    Esta dissertação examina como diferentes tipos de vestuário de moda (convencional, sustentável) afetam o comportamento de compra dos consumidores (intenção de compra do produto, disposição de pagar e perceção de qualidade). Além disso, investiga o efeito da influência social nos processos de tomada de decisão dos consumidores em relação à moda sustentável. Adicionalmente, o aspeto da consciência ambiental é analisado para entender o mecanismo indireto pelo qual o tipo de vestuário de moda influencia o comportamento de compra dos consumidores. Os resultados mostram que os consumidores exibem comportamentos de compra favoráveis em relação à moda sustentável em comparação com a moda convencional, demonstrando uma intenção superior de comprar moda sustentável, uma maior disposição para pagar mais por moda sustentável e uma perceção superior da qualidade da moda sustentável. Os resultados também mostram que a influência social afeta significativamente e de maneira positiva os comportamentos dos consumidores associados à moda sustentável, especialmente em níveis elevados. No entanto, embora a análise sugira que existe uma relação direta entre o tipo de vestuário de moda e o comportamento de compra dos consumidores, a preocupação ambiental não explica indiretamente essa relação mais aprofundadamente. No geral, os resultados fornecem implicações teóricas e práticas relevantes, contribuindo para a literatura sobre moda sustentável ao oferecer um entendimento mais detalhado sobre a adoção da moda sustentável. This dissertation examines how different types of fashion clothing (conventional, sustainable) impact consumers’ purchase behavior (product purchase intention, willingness to pay, and perceived quality). In addition, it examines the moderating role of social influence on consumers' decision-making processes in the context of sustainable fashion. Furthermore, the mediating role of environmental concern is analyzed to understand the indirect mechanism by which the type of fashion clothing influences consumers' purchase behavior. Findings show that consumers display favorable purchasing behaviors towards sustainable fashion compared to conventional fashion, showing a higher intention to buy sustainable fashion, a higher willingness to pay more for sustainable fashion, and a superior quality perception of sustainable fashion. Results also show that social influence significantly moderates the positive consumer behaviors associated with sustainable fashion, especially at high levels. However, while the analysis suggests that a significant direct relationship exists between the type of fashion clothing and consumers' purchasing behavior, environmental concern does not indirectly explain this relationship further. Altogether, the findings yield relevant theoretical and practical implications, contributing to the literature on sustainable fashion by providing a more nuanced understanding of how sustainable fashion adoption occurs.

    Authors: Mérian, Sarah;

    Esta investigação examina a complexa interação entre a alavancagem financeira, as emissões de CO2 e o desempenho de empresas apoiadas por capital de risco, investigando a sua influência nas métricas financeiras e nas avaliações do mercado de ações durante 3 períodos consecutivos com um ano de defasagem. Centrando-se em entidades apoiadas por capital de risco, o estudo examina a relação entre elevada alavancagem financeira e indicadores de desempenho financeiro mais baixos, como ROE, ROA e Q de Tobin. Simultaneamente, explora as repercussões de menores emissões de CO2 no desempenho financeiro destas empresas, com o objectivo de descobrir correlações positivas entre as emissões de CO2 e os indicadores financeiros. A metodologia utiliza análise de dados em painel integrando conjuntos de dados da Thomson VentureXpert, Compustat via WRDS e bancos de dados Refinitiv Eikon. O conjunto de dados inclui 326 empresas apoiadas por capital de risco dos EUA de 2002 a 2022, abrangendo desempenho financeiro, emissões de CO2 e variáveis de controle para uma avaliação abrangente. As conclusões do estudo indicam que uma maior alavancagem financeira afeta inicialmente negativamente o ROA e o ROE, com o Q de Tobin mostrando impacto limitado. Em contraste, emissões mais baixas de CO2 correlacionam-se consistentemente com ROE, ROA e Q de Tobin mais elevados em todos os períodos, embora o efeito sobre o ROE varie ao longo do tempo. Este estudo destaca as relações complexas que moldam a dinâmica financeira entre empresas apoiadas por capital de risco. This research examines the complex interplay between financial leverage, CO2 emissions and the performance, of venture capital-backed companies, investigating their influence on financial metrics and stock market valuations over 3 consecutive one-year-lagged periods. Focusing on venture capital-backed entities, the study examines the relationship between high financial leverage and lower financial performance indicators such as ROE, ROA and Tobin's Q. Simultaneously, it explores the repercussions of lower CO2 emissions on the financial performance of these companies, with the aim of discovering positive correlations between CO2 emissions and financial indicators. The methodology uses panel data analysis integrating datasets from Thomson VentureXpert, Compustat via WRDS and Refinitiv Eikon databases. The dataset includes 326 US venture backed companies from 2002 to 2022, encompassing financial performance, CO2 emissions, and control variables for a comprehensive assessment. The study findings indicate that higher financial leverage negatively affects ROA and ROE initially, with Tobin's Q showing limited impact. In contrast, lower CO2 emissions consistently correlate with higher ROE, ROA, and Tobin's Q across all periods, although the effect on ROE varies over time. This study highlights the complex relationships that shape financial dynamics among venture capital-backed companies.

