    This thesis explores the interplay between green innovation, ESG, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, representing environmental performance, in the context of financial performance within the domain of corporate venture capital (CVC) investments. The investigation draws upon data spanning the period from 2002 to 2022, encompassing 69 American corporate investors. The inquiry encompasses the assessment of both the discrete and joint effects of green innovation and environmental performance on financial performance. The findings proffer a substantial framework that contributes to the developing discourse regarding the corporate sector's role in curtailing carbon emissions. The empirical results affirm that heightened green innovation, higher ESG scores, and superior environmental performance are conducive to improved financial outcomes for corporate investors. These outcomes carry significant ramifications for scholars and business leaders alike, as the incorporation of environmental considerations into corporate strategies stands poised to confer a lasting competitive advantage. Esta tese explora a interação entre inovação verde, ESG e emissões de gases de efeito estufa (GEE), representando o desempenho ambiental, no contexto do desempenho financeiro no domínio dos investimentos de capital de risco corporativo (CVC). A investigação baseia-se em dados que abrangem o período de 2002 a 2022, englobando 69 investidores empresariais americanos. A investigação abrange a avaliação dos efeitos discretos e conjuntos da inovação verde e do desempenho ambiental no desempenho financeiro. As conclusões oferecem um quadro substancial que contribui para o desenvolvimento do discurso sobre o papel do sector empresarial na redução das emissões de carbono. Os resultados empíricos afirmam que uma maior inovação verde, pontuações ESG mais elevadas e um desempenho ambiental superior conduzem a melhores resultados financeiros para os investidores empresariais. Estes resultados têm ramificações significativas tanto para académicos como para líderes empresariais, uma vez que a incorporação de considerações ambientais nas estratégias empresariais está preparada para conferir uma vantagem competitiva duradoura.

    Authors: Funder, Mira Mareike;

    This thesis analyzes the effect of transition risk from climate change on systemic risk in the financial sector in the Eurozone by estimating the expected capital shortfall of 237 publicly listed financial institutions in the Eurozone, conditional on a climate stress scenario, focusing on trends and concentration patterns. The capital shortfall is estimated utilizing a market-based top-down climate stress test methodology introduced by Jung et al. (2023), by first estimating time-varying Climate Betas for each financial institution through a rolling regression of the company stock returns on the returns of a Stranded Asset Portfolio, which is constructed to serve as a proxy for transition risk. Next, the variable CRISK is estimated, representing the expected capital shortfall of each financial institution under a stress scenario, represented by 50% decline in the return of the Stranded Asset Portfolio over a six-month period. The advantage of this methodology is that it estimates climate risk dynamically, and thus addresses its time-varying nature. Furthermore, it requires only publicly available data and relies on minimal assumptions (Jung et al., 2023). The findings of the analysis in this research thesis reveal a positive aggregate average CRISK of EUR 594,39 billion for the data sample, with differences in the distribution of CRISK among countries, sub-industries and individual financial institutions, and a significant upward trend in aggregate CRISK values throughout the observation period. In addition, the mean aggregate marginal CRISK, representing the difference in CRISK compared with a non-stressed scenario, is EUR 40,42 billion. Este estudo trata do impacto do risco de transição decorrente do risco sistémico do sector financeiro na Zona do euro, onde é estimado um défice de capital esperado de 237 instituições financeiras cotadas na Zona do euro, condicionado a um cenário de estresse climático, com foco nas tendências e nos padrões de concentração. O défice de capital é estimado utilizando uma metodologia de teste de estresse climático top-down baseada no mercado, introduzida por Jung et al. (2023), estimando primeiro os Betas Climáticos variáveis no tempo para cada instituição financeira através de uma regressão contínua dos retornos das acções da empresa sobre os retornos de uma Carteira de Activos Desconhecidos, que é construída para servir de proxy para o risco de transição. Em seguida, é estimada a variável CRISK, que representa o défice de capital esperado de cada instituição financeira num cenário de stress, representado por uma descida de 50% no retorno da carteira de activos não recuperáveis durante um período de seis meses. A vantagem desta metodologia é a previsão do risco climático de forma dinâmica, abordando assim a sua natureza variável no tempo. Além disso, requer apenas dados publicamente disponíveis e baseia-se em pressupostos mínimos (Jung et al., 2023). Os resultados da análise revelam um CRISK médio agregado positivo de 594,39 mil milhões de euros para a amostra de dados. Além disso, a CRISK marginal média agregada, que representa a diferença na CRISK em comparação com um cenário sem stress, é de 40,42 mil milhões de euros.

