Vivi Nur Wijayaningrum in OpenAIRESome aquatic ecosystems in rivers depend on the river water, so it needs to be maintained by measuring and analyzing the river water quality. STORET is one of the methods used to measure the river water quality, but it takes a quite high of time and costs. Fuzzy Tsukamoto is an alternative method that works by grouping the river water data, but it is difficult to determine the membership function value. The solution offered in this study is the use of genetic algorithm to determine the membership function value of each criterion. Based on the test results, the optimization of fuzzy membership function using genetic algorithm provides higher accuracy value that is 95%, while the accuracy value without optimization process is 90%. The parameters used in genetic algorithm are as follows: population size is 80, generation number is 175, crossover rate (<em>cr</em>) is 0.6, and mutation rate (<em>mr</em>) is 0.4.

Boublík, Karel in OpenAIREOpen forests are among the world’s most species-rich ecosystems but these are now suffering from strong environmental pressure. With the increasing frequency of drought events accompanying climate change, open forests are now at high risk of canopy openness, an associated increase in nutrient load, and a consequent reordering of the plant community. Based on an 11-year field manipulative experiment, we examined whether the reintroduction of traditional forest uses, in particular the regular removal of litter which has been practiced for many centuries in Europe, may mitigate eutrophication and protect the ancient plant diversity of open forests. We examined vascular plant composition in 64, 3 × 3 m plots in 32 randomized blocks, each consisted of one litter-removal and one control plot in a subcontinental thermophilous oak forest dominated by Quercus petraea (Czech Republic, Central Europe). We analyzed how regular litter removal influenced the changes in topsoil nutrients and diversity and abundances of perennial, short-lived monocarpic and open oak forest plant species after eleven years of the annual application of this management. The regular litter removal significantly mitigated eutrophication by a reducing total nitrogen, and significantly decreased the amounts of base cations Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the topsoil. The studied plant species groups responded differently. Perennial and open oak forest species significantly increased their richness and abundances in the litter-removal plots and at the same time their diversity did not change significantly depending on inter-annual weather conditions. In contrast, litter removal negatively affected abundances of short-lived monocarpic species, whose richness was also considerably influenced by weather conditions (decreased the most in years with spring droughts). Moreover, we have found a protective effect of regular litter removal on drought-sensitive open oak forest species that survived in the litter-removal plots, whereas some completely disappeared from control sites during the period of repeated drought events. Our study thus demonstrates that litter removal is a tool with high potential in maintaining biodiversity in open forests affected by climate change.

For attaining this objective, the research community is turning to the networks of the future involving initiatives such as the Next Generation Internet (NGI) in Europe and Tomorrow’s Internet Project in the United States, in addition to several other actions such as the next generation of mobile telecommunications networks for 2030, 6G. In Brazil, projects such as FIBRE [1], FIWARE [2], FUTEBOL [3], 5GINFIRE[2], NECOS [4], CloudNEXT, and SFI2 [5] [6], carried out in collaborations between Europe and Brazil, create conditions to experiment with different scenarios of networks and applications with a focus on the future. This SFI2 Workshop aims to discuss, exchange research ideas and propose directions and solutions toward the utilization of network slicing (NS) as a new paradigm capable to support future Internet evolution. SFI2 will focus on experimental network integration as a guidance direction for these discussions and proposals.

Eme, David in OpenAIREEnergy and environmental stability are positively correlated with species richness along broad-scale spatial gradients in terrestrial ecosystems, so their relative importance in generating and preserving diversity cannot be readily disentangled. This study seeks to exploit the negative correlation between energy and stability along the oceanic depth gradient to better understand their relative contribution in shaping broadscale biodiversity patterns. We develop a conceptual framework by simulating speciation and extinction along energy and stability gradients to generate expected patterns of biodiversity for a suite of complementary phylogenetic diversity metrics. Using a time-calibrated molecular phylogeny for New Zealand marine ray-finned fishes and a replicated community ecological sampling design, we then modelled these metrics along large-scale depth and latitude gradients. Our results indicate that energy-rich shallow waters may be an engine of diversity for percomorphs, but also suggest that recent speciation occurs in ancient fish lineages in the deep sea, hence questioning the role of energy as a key driver of speciation. Despite potentially facing high extinction early in their evolution, ancient phylogenetic lineages specialized for the deep-sea were likely preserved by environmental stability during the Cenozoic. Furthermore, intermediate depths might be a “museum” (or zone of overlap) for distinct lineages that occur predominantly in either shallow or deep-sea waters. These intermediate depths (500-900m) may form a “phylogenetic diversity bank”, perhaps providing a refuge during ancient (Mesozoic) extreme anoxic events affecting the deep sea and more recent (Pliocene-Pleistocene) climatic events occurring in shallow ecosystems. Finally, the phylogenetic structures observed in fish communities at intermediate depths suggest other processes might restrict the co-occurrence of closely related species. Overall, by combining a conceptual framework with models of empirical phylogenetic diversity patterns, our study paves the way for understanding the determinants of biodiversity across the largest habitat on earth.