    Authors: Opphard, Yannic;

    A aviação global contribui significativamente para a mudança climática, representando cerca de 2,5% das emissões globais. Os Combustíveis de Aviação Sustentáveis (SAF) oferecem uma alternativa promissora, emitindo até 80% menos CO2 do que o combustível de aviação convencional. No entanto, espera-se que os preços do SAF superem os preços do querosene fóssil, levando a aumentos de custos para os passageiros. Esta tese estuda como a introdução do SAF influencia os principais fatores de comportamento do cliente na indústria da aviação no mercado europeu e se os incentivos podem efetivamente encorajar uma adoção maior. Uma análise de conteúdo qualitativa usando a metodologia de Gioia foi conduzida com base em 15 entrevistas semiestruturadas com especialistas da indústria da aviação, e foram derivadas descobertas-chave. Utilizando os insights coletados nas entrevistas com especialistas, foi realizada uma pesquisa com o público em geral, com 261 participantes. As entrevistas com especialistas confirmam a literatura existente sobre a importância do SAF e a necessidade de novas estratégias para engajar efetivamente os clientes durante a introdução no mercado. Os resultados da pesquisa demonstram que fatores como sensibilidade ambiental, consideração dos impactos ambientais na reserva, medidas de compensação anteriores, frequência de voos, sexo e idade (associada ao rendimento) influenciam positivamente a disponibilidade para pagar pelo SAF. Os resultados identificam elementos cruciais para alcançar um voo mais neutro em carbono com SAF do ponto de vista do cliente. Eles ilustram como os incentivos podem criar um cenário vantajoso para ambos, beneficiando tanto as companhias aéreas quanto os clientes. Global aviation significantly contributes to climate change, representing about 2.5% of global emissions. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) offer a promising alternative, emitting up to 80% less CO2 than conventional jet fuel. However, SAF prices are expected to surpass fossil kerosene prices, leading to cost increases for passengers. This thesis studies how the introduction of SAF influences key customer behavior factors within the aviation industry in the European market and whether incentives can effectively encourage greater adoption. A qualitative content analysis using Gioia’s methodology was conducted based on 15 semi-structured interviews with aviation industry experts, and key findings were derived. Utilizing the insights gathered from the expert interviews, a survey was carried out among the general public with 261 participants. The expert interviews confirm the extant literature regarding the significance of SAF and the need for new strategies to effectively engage customers during market ramp-up. The survey results demonstrate that key factors positively influence willingness to pay (WTP) for SAF. Factors include environmental awareness, consideration of environmental impacts when booking, previous compensation measures, frequency of flying, gender, and age (linked to income). Incentives can further increase WTP for SAF, most notably for seats with extra legroom and proportionally, most on short-haul flights. The results identify crucial elements for achieving more carbon-neutral flying with SAF from the customer's perspective. They illustrate how incentives can create a win-win scenario, benefiting both airlines and customers.

    Authors: Opphard, Yannic;

    A aviação global contribui significativamente para a mudança climática, representando cerca de 2,5% das emissões globais. Os Combustíveis de Aviação Sustentáveis (SAF) oferecem uma alternativa promissora, emitindo até 80% menos CO2 do que o combustível de aviação convencional. No entanto, espera-se que os preços do SAF superem os preços do querosene fóssil, levando a aumentos de custos para os passageiros. Esta tese estuda como a introdução do SAF influencia os principais fatores de comportamento do cliente na indústria da aviação no mercado europeu e se os incentivos podem efetivamente encorajar uma adoção maior. Uma análise de conteúdo qualitativa usando a metodologia de Gioia foi conduzida com base em 15 entrevistas semiestruturadas com especialistas da indústria da aviação, e foram derivadas descobertas-chave. Utilizando os insights coletados nas entrevistas com especialistas, foi realizada uma pesquisa com o público em geral, com 261 participantes. As entrevistas com especialistas confirmam a literatura existente sobre a importância do SAF e a necessidade de novas estratégias para engajar efetivamente os clientes durante a introdução no mercado. Os resultados da pesquisa demonstram que fatores como sensibilidade ambiental, consideração dos impactos ambientais na reserva, medidas de compensação anteriores, frequência de voos, sexo e idade (associada ao rendimento) influenciam positivamente a disponibilidade para pagar pelo SAF. Os resultados identificam elementos cruciais para alcançar um voo mais neutro em carbono com SAF do ponto de vista do cliente. Eles ilustram como os incentivos podem criar um cenário vantajoso para ambos, beneficiando tanto as companhias aéreas quanto os clientes. Global aviation significantly contributes to climate change, representing about 2.5% of global emissions. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) offer a promising alternative, emitting up to 80% less CO2 than conventional jet fuel. However, SAF prices are expected to surpass fossil kerosene prices, leading to cost increases for passengers. This thesis studies how the introduction of SAF influences key customer behavior factors within the aviation industry in the European market and whether incentives can effectively encourage greater adoption. A qualitative content analysis using Gioia’s methodology was conducted based on 15 semi-structured interviews with aviation industry experts, and key findings were derived. Utilizing the insights gathered from the expert interviews, a survey was carried out among the general public with 261 participants. The expert interviews confirm the extant literature regarding the significance of SAF and the need for new strategies to effectively engage customers during market ramp-up. The survey results demonstrate that key factors positively influence willingness to pay (WTP) for SAF. Factors include environmental awareness, consideration of environmental impacts when booking, previous compensation measures, frequency of flying, gender, and age (linked to income). Incentives can further increase WTP for SAF, most notably for seats with extra legroom and proportionally, most on short-haul flights. The results identify crucial elements for achieving more carbon-neutral flying with SAF from the customer's perspective. They illustrate how incentives can create a win-win scenario, benefiting both airlines and customers.