    O presente capítulo pretende apresentar o regime jurídico dasalterações climáticas, sabendo-se que este tópico pressupõe necessariamente acentralidade do Direito Internacional, mas não dispensa o recurso ao Direitoda União Europeia e ao Direito nacional. Para o efeito, procura-se dar umabreve visão sobre a ciência das alterações climáticas para, de seguida, se exporaspetos de regime jurídico das alterações climáticas (designadamente, os seusprincípios estruturantes, o dever de mitigação, os instrumentos para a mitigação,as políticas de adaptação e a possibilidade de responsabilidade dos Estados). Porfim, também se aborda a interação de regimes entre as alterações climáticas e osdireitos humanos, por um lado, e o Direito do Mar, por outro lado. This chapter aims at presenting the legal regime on climate change, having in mind that this topic necessarily presupposes a pivotal function of International Law, but also resorts to the European Union Law and domestic law. To that end, this chapter aims providing a brief overview on the science behind climate change, so that one can better explain some legal implications under the legal regime on climate change (namely, its fundamental principles,the duty of mitigation, the legal instruments for mitigation, the adaptation policies and the avenues for States’ international responsibility or liability). Finally, this chapter considers the interaction between climate change law and human rights law, on the one hand, and the Law of the Sea, on the other hand. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

    This dissertation investigates the influence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices on the brand reputation of luxury brands. The study aims to understand the significance of ESG dimensions in shaping consumer perceptions and their purchasing decisions within the luxury market. The research employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including interviews and surveys, to gather comprehensive insights from various demographic groups. The results reveal a positive correlation between ESG practices and brand reputation, with specific ESG dimensions such as Workplace and Environment holding substantial importance. However, traditional non-ESG dimensions like Products and Services remain the most critical factors for consumers when evaluating luxury brands. The findings indicate that while ESG practices enhance brand reputation, especially among younger and older demographics, non-ESG factors are still paramount in driving consumer preferences. Additionally, the study highlights the demographic variations in the perception of ESG practices. Older consumers, particularly those aged 45-54 and over 65, demonstrate a higher sensitivity to ESG factors and are more likely to adjust their purchasing behaviors based on these practices. Gender differences are also notable, with females placing greater emphasis on ESG dimensions compared to males. The dissertation concludes that luxury brands should maintain a balanced approach by prioritizing non-ESG attributes such as high-quality products and services while integrating robust ESG practices to appeal to socially conscious consumers. This strategy will not only strengthen brand loyalty but also attract a broader customer base, ensuring sustainable growth in the competitive luxury market. Esta dissertação investiga a influência das práticas ambientais, sociais e de governação (ESG) na reputação das marcas de luxo. O objetivo é compreender a importância das dimensões ESG na formação das percepções dos consumidores e nas suas decisões de compra no mercado de luxo. A investigação utiliza metodologias qualitativas e quantitativas, incluindo entrevistas e inquéritos, para recolher informações de vários grupos demográficos. Os resultados mostram uma correlação positiva entre as práticas ESG e a reputação da marca, com dimensões específicas, como o local de trabalho e o ambiente, tendo uma importância substancial. Contudo, dimensões tradicionais não ESG, como Produtos e Serviços, continuam a ser os fatores mais críticos para os consumidores ao avaliar marcas de luxo. Os resultados indicam que, embora as práticas ESG melhorem a reputação da marca, especialmente entre os mais jovens e os mais velhos, os fatores não ESG continuam a ser primordiais nas preferências dos consumidores. Além disso, o estudo destaca variações demográficas na perceção das práticas ESG. Consumidores mais velhos, particularmente entre 45-54 e acima de 65 anos, demonstram maior sensibilidade aos fatores ESG e são mais propensos a ajustar os seus comportamentos de compra com base nestas práticas. As diferenças de género também são notáveis, com as mulheres dando maior ênfase às dimensões ESG em comparação com os homens. A dissertação conclui que as marcas de luxo devem manter uma abordagem equilibrada, priorizando atributos não ESG, como produtos e serviços de alta qualidade, enquanto integram práticas ESG robustas. Esta estratégia reforçará a lealdade à marca e atrairá uma base de clientes mais ampla, garantindo crescimento sustentável no competitivo mercado do luxo.

    AbstractIn the era of climate change, decisive action is needed from States. However, it is dismaying to see the lack of ambitious efforts in climate treaty negotiations, which is reflected downstream in the ambiguous nature of non-binding or soft mitigation obligations. In that light, this article argues that courts can be agents of change and pressure States,cum grano salis, to take decisive action. Domestic courts may be better positioned to compel States to adopt stringent mitigation measures, but all courts (international or domestic, general or specialised) maypress for regulationorassess regulation. In both cases, courts are helpful in mapping States’ obligations under international law (including, but not exclusively, the UNFCCC legal framework).