Schiebelhut, Lauren in OpenAIREWildlife diseases, such as the sea star wasting (SSW) epizootic that outbroke in the mid-2010s, appear to be associated with acute and/or chronic abiotic environmental change; dissociating the effects of different drivers can be difficult. The sunflower sea star, Pycnopodia helianthoides, was the species most severely impacted during the SSW outbreak, which overlapped with periods of anomalous atmospheric and oceanographic conditions, and there is not yet a consensus on the cause(s). Genomic data may reveal underlying molecular signatures that implicate a subset of factors and, thus, clarify past events while also setting the scene for effective restoration efforts. To advance this goal, we used Pacific Biosciences HiFi long sequencing reads and Dovetail Omni-C proximity reads to generate a highly contiguous genome assembly that was then annotated using RNA-seq-informed gene prediction. The genome assembly is 484 Mb long, with contig N50 of 1.9 Mb, scaffold N50 of 21.8 Mb, BUSCO completeness score 96.1%, and 22 major scaffolds consistent with prior evidence that sea star genomes comprise 22 autosomes. These statistics generally fall between those of other recently assembled chromosome-scale assemblies for two species in the distantly related asteroid genus Pisaster. These novel genomic resources for Pycnopodia helianthoides will underwrite population genomic, comparative genomic, and phylogenomic analyses — as well as their integration across scales — of SSW and environmental stressors. A distinction is made between the plant benthos or phytobenthos (algae and phanerogams), and the animal benthos or zoobenthos (annelids, molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms, fish, etc.). Furthermore, the fauna situated on the surface (or epifauna), which may be fixed or free, is different from that which lives inside the sediment (endofauna). Finally, in this section we are interested only in marine macrobenthos (organisms larger than a few mm), from the tidal zone to the abyssal depths. The smaller forms (meiofauna-flora and microfauna-flora), which are practically not documented, are not taken into account in this chapter on the bottoms of the St-Paul and Amsterdam Islands. The area has been explored only sporadically during the passage of a few vessels on scientific expeditions focused on other interests. Only one of them, dedicated to the exploration of the zone from 0 to 3000 m of depth ("Jasus"), took place in 1985, on board the Marion-Dufresne. The purpose of this chapter is to make an assessment of the situation in 2022, in the context of a fishing zone within a marine protected area. {"references": ["F\u00e9ral (J.-P.) 2023. AbstractGlobally, lake fish communities are being subjected to a range of scale‐dependent anthropogenic pressures, from climate change to eutrophication, and from overexploitation to species introductions. As a consequence, the composition of these communities is being reshuffled, in most cases leading to a surge in taxonomic similarity at the regional scale termed homogenization. The drivers of homogenization remain unclear, which may be a reflection of interactions between various environmental changes. In this study, we investigate two potential drivers of the recent changes in the composition of freshwater fish communities: recreational fishing and climate change. Our results, derived from 524 lakes of Ontario, Canada sampled in two periods (1965–1982 and 2008–2012), demonstrate that the main contributors to homogenization are the dispersal of gamefish species, most of which are large predators. Alternative explanations relating to lake habitat (e.g., area, phosphorus) or variations in climate have limited explanatory power. Our analysis suggests that human‐assisted migration is the primary driver of the observed compositional shifts, homogenizing freshwater fish community among Ontario lakes and generating food webs dominated by gamefish species.

In 23 of them, seven species of Unionidae were recorded: U. pictorum, U. tumidus, U. crassus sensu lato, A. anatina, A. cygnea, P. сomplanatа and S. woodiana, which is an invasive species. Th e index of occurrence of freshwater mussels in general was 100 % in the Lower Danube River (5 study areas), 42 % in Tisa River (31 study areas), 33.3 % in Seret River (3 study areas), 36 % in Prut River (11 study areas). Th e index of occurrence of species was rather low: 24 % of A. anatina, 22 % of U. tumidus, 22 % of U. crassus, 16 % of U. pictorum, 14 % of P. complanata, 14 % of S. woodiana, and 2 % of A. cygnea. U. crassus was not found in the Lower Danube river, while A. cygnea was found only there outside the main watercourse. Th e invasive species S. woodiana occurred in the Lower Danube River and in the sub-basin of Tisa River (with 83 % and 20 % frequency, respectively. Th e mean values of population densities ranged from 1.00 (A. cygnea) to 6.14 ind./m2 (S. woodiana), and the mean biomass varied from 1.14 (P. сomplanatа) to 797.54 g/m2 (S. woodiana).