    A indústria automotiva encontra-se em um ponto crucial, enfrentando o desafio crítico de reduzir sua pegada ambiental. Esta dissertação examina o potencial transformador dos motores a amônia e dos combustíveis nanoeletro como soluções potenciais para alcançar um futuro sem carbono. Os motores a amônia oferecem um caminho revolucionário, reduzindo as emissões de CO₂ com mudanças mínimas na infraestrutura existente. Paralelamente, os NEFs representam uma abordagem inovadora para aprimorar a tecnologia de baterias, aproveitando a eletricidade renovável e proporcionando melhorias na entrega de energia, na vida útil das baterias e na eficiência geral. A pesquisa integra insights qualitativos de especialistas da indústria com dados quantitativos de uma pesquisa com profissionais do setor automotivo para avaliar o potencial de adoção, os benefícios e os obstáculos de ambas as tecnologias. Os resultados sugerem que, embora os motores a amônia e os NEFs tenham grande potencial para melhorar a sustentabilidade ambiental, sua adoção em larga escala atualmente é impedida por altos custos, desafios técnicos e o foco da indústria em veículos elétricos. A pressão regulatória e a capacidade da indústria de se adaptar a novas tecnologias são essenciais para superar esses obstáculos. Este estudo destaca a necessidade crucial de investimentos e esforços colaborativos para integrar essas tecnologias no mundo automotivo, impulsionando a indústria em direção a um futuro mais verde. The automotive industry is at a standpoint, faced with the critical challenge of reducing its environmental footprint. This dissertation examines the transformative potential of ammonia engines and nano-electro fuels as potential solutions to achieving a carbon-free future. Ammonia engines provide a revolutionary path, cutting CO₂ emissions with minimal change to current infrastructure. In parallel, NEFs are an innovative approach to tackle battery technology, leveraging on renewable electricity and offering improvements in power delivery, battery life, and overall efficiency. The research integrates qualitative insights from industry experts with quantitative data from a survey of automotive professionals to assess the adoption potential, benefits, and barriers of both of these technologies. The findings suggest that while ammonia engine and NEFs have great potential for improving environmental sustainability, their widespread adoption is currently impeded by high costs, technical challenges, and the industry’s focus on electric vehicles. Regulatory pressure and the industry’s ability to adapt to new technologies is essential for overcoming these barriers. This study highlights the crucial need for investments and collaborative efforts to integrate these technologies into the automotive world, driving the industry towards a greener future.

    A gestão dos resíduos de plástico representa uma questão de sustentabilidade muito debatida. Cerca de um terço dos resíduos de plástico pós-consumo são reciclados na UE, sendo os restantes divididos equitativamente entre a valorização energética e a deposição em aterro. Enquanto interveniente a montante na cadeia de valor dos plásticos industriais, a indústria química desempenha um papel fundamental na transição para uma economia circular. Em conjunto com os métodos de reciclagem convencionais, espera-se que um conjunto de novas tecnologias, sob a designação genérica de "reciclagem química", alargue o espetro de polímeros plásticos elegíveis para inclusão no ciclo de reciclagem. Ao aplicar uma metodologia de investigação qualitativa-empírica, envolvendo 17 entrevistas semi estruturadas, este estudo contribui para o discurso académico existente. Em primeiro lugar, explora as motivações subjacentes à participação na reciclagem química. Em segundo lugar, o estudo aborda os desafios e os factores de sucesso da implementação de modelos empresariais de reciclagem de produtos químicos, centrando-se no envolvimento das partes interessadas. As conclusões sublinham a importância do envolvimento das partes interessadas. Os contributos incluem a participação em plataformas multi-intervenientes, para facilitar a colaboração entre as partes interessadas, a fim de educar conjuntamente a sociedade sobre a reciclagem de produtos químicos para obter uma aceitação mais ampla, bem como práticas de envolvimento específicas das partes interessadas. Em última análise, o estudo contribui para colmatar a lacuna entre a investigação académica e a prática industrial, fornecendo informações sobre o complexo panorama da reciclagem química e do envolvimento das partes interessadas na indústria química europeia. The management of plastic waste represents a heavily discussed sustainability issue. About one third of post-consumer plastic waste is recycled in the EU, with the remainder split evenly between energy recovery and landfill. As an upstream player in the industrial plastics value chain, the chemical industry plays a key role in the transition to a circular economy through its research into recycling processes. In tandem with conventional recycling methods, a collection of new technologies under the umbrella term “chemical recycling” is expected to broaden the spectrum of plastic polymers eligible for inclusion in the recycling loop. By applying a qualitative-empirical research methodology, involving 17 semi-structured interviews, this study contributes to the existing scholarly discourse. First, it explores the motivations behind engaging in chemical recycling. Second, the study addresses the challenges and success factors of implementing chemical recycling business models (CRBMs), focusing on stakeholder-specific and cross-stakeholder engagement. The findings underscore the importance of stakeholder engagement in implementing and managing CRBMs, taking a closer look into relationships with policymakers, suppliers, customers, NGOs, and technology certification bodies. Theoretical and managerial contributions include participation in multi-stakeholder platforms such as associations to facilitate cross-stakeholder collaboration to jointly educate society on chemical recycling to gain broader acceptance as well as stakeholder-specific engagement practices. Ultimately, the study contributes to bridging the gap between academic research and industry practice, providing insights into the complex landscape of CR and stakeholder engagement in the European chemical industry.

    Authors: Mertens, Dina Jill Maya;