    Authors: Fernandes, Valentina Sofia de Ornelas Gouveia;

    With the growth of the luxury industry in recent years, especially the personal goods segment, and with environmental concerns and sustainability increasingly influencing consumers, it is crucial to understand the role of this industry in the spotlight of sustainability. For this reason, this investigation aims to understand what perceptions, feelings, and purchase intentions current and potential consumers will have about these sustainable luxury products. To do this, based on the literature, information was gathered from individuals by (1) developing a questionnaire to assess consumers’ perceptions and attitudes towards different sustainable strategies, and (2) conduction interviews to deepen the knowledge regarding consumer’s emotions regarding sustainable luxury products. This way, it was possible to assess people's perspectives and understanding of the new sustainable production methods that have been implemented. The results of this investigation reveal that, in general, individuals are considerably concerned about the current state of the environment and that despite their positive purchase intentions for this type of sustainable goods, perceptions about them are not unanimous and deserve further look. Thus, this study provides relevant academic and managerial contributions, as it indicates which sustainable strategies are most familiar to individuals, how they judge and evaluate them, and which of them generates higher purchase intentions, granting a deeper knowledge about the potential consumers in this market segment. Com o crescimento da indústria do luxo nos últimos anos, especialmente no segmento de bens pessoais, e com a sustentabilidade e preocupações ambientais a influenciarem cada vez mais os consumidores, torna-se crucial compreender o papel desta indústria num mundo que caminha para um futuro que se pretende cada vez mais sustentável. Por esta razão, esta investigação visa compreender que perceções, sentimentos e intenções de compra terão os consumidores atuais e potenciais sobre estes produtos de luxo sustentáveis. Para tal, com base na literatura, foram recolhidas informações junto de indivíduos por meio de (1) desenvolvimento de um questionário para avaliar as perceções e atitudes dos consumidores em relação a diferentes estratégias sustentáveis e (2) realização de entrevistas para aprofundar as emoções dos mesmos em relação aos produtos de luxo sustentáveis. Desta forma, foi possível avaliar a perspetiva e compreensão das pessoassobre os novos métodos de produção sustentável que têm vindo a ser implementados. Os resultados desta investigação revelam que, de uma forma geral, os indivíduos estão bastante preocupados com o estado atual do ambiente e que apesar das intenções de compra perante este tipo de bens ser positiva, as perceções sobre os mesmos não são unânimes e merecem ser aprofundadas. Assim, este estudo fornece contributos académicos relevantes para a gestão, visto que indica quais estratégias sustentáveis são mais familiares aos indivíduos, como estes as avaliam e quais geram maiores intenções de compra, proporcionando um conhecimento mais profundo sobre os potenciais consumidores deste segmento de mercado.

    Exposure to an atmosphere rich in volatile pollutants can endanger collections in museums, galleries, libraries or archives. Monitoring volatile pollutants in museum microclimates remains an unusual practice in most institutions. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be released by many sources, including the artefacts’ materials themselves. The presence of pollutants in an enclosed space with poor ventilation, adding to high temperature and relative humidity levels or significant fluctuations, may increase the risk of damage for the more susceptible materials. The tendency observed in museums to enclose artefacts in vitrines or boxes may contribute to the formation of microclimates with high VOCs concentration. Based on the studies developed in the last decades, this work intends to draw attention to the risks associated with gaseous pollutants in museum environment and outline some recommendations that encourage cultural heritage institutions to implement a pollutant monitoring plan associated with risk prevention.

    More-than-human beings are largely de-animated in Western cultures and perceived of as the backdrop for human activities. In particular, with modern modes of production and consumption, customers often have no idea how specific products have been created and which more-than-human beings have been involved in manufacturing specific consumables. As a partial response to this problematic disconnect, this text presents the art book, Yeasts as We Do Not Know Them, as a means to learn about human-yeast interactions and the ways these fungal microbes are used to manufacture different products and substances. The book, therefore, (re)imagines yeasts as omnipresent, diverse, and symbiotic. Conceiving of symbiosis as a set of interspecies relations, including mutualistic, pathogenic, and commensal ones, the project, Yeasts as We Do Not Know Them, as this article argues, maps diverse interspecies interactions and, by doing so, provides recourse for navigating material systems, thereby invoking trans-corporeal ethics.

