture signal to background ratio, thus opening the way to more complex and demanding measurements on rare radioactive materials. The new design has been reached by a series of detailed Monte Carlo simulations of complete experiments and dedicated test measurements. The new capture setup will be presented and the main achievements highlighted.