    Esta tese investiga o impacto da política climática nos investimentos de capital de risco (VC) em tecnologia verde, abordando uma lacuna significativa na investigação. Através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas com dez experientes investidores de capital de risco europeus, o estudo examina como as políticas climáticas influenciam suas decisões de investimento em várias dimensões de risco: mercado do produto, tecnologia, regulamentação, saída e risco pessoal. Os resultados indicam que a política climática é um fator de demanda crucial para as empresas de tecnologia verde, moldando significativamente a dimensão do mercado e as perspectivas de comercialização. Nas fases iniciais de I&D, o financiamento governamental através de instrumentos de incentivo à tecnologia, como subsídios, é visto de forma positiva, embora a elevada dependência nas fases posteriores suscite preocupações. O risco regulatório é apontado como o maior risco de investimento devido à incerteza quanto à duração e ao rigor das políticas, afetando tanto as fases iniciais de I&D quanto as de difusão no mercado. O risco pessoal é a única categoria que não é afetada pela política climática. O estudo revela que a estratégia de saída prevista para as empresas de tecnologia verde difere da das empresas de tecnologia não verde, uma vez que as aquisições estratégicas são preferidas às OPI. Em conclusão, os investidores em capital de risco reconhecem que a política climática pode catalisar oportunidades de investimento, embora a incerteza da continuidade da política continue a ser um fator de risco crítico. This thesis investigates the impact of climate policy on venture capital (VC) investments in greentech, addressing a significant research gap. By conducting semi-structured interviews with ten experienced European venture capitalists, the study examines how climate policies influence their investment decisions across various risk dimensions: product market, technology, regulatory, exit, and people risk. Findings indicate that climate policy is a crucial demand driver for greentech ventures, significantly shaping the market size and commercialization prospects. In early R&D stages, government funding through technology push instruments such as subsidies is positively viewed, though high dependency in later stages raises concerns. Regulatory risk is highlighted as the biggest investment risk due to the uncertainty of policy duration and stringency, impacting both early R&D and market diffusion stages. People risk is the only category not impacted by climate policy. The study reveals that the expected exit strategy for greentech ventures differs from that of non-greentech ventures as strategic acquisitions are preferred over IPOs. To conclude, venture capitalists acknowledge that climate policy can catalyze investment opportunities, while the uncertainty of policy continuity remains a critical risk factor.

    Authors: Mertens, Dina Jill Maya;

    Esta tese investiga o impacto da política climática nos investimentos de capital de risco (VC) em tecnologia verde, abordando uma lacuna significativa na investigação. Através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas com dez experientes investidores de capital de risco europeus, o estudo examina como as políticas climáticas influenciam suas decisões de investimento em várias dimensões de risco: mercado do produto, tecnologia, regulamentação, saída e risco pessoal. Os resultados indicam que a política climática é um fator de demanda crucial para as empresas de tecnologia verde, moldando significativamente a dimensão do mercado e as perspectivas de comercialização. Nas fases iniciais de I&D, o financiamento governamental através de instrumentos de incentivo à tecnologia, como subsídios, é visto de forma positiva, embora a elevada dependência nas fases posteriores suscite preocupações. O risco regulatório é apontado como o maior risco de investimento devido à incerteza quanto à duração e ao rigor das políticas, afetando tanto as fases iniciais de I&D quanto as de difusão no mercado. O risco pessoal é a única categoria que não é afetada pela política climática. O estudo revela que a estratégia de saída prevista para as empresas de tecnologia verde difere da das empresas de tecnologia não verde, uma vez que as aquisições estratégicas são preferidas às OPI. Em conclusão, os investidores em capital de risco reconhecem que a política climática pode catalisar oportunidades de investimento, embora a incerteza da continuidade da política continue a ser um fator de risco crítico. This thesis investigates the impact of climate policy on venture capital (VC) investments in greentech, addressing a significant research gap. By conducting semi-structured interviews with ten experienced European venture capitalists, the study examines how climate policies influence their investment decisions across various risk dimensions: product market, technology, regulatory, exit, and people risk. Findings indicate that climate policy is a crucial demand driver for greentech ventures, significantly shaping the market size and commercialization prospects. In early R&D stages, government funding through technology push instruments such as subsidies is positively viewed, though high dependency in later stages raises concerns. Regulatory risk is highlighted as the biggest investment risk due to the uncertainty of policy duration and stringency, impacting both early R&D and market diffusion stages. People risk is the only category not impacted by climate policy. The study reveals that the expected exit strategy for greentech ventures differs from that of non-greentech ventures as strategic acquisitions are preferred over IPOs. To conclude, venture capitalists acknowledge that climate policy can catalyze investment opportunities, while the uncertainty of policy continuity remains a critical risk factor.

    Authors: Santos, Joana Filipa Récio Francela;

    Atualmente, os canais digitais ocupam um lugar basilar na vida das marcas e dos consumidores, sendo que a partir deles é possível estabelecer relações de maior proximidade. Devido a este novo paradigma, os consumidores, especialmente os mais novos, são mais exigentes e assumem um papel ativo e consciente nas redes socais. As ações de marketing e de comunicação digital, realizadas pelas empresas, tornaram-se cada vez menos eficientes, o que os leva a procurar novas estratégias e abordagens. Neste sentido, outras áreas como a gamification, que atua nas necessidades intrínsecas dos consumidores, têm vindo a desenvolver-se e a inserir-se não só como uma nova ferramenta de negócio, como também de apoio a questões sociais, nomeadamente no território da sustentabilidade. Quando aplicada ao contexto de festivais música, a gamification poderá incentivar adoção de comportamentos sustentáveis durante o evento, mas também aumentar a consciencialização e promover uma cultura de sustentabilidade que se pode estender para além do recinto do festival. Ao tornar a sustentabilidade divertida e interativa, a gamification pode ser uma estratégia eficiente na promoção da consciência ambiental entre os festivaleiros e nas suas relações com as entidades organizadoras. Assim, este projeto centrou-se num festival em particular - o MEO Sudoeste. Com a criação de um protótipo - plataforma digital gamificada - direcionada à Geração Z, e através de um procedimento metodológico de natureza qualitativa mediado por dois focus groups, foi possível levantar apreciações sobre a praticabilidade do projeto (no que diz respeito à promoção de práticas mais sustentáveis em festivais de música) e confirmar a predisposição dos grupos em se envolverem com a experiência criada. Nowadays, digital channels play a fundamental role in brands and customers lives, as they allow for closer relationships to be established. Due to this new paradigm, consumers, particularly the younger generation, are becoming more demanding and while taking an active and conscious role on social networks. The marketing actions and digital communication carried out by companies have become increasingly less efficient, leading them to seek new strategies and approaches. In this context, other areas such as gamification, which address consumer’s intrinsic need, have been developing and integrating themselves a new business tool. However, it also acts as a support of social issues, particularly in the realm of sustainability. When applied in the context of music festivals, gamification can promote the adoption of sustainable behaviours during the event and as well as increase awareness. It can promote a culture of sustainability that extends beyond the festival grounds. By making sustainability fun and interactive, gamification can be an efficient strategy in promoting environmental awareness among festival-goers and in their relationships with the organization. Therefore, this project is focused on a specific festival - MEO Sudoeste. Through the creation of a prototype - a gamified digital platform - targeted at Generation Z, and by following a qualitative methodological procedure mediated by two focus groups, a set of conclusions were made to assets the feasibility of the project. This included promoting more sustainable practices at music festivals and confirming the willingness of these groups to engage with the created experience.