    The new decade brings increasing concerns over climate change. Road transport is one of the largest contributors to emissions of greenhouse gases and apprehension is growing as to how the industry can reduces its carbon footprint. One solution is vehicles powered by electric motors. Electric cars, although becoming more popular are still regarded by many motorists as inadequate to meet their needs, while research has been conducted on the perceptions of electric cars there is less research on how they could be marketed to consumers. In the 2030 Ireland will ban new sales of petrol/diesel cars. This thesis aims to study an Irish online community of motorists to understand their views and motivations about electric cars and how these can help improve communication and facilitate adoption. Netnography was considered the most appropriate method of research. Results show that performance is the main consideration of the community, while four sub-themes linked to performance are also observed being sustainability, sentiment, price and self-image. Findings show that although sustainability is a concern for buyers performance attributes are more important in the buying consideration and that many consumers would not be willing to pay a premium for going green. Research suggests that the main focus should be on amplifying the performance qualities of the electric car rather than just emphasising the sustainable attributes. While a substantial section of consumers are unwilling to pay a premium for an electric car which is perceived as performing poorly. A nova década traz preocupações crescentes com as alterações climáticas. O transporte rodoviário é um dos maiores contribuidores de emissões de gases de efeito estufa e a apreensão sobre como a indústria poderá reduzir a sua pegada de carbono cresceu. Uma solução são os veículos movidos por motores elétricos. Os carros elétricos, embora mais populares, ainda são considerados por muitos motoristas como inadequados às suas necessidades. A pesquisa que tem sido conduzida foca-se na perceção dos carros elétricos, e não em como comercializá-los aos consumidores. Em 2030, a Irlanda vai proibir novas vendas de carros a gasolina/diesel. Esta tese visa estudar uma comunidade irlandesa online de automobilistas para entender suas opiniões e motivações sobre carros elétricos e como estas podem ajudar a melhorar a comunicação e adoção. A netnografia foi considerada o método de pesquisa mais apropriado. Os resultados mostram que o desempenho é a principal consideração da comunidade, enquanto quatro subtemas ligados ao desempenho também são observados sendo sustentabilidade, emoções, preço e autoimagem. Os resultados mostram que, embora a sustentabilidade seja uma preocupação, o desempenho é mais importante no processo de compra e que muitos consumidores não estariam dispostos a pagar um prémio por se tornarem verdes. A pesquisa sugere que o foco deve estar na amplificação das qualidades de desempenho do carro elétrico, em vez de apenas destacar os atributos sustentáveis. Uma parte significativa dos consumidores não está disposta a pagar um prémio por um carro elétrico, uma vez que este é percebido como tendo um mau desempenho.

    Authors: Erdmann, Johann Georg;

    Corporate social responsibility has gained importance in the past decades and more and more laws and regulations have come into place. The German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act is the newest and most far-reaching of its kind and will come into force in 2023. The Act aims to improve human rights and address environmental protection along supply chains. This thesis was written to identify first insights of how affected companies are preparing to meet requirements of the Act. In a further step, a policy brief was developed and presented to a member of one of the Federal Ministries responsible for the Act. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts of different industrial companies as well as with experts from consulting and law firms. These interviews revealed the main challenges affected companies face but also showed what opportunities the Act can provide. The study showed that transparency is a main theme around which many elements of the Act are centered. Creating transparency in supply chains is also one of the most difficult tasks as companies can have a very high number of suppliers and obtaining required information can turn out to be a challenge. Critique was expressed regarding the Act being vague in many areas and not being strict enough in addressing certain topics. Overall, the Act meets its intended goals as it is an important step towards improving the human rights of millions of workers around the world as well as addressing environmental concerns. A resposabilidade social corporativa tem ganhado importância nas últimas décadas e cada vez mais leis e regulamentos entram em vigor. A Lei Alemã de Diligência na Cadeia Logística é a mais recente e abrangente de todas, e entrará em ação em 2023. Esta Lei tem como objetivos melhorar os direitos humanos e abordar a proteção ambiental ao longo das cadeias logísticas. Esta dissertação foi escrita de forma a identificar as primeiras percepções das empresas impactadas e como estas se estão a preparar para cumprir os novos requisitos. Subsequentemente, um resumo político foi desenvolvido e apresentado a um dos membros do Ministério Federal responsável pela Lei. Entrevistas semiestruturadas foram conduzidas com especialistas de variadas empresas industriais, de consultoria e sociedades advogadas. As entrevistas revelaram os principais desafios encontrados pelas empresas afetadas, mas também demonstraram as oportunidades que a Lei pode vir a apresentar. O estudo revela que a transparência é o tema principal em torno do qual muitos elementos da Lei estão centrados. A criação de transparência nas cadeias logísticas é um dos desafios mais difíceis pois as empresas podem ter um número elevado de fornecedores e obter a informação requerida pode ser desafiante. Críticas à Lei foram expressas por ser demasiado vaga em variadas áreas e não ser estrita o suficiente na abordagem de certos tópicos. Em geral, a Lei cumpre os objetivos pretendidos pois representa um passo importante em direção à melhoria dos direitos humanos de milhões de colaboradores no mundo inteiro, bem como na abordagem às preocupações ambientais.