    No cenário de combate aos riscos das alterações climáticas, a criação de tecnologias disruptivas, através da investigação e desenvolvimento, adquire um papel fundamental para contrariar os efeitos catastróficos que a comunidade científica prevê. Este artigo tem como objetivo compreender se e como os investidores empresariais reagem aos diferentes tipos de exposição a riscos e oportunidades associados às alterações climáticas, através da produção interna de patentes verdes. A amostra é constituída por 87 empresas de capital de risco dos EUA, com informação de 2001 a 2022. Os resultados mostram que estes actores reagem efetivamente à exposição geral das alterações climáticas através de pedidos de patentes verdes. O efeito é ainda mais forte quando as alterações climáticas criam oportunidades de negócio para estas empresas. Por outro lado, verifica-se um efeito oposto no número de pedidos de patentes não ecológicas. Além disso, a análise efectuada através da exposição física às alterações climáticas permite-nos captar um resultado peculiar. Quando se trata de lidar com o risco a curto prazo, o processo interno de criação de conhecimento passa para segundo plano, favorecendo provavelmente os investimentos em empresas tecnologicamente avançadas em fase de arranque. Os resultados deste documento mostram como estas empresas podem ser um ator importante na luta contra as consequências das alterações climáticas, fornecendo inovações ecológicas necessárias para reduzir a nossa pegada de carbono. In the scenario of combating climate change risks, the creation of disruptive technologies, through research and development, acquires a key role in contrasting the catastrophic effects predicted by the scientific community. This paper aims to understand whether and how corporate investors react to different types of climate change risk and opportunity exposure, through the in-house production of green patents. The sample consists of 87 U.S. corporate venture capital firms, with information spanning from 2001 to 2022. The results show that these players do react to general climate change exposure via green patent applications. The effect is even more powerful when climate change creates business opportunities for these companies. Conversely, an opposite effect is found on the number of non-green patent applications. Moreover, the analysis conducted using physical climate change exposure, allows us to capture a peculiar result. When it comes to dealing with short-term risk, the internal knowledge creation process takes a back seat, probably favouring investments in technologically advanced start-ups. The results of this paper, show how these firms can be an important player in the long-term battle against the consequences of climate change, providing eco-innovations necessary to lower our carbon footprint.

    Enquadrar mensagens de modo a aumentar a sua eficácia é uma "arte" crucial no mundo atual, onde o meio informativo está muitas vezes sobrecarregado, sendo cada vez mais difícil "captar" a atenção dos indivíduos e motivá-los a agir. Este é frequentemente o caso da comunicação sobre as alterações climáticas. Assim, esta investigação teve como objetivo analisar de que forma o enquadramento da comunicação como uma crise ou emergência climática pode reduzir ou aumentar a probabilidade de os indivíduos evitarem informações relacionadas ou adotarem comportamentos sustentáveis, como estratégia de adaptação às alterações climáticas. Para além disso, foi também estudado o papel da eco-ansiedade como moderador dessa relação, nomeadamente como motivador do evitamento de informação defensiva. Para o efeito, foi implementado um método quantitativo com um desenho experimental com 215 participantes. Contrariamente às expectativas iniciais, globalmente, a eco-ansiedade não apresentou efeitos moderadores significativos no evitamento de informação. No entanto, os resultados indicaram que, embora a urgência (crise/emergência) nas mensagens sobre as alterações climáticas não influenciasse diretamente o evitamento de informação, esta tinha um impacto significativo no comportamento de envolvimento, particularmente entre os indivíduos com menor ansiedade ecológica. Os resultados parecem indicar que os níveis de ansiedade dos indivíduos podem ter de ser tomados em consideração, ao enquadrar a informação que realça a urgência das alterações climáticas, para "captar" a atenção dos indivíduos e motivá-los a agir. Framing messages so that their effectiveness is increased is a crucial “art” in today's world, where the information environment is often overloaded, being increasingly difficult to “catch” individual’s attention and motivate them to act. This is often the case with climate change communication. Hence, this research aimed to analyse how communication framing as a climate crisis or emergency, could reduce or increase the probability of individuals avoiding related information or engage in sustainable behaviour, as a strategy to adapt to climate change. Moreover, the role of eco-anxiety as a moderator of such relationship was also studied, namely as a motivator for defensive information avoidance. To study this, a quantitative method with an experimental design was implemented with 215 participants. Contrary to initial expectations, globally, eco-anxiety did not exhibit significant moderating effects on information avoidance. However, findings indicated that while urgency (crisis / emergency) in climate change messaging did not directly influence information avoidance, it significantly impacted behavioural engagement, particularly among individuals with lower eco-anxiety. The results seemingly indicate that individuals' anxiety levels may need to be taken into consideration, when framing information highlighting the urgency of climate change, to“catch” individuals’ attention and motivate them to act.

    Authors: Mahnel, Philippa Josephine;

    Esta dissertação examina como diferentes tipos de vestuário de moda (convencional, sustentável) afetam o comportamento de compra dos consumidores (intenção de compra do produto, disposição de pagar e perceção de qualidade). Além disso, investiga o efeito da influência social nos processos de tomada de decisão dos consumidores em relação à moda sustentável. Adicionalmente, o aspeto da consciência ambiental é analisado para entender o mecanismo indireto pelo qual o tipo de vestuário de moda influencia o comportamento de compra dos consumidores. Os resultados mostram que os consumidores exibem comportamentos de compra favoráveis em relação à moda sustentável em comparação com a moda convencional, demonstrando uma intenção superior de comprar moda sustentável, uma maior disposição para pagar mais por moda sustentável e uma perceção superior da qualidade da moda sustentável. Os resultados também mostram que a influência social afeta significativamente e de maneira positiva os comportamentos dos consumidores associados à moda sustentável, especialmente em níveis elevados. No entanto, embora a análise sugira que existe uma relação direta entre o tipo de vestuário de moda e o comportamento de compra dos consumidores, a preocupação ambiental não explica indiretamente essa relação mais aprofundadamente. No geral, os resultados fornecem implicações teóricas e práticas relevantes, contribuindo para a literatura sobre moda sustentável ao oferecer um entendimento mais detalhado sobre a adoção da moda sustentável. This dissertation examines how different types of fashion clothing (conventional, sustainable) impact consumers’ purchase behavior (product purchase intention, willingness to pay, and perceived quality). In addition, it examines the moderating role of social influence on consumers' decision-making processes in the context of sustainable fashion. Furthermore, the mediating role of environmental concern is analyzed to understand the indirect mechanism by which the type of fashion clothing influences consumers' purchase behavior. Findings show that consumers display favorable purchasing behaviors towards sustainable fashion compared to conventional fashion, showing a higher intention to buy sustainable fashion, a higher willingness to pay more for sustainable fashion, and a superior quality perception of sustainable fashion. Results also show that social influence significantly moderates the positive consumer behaviors associated with sustainable fashion, especially at high levels. However, while the analysis suggests that a significant direct relationship exists between the type of fashion clothing and consumers' purchasing behavior, environmental concern does not indirectly explain this relationship further. Altogether, the findings yield relevant theoretical and practical implications, contributing to the literature on sustainable fashion by providing a more nuanced understanding of how sustainable fashion adoption occurs.

    Authors: Mérian, Sarah;

    Esta investigação examina a complexa interação entre a alavancagem financeira, as emissões de CO2 e o desempenho de empresas apoiadas por capital de risco, investigando a sua influência nas métricas financeiras e nas avaliações do mercado de ações durante 3 períodos consecutivos com um ano de defasagem. Centrando-se em entidades apoiadas por capital de risco, o estudo examina a relação entre elevada alavancagem financeira e indicadores de desempenho financeiro mais baixos, como ROE, ROA e Q de Tobin. Simultaneamente, explora as repercussões de menores emissões de CO2 no desempenho financeiro destas empresas, com o objectivo de descobrir correlações positivas entre as emissões de CO2 e os indicadores financeiros. A metodologia utiliza análise de dados em painel integrando conjuntos de dados da Thomson VentureXpert, Compustat via WRDS e bancos de dados Refinitiv Eikon. O conjunto de dados inclui 326 empresas apoiadas por capital de risco dos EUA de 2002 a 2022, abrangendo desempenho financeiro, emissões de CO2 e variáveis de controle para uma avaliação abrangente. As conclusões do estudo indicam que uma maior alavancagem financeira afeta inicialmente negativamente o ROA e o ROE, com o Q de Tobin mostrando impacto limitado. Em contraste, emissões mais baixas de CO2 correlacionam-se consistentemente com ROE, ROA e Q de Tobin mais elevados em todos os períodos, embora o efeito sobre o ROE varie ao longo do tempo. Este estudo destaca as relações complexas que moldam a dinâmica financeira entre empresas apoiadas por capital de risco. This research examines the complex interplay between financial leverage, CO2 emissions and the performance, of venture capital-backed companies, investigating their influence on financial metrics and stock market valuations over 3 consecutive one-year-lagged periods. Focusing on venture capital-backed entities, the study examines the relationship between high financial leverage and lower financial performance indicators such as ROE, ROA and Tobin's Q. Simultaneously, it explores the repercussions of lower CO2 emissions on the financial performance of these companies, with the aim of discovering positive correlations between CO2 emissions and financial indicators. The methodology uses panel data analysis integrating datasets from Thomson VentureXpert, Compustat via WRDS and Refinitiv Eikon databases. The dataset includes 326 US venture backed companies from 2002 to 2022, encompassing financial performance, CO2 emissions, and control variables for a comprehensive assessment. The study findings indicate that higher financial leverage negatively affects ROA and ROE initially, with Tobin's Q showing limited impact. In contrast, lower CO2 emissions consistently correlate with higher ROE, ROA, and Tobin's Q across all periods, although the effect on ROE varies over time. This study highlights the complex relationships that shape financial dynamics among venture capital-backed companies.

    A aviação global contribui significativamente para a mudança climática, representando cerca de 2,5% das emissões globais. Os Combustíveis de Aviação Sustentáveis (SAF) oferecem uma alternativa promissora, emitindo até 80% menos CO2 do que o combustível de aviação convencional. No entanto, espera-se que os preços do SAF superem os preços do querosene fóssil, levando a aumentos de custos para os passageiros. Esta tese estuda como a introdução do SAF influencia os principais fatores de comportamento do cliente na indústria da aviação no mercado europeu e se os incentivos podem efetivamente encorajar uma adoção maior. Uma análise de conteúdo qualitativa usando a metodologia de Gioia foi conduzida com base em 15 entrevistas semiestruturadas com especialistas da indústria da aviação, e foram derivadas descobertas-chave. Utilizando os insights coletados nas entrevistas com especialistas, foi realizada uma pesquisa com o público em geral, com 261 participantes. As entrevistas com especialistas confirmam a literatura existente sobre a importância do SAF e a necessidade de novas estratégias para engajar efetivamente os clientes durante a introdução no mercado. Os resultados da pesquisa demonstram que fatores como sensibilidade ambiental, consideração dos impactos ambientais na reserva, medidas de compensação anteriores, frequência de voos, sexo e idade (associada ao rendimento) influenciam positivamente a disponibilidade para pagar pelo SAF. Os resultados identificam elementos cruciais para alcançar um voo mais neutro em carbono com SAF do ponto de vista do cliente. Eles ilustram como os incentivos podem criar um cenário vantajoso para ambos, beneficiando tanto as companhias aéreas quanto os clientes. Global aviation significantly contributes to climate change, representing about 2.5% of global emissions. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) offer a promising alternative, emitting up to 80% less CO2 than conventional jet fuel. However, SAF prices are expected to surpass fossil kerosene prices, leading to cost increases for passengers. This thesis studies how the introduction of SAF influences key customer behavior factors within the aviation industry in the European market and whether incentives can effectively encourage greater adoption. A qualitative content analysis using Gioia’s methodology was conducted based on 15 semi-structured interviews with aviation industry experts, and key findings were derived. Utilizing the insights gathered from the expert interviews, a survey was carried out among the general public with 261 participants. The expert interviews confirm the extant literature regarding the significance of SAF and the need for new strategies to effectively engage customers during market ramp-up. The survey results demonstrate that key factors positively influence willingness to pay (WTP) for SAF. Factors include environmental awareness, consideration of environmental impacts when booking, previous compensation measures, frequency of flying, gender, and age (linked to income). Incentives can further increase WTP for SAF, most notably for seats with extra legroom and proportionally, most on short-haul flights. The results identify crucial elements for achieving more carbon-neutral flying with SAF from the customer's perspective. They illustrate how incentives can create a win-win scenario, benefiting both airlines and customers.

    Authors: Camerana, Lorenzo Vittorio Michele Maria;

    A indústria automotiva encontra-se em um ponto crucial, enfrentando o desafio crítico de reduzir sua pegada ambiental. Esta dissertação examina o potencial transformador dos motores a amônia e dos combustíveis nanoeletro como soluções potenciais para alcançar um futuro sem carbono. Os motores a amônia oferecem um caminho revolucionário, reduzindo as emissões de CO₂ com mudanças mínimas na infraestrutura existente. Paralelamente, os NEFs representam uma abordagem inovadora para aprimorar a tecnologia de baterias, aproveitando a eletricidade renovável e proporcionando melhorias na entrega de energia, na vida útil das baterias e na eficiência geral. A pesquisa integra insights qualitativos de especialistas da indústria com dados quantitativos de uma pesquisa com profissionais do setor automotivo para avaliar o potencial de adoção, os benefícios e os obstáculos de ambas as tecnologias. Os resultados sugerem que, embora os motores a amônia e os NEFs tenham grande potencial para melhorar a sustentabilidade ambiental, sua adoção em larga escala atualmente é impedida por altos custos, desafios técnicos e o foco da indústria em veículos elétricos. A pressão regulatória e a capacidade da indústria de se adaptar a novas tecnologias são essenciais para superar esses obstáculos. Este estudo destaca a necessidade crucial de investimentos e esforços colaborativos para integrar essas tecnologias no mundo automotivo, impulsionando a indústria em direção a um futuro mais verde. The automotive industry is at a standpoint, faced with the critical challenge of reducing its environmental footprint. This dissertation examines the transformative potential of ammonia engines and nano-electro fuels as potential solutions to achieving a carbon-free future. Ammonia engines provide a revolutionary path, cutting CO₂ emissions with minimal change to current infrastructure. In parallel, NEFs are an innovative approach to tackle battery technology, leveraging on renewable electricity and offering improvements in power delivery, battery life, and overall efficiency. The research integrates qualitative insights from industry experts with quantitative data from a survey of automotive professionals to assess the adoption potential, benefits, and barriers of both of these technologies. The findings suggest that while ammonia engine and NEFs have great potential for improving environmental sustainability, their widespread adoption is currently impeded by high costs, technical challenges, and the industry’s focus on electric vehicles. Regulatory pressure and the industry’s ability to adapt to new technologies is essential for overcoming these barriers. This study highlights the crucial need for investments and collaborative efforts to integrate these technologies into the automotive world, driving the industry towards a greener future.

    A gestão dos resíduos de plástico representa uma questão de sustentabilidade muito debatida. Cerca de um terço dos resíduos de plástico pós-consumo são reciclados na UE, sendo os restantes divididos equitativamente entre a valorização energética e a deposição em aterro. Enquanto interveniente a montante na cadeia de valor dos plásticos industriais, a indústria química desempenha um papel fundamental na transição para uma economia circular. Em conjunto com os métodos de reciclagem convencionais, espera-se que um conjunto de novas tecnologias, sob a designação genérica de "reciclagem química", alargue o espetro de polímeros plásticos elegíveis para inclusão no ciclo de reciclagem. Ao aplicar uma metodologia de investigação qualitativa-empírica, envolvendo 17 entrevistas semi estruturadas, este estudo contribui para o discurso académico existente. Em primeiro lugar, explora as motivações subjacentes à participação na reciclagem química. Em segundo lugar, o estudo aborda os desafios e os factores de sucesso da implementação de modelos empresariais de reciclagem de produtos químicos, centrando-se no envolvimento das partes interessadas. As conclusões sublinham a importância do envolvimento das partes interessadas. Os contributos incluem a participação em plataformas multi-intervenientes, para facilitar a colaboração entre as partes interessadas, a fim de educar conjuntamente a sociedade sobre a reciclagem de produtos químicos para obter uma aceitação mais ampla, bem como práticas de envolvimento específicas das partes interessadas. Em última análise, o estudo contribui para colmatar a lacuna entre a investigação académica e a prática industrial, fornecendo informações sobre o complexo panorama da reciclagem química e do envolvimento das partes interessadas na indústria química europeia. The management of plastic waste represents a heavily discussed sustainability issue. About one third of post-consumer plastic waste is recycled in the EU, with the remainder split evenly between energy recovery and landfill. As an upstream player in the industrial plastics value chain, the chemical industry plays a key role in the transition to a circular economy through its research into recycling processes. In tandem with conventional recycling methods, a collection of new technologies under the umbrella term “chemical recycling” is expected to broaden the spectrum of plastic polymers eligible for inclusion in the recycling loop. By applying a qualitative-empirical research methodology, involving 17 semi-structured interviews, this study contributes to the existing scholarly discourse. First, it explores the motivations behind engaging in chemical recycling. Second, the study addresses the challenges and success factors of implementing chemical recycling business models (CRBMs), focusing on stakeholder-specific and cross-stakeholder engagement. The findings underscore the importance of stakeholder engagement in implementing and managing CRBMs, taking a closer look into relationships with policymakers, suppliers, customers, NGOs, and technology certification bodies. Theoretical and managerial contributions include participation in multi-stakeholder platforms such as associations to facilitate cross-stakeholder collaboration to jointly educate society on chemical recycling to gain broader acceptance as well as stakeholder-specific engagement practices. Ultimately, the study contributes to bridging the gap between academic research and industry practice, providing insights into the complex landscape of CR and stakeholder engagement in the European chemical industry.

    Esta tese investiga o impacto da política climática nos investimentos de capital de risco (VC) em tecnologia verde, abordando uma lacuna significativa na investigação. Através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas com dez experientes investidores de capital de risco europeus, o estudo examina como as políticas climáticas influenciam suas decisões de investimento em várias dimensões de risco: mercado do produto, tecnologia, regulamentação, saída e risco pessoal. Os resultados indicam que a política climática é um fator de demanda crucial para as empresas de tecnologia verde, moldando significativamente a dimensão do mercado e as perspectivas de comercialização. Nas fases iniciais de I&D, o financiamento governamental através de instrumentos de incentivo à tecnologia, como subsídios, é visto de forma positiva, embora a elevada dependência nas fases posteriores suscite preocupações. O risco regulatório é apontado como o maior risco de investimento devido à incerteza quanto à duração e ao rigor das políticas, afetando tanto as fases iniciais de I&D quanto as de difusão no mercado. O risco pessoal é a única categoria que não é afetada pela política climática. O estudo revela que a estratégia de saída prevista para as empresas de tecnologia verde difere da das empresas de tecnologia não verde, uma vez que as aquisições estratégicas são preferidas às OPI. Em conclusão, os investidores em capital de risco reconhecem que a política climática pode catalisar oportunidades de investimento, embora a incerteza da continuidade da política continue a ser um fator de risco crítico. This thesis investigates the impact of climate policy on venture capital (VC) investments in greentech, addressing a significant research gap. By conducting semi-structured interviews with ten experienced European venture capitalists, the study examines how climate policies influence their investment decisions across various risk dimensions: product market, technology, regulatory, exit, and people risk. Findings indicate that climate policy is a crucial demand driver for greentech ventures, significantly shaping the market size and commercialization prospects. In early R&D stages, government funding through technology push instruments such as subsidies is positively viewed, though high dependency in later stages raises concerns. Regulatory risk is highlighted as the biggest investment risk due to the uncertainty of policy duration and stringency, impacting both early R&D and market diffusion stages. People risk is the only category not impacted by climate policy. The study reveals that the expected exit strategy for greentech ventures differs from that of non-greentech ventures as strategic acquisitions are preferred over IPOs. To conclude, venture capitalists acknowledge that climate policy can catalyze investment opportunities, while the uncertainty of policy continuity remains a critical risk factor.

    Authors: Santos, Joana Filipa Récio Francela;

    Authors: Ene, Irina;

    Authors: Ene, Irina;

    Enquadrar mensagens de modo a aumentar a sua eficácia é uma "arte" crucial no mundo atual, onde o meio informativo está muitas vezes sobrecarregado, sendo cada vez mais difícil "captar" a atenção dos indivíduos e motivá-los a agir. Este é frequentemente o caso da comunicação sobre as alterações climáticas. Assim, esta investigação teve como objetivo analisar de que forma o enquadramento da comunicação como uma crise ou emergência climática pode reduzir ou aumentar a probabilidade de os indivíduos evitarem informações relacionadas ou adotarem comportamentos sustentáveis, como estratégia de adaptação às alterações climáticas. Para além disso, foi também estudado o papel da eco-ansiedade como moderador dessa relação, nomeadamente como motivador do evitamento de informação defensiva. Para o efeito, foi implementado um método quantitativo com um desenho experimental com 215 participantes. Contrariamente às expectativas iniciais, globalmente, a eco-ansiedade não apresentou efeitos moderadores significativos no evitamento de informação. No entanto, os resultados indicaram que, embora a urgência (crise/emergência) nas mensagens sobre as alterações climáticas não influenciasse diretamente o evitamento de informação, esta tinha um impacto significativo no comportamento de envolvimento, particularmente entre os indivíduos com menor ansiedade ecológica. Os resultados parecem indicar que os níveis de ansiedade dos indivíduos podem ter de ser tomados em consideração, ao enquadrar a informação que realça a urgência das alterações climáticas, para "captar" a atenção dos indivíduos e motivá-los a agir.
