The present work aims to identify and describe behaviors, attitudes and actions in the context of hospitality as cooperative measures for environmental sustainability in order to get perspectives from the client side and the manager side. Sustainability is a topic that has gained increasing relevance at national and global level, the growing concern with the state of the planet provides a greater reflection on human actions in daily life, which, in this sense, should minimize impacts through products, services, procedures and techniques related to more sustainable environmental development. Through the literature review, it was possible to identify and characterize important elements that helps formulating the research question, serving as a conceptual means of the concepts covered throughout this dissertation and giving meaning to the issues addressed. In order to answer the research questions, this study explored, through questionnaires, the opinion of 320 individuals about the environmental sustainability in the hotel industry. At the same time, through interviews with the board of directors of 2 hotels, 2 hotel groups and 1 local accommodation, it was investigated the motivations and difficulties about adopting sustainable measures in their units. In fact, the results allowed to conclude that environmental sustainability has been gaining a greater importance in the life of the respondents and also entails considerable importance for the hotel industry, although it was understood that the respondents still consider more important other facilities while selecting a hotel or local accommodation in relation to the sustainable environmental measures practiced by the unit, at the same time, it is concluded that the hotel management has been acted on the environmental protection of its x establishments, but the way they implement measures varies according to the strategies that they establish.

Nowadays, ecotourism is defined as a responsible way to travel to a natural area, conserving the environment and the well-being of the local people, while involving the education and interpretation of the surrounding. The goal of this study was to characterize the ecotourism and evaluate its impact on the sustainable development of the island of São Miguel. The perceptions of three groups of people on São Miguel were analysed: tourists, residents and companies in the tourism sector. This empirical investigation characterized the perceptions gathered from these groups, regarding the socioeconomic and environmental impact of ecotourism, therefore answering the R.Q.: What is the socioeconomic and environmental impact of ecotourism on the main stakeholders of tourism on the island of São Miguel? The tourist’s sample is mainly composed of Portuguese tourists (59,5%), and the main factors when choosing São Miguel as their destination are: “Beautiful landscapes”, “Peace and quiet/relaxation” and “Contact with nature”. The tourists reported high environmental concern. Although, 45% of the respondents did not denote tourism impacts on the environment. The sample of residents is mainly made up of people living in Ponta Delgada (73,1%). The standard resident of this sample denotes that with the increase in tourism, there has been some positive aspects, but generally, quality of life has decreased. In addition, there has been an increase in garbage, landscape degradation and displeasure with the government planning for tourism development. Finally, 64,4% of the companies in the tourism sector belong to the accommodation industry and 96,6% of all companies inquired are characterized as local companies. The surveyed companies assess their environmental concern as high, but 75,4% of the companies reveal that it would be possible to develop their activity in a more ecological way.

This research encompasses the sculptures Afonso de Albuquerque by Diogo de Macedo, the sketch of the sculpture Doutrina by Salvador Barata-Feyo and Eu Espero by Fernanda Fragateiro, which are examples of Public Art belonging to the district of Porto. The works of Public Art are daily exposed to adverse weather factors that tend to worsen due to climate change and are subject to anthropic actions that contribute to their material wear and immaterial dissociation by citizens. Given these problems, it is essential to act on public sculpture, and the aim of this dissertation is to develop a methodology based on Risk Assessment and from this to create specific maintenance protocols as opposed to deep conservation and restoration interventions in the future, contributing to a more sustainable protection of the Cultural Heritage over time. For each sculpture an exhaustive diagnosis was carried out considering its material base and including the evaluation of its state of conservation and photographic record. The colorimetric analysis of the three case studies focused on the areas which presented biocolonization, pathologies and vandalism. The SEM analysis of the surfaces of the Eu Espero and sketch of Doutrina sculptures allowed the identification of biological structures, organic compounds and corrosion. The Karsten Pipes methodology allowed characterization of water adsorption and porosity properties of the stone sculptures. The characterization of the surface microbiome of the case studies started with analysis with Dino Lite optical microscope and sampling with tape, complementary methods that allowed visualizing some of the organisms colonizing the sculptures' surfaces. The ATP detection by bioluminescence made it possible to identify and quantify the presence of living organisms on the surface of the works, which allowed for greater accuracy in the choice of points for the extraction of DNA, the basis of the methodology for the characterization of biological communities through metagenomics. The extraction of chlorophyll a focuses on photosynthetic organisms that colonize the case study, and this was observed in the results obtained. From the isolation of organisms and their visualization under the optical microscope, it was possible to identify bacteria (Gram+ and Gram-), yeasts and fungi for the work Doutrina. Through aerobiology studies, the presence of biological particles in suspension was briefly characterized as potential sources of contamination in the vicinity of the studied works. In the sketch of the Doutrina and Eu Espero it was necessary to proceed to an intervention of conservation and restoration to return their aesthetic unity and correct reading of the works. In both interventions it was decided to apply conservation methodologies that were safe for the operator, the work and the environment, following whenever possible the concepts and practices associated with green conservation. The research undertaken in this dissertation confirmed that works of public art are subject to various factors that the conservator-restorer cannot control, highlighting the importance of monitoring them. The automation of the contact between citizens, specialists and works of Public Art through a citizen-science mobile application (App) that allows the active contribution of society in the documentation and active monitoring of the works was briefly discussed in this context.

Sustainability and innovation are two concepts that are increasingly important in all sectors of activity, including higher education. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have a responsibility to play a leading role in promoting sustainable practices, not only in daily operations, but also in educating individuals who are conscious and responsible towards the environment. The main objective of this final master's project is to understand how HEI management promotes good sustainability practices through innovative initiatives. A descriptive qualitative approach will be used, assuming the interview as the main method of data collection. These were carried out with different management bodies responsible for the sustainability department of various HEIs. The proposed objective of this study allowed us to conclude that institutions are truly committed to achieving sustainability in order to build a better future for the next generations. Although HEIs have already created specific teams to deal with sustainability and innovation issues, there are still some challenges to be faced, such as the lack of clear performance indicators and the need to improve sustainability strategic plans. Nevertheless, partnerships with external organizations and positive evaluation of the impact of HEIs are encouraging signs that progress is being made in the right direction.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2023 PortugalAuthors: Lencastre, Carlota Maria Pinto Ribeiro de Castro;A presente dissertação aborda o desperdício alimentar ao nível do consumidor final. This dissertation addresses food waste at the consumer level. This global challenge, estimated at 89 million tons per year, has environmental, social and economic impacts. Although all stages of the food supply chain contribute to the total waste values, the last two, food services and consumption, are the main responsible. For this reason, using a qualitative investigation, through semi-structured interviews with end consumers, it was considered of high importance to identify their motivations, practices, and limitations, in relation to food waste, and possible opportunities to combat it. This study demonstrated that financial and social factors have an influence on consumers' intention to reduce the waste they create. However, several practices were identified, common among the respondents, which caused food waste, essentially due to a lack of skills and knowledge, in addition to having verified that the intention to reduce food waste was often preceded by different competing priorities.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2022 PortugalAuthors: Silva, Sofia Carvalho Moreira da;O desperdício alimentar é um problema à escala mundial com consequências negativas graves a nível económico, social e ambiental. Food waste is a worldwide problem with severe economic, social, and environmental consequences. Like many other sustainable-related topics, food waste has been a subject of increasing attention and concern over the last years. Therefore, new strategies and innovations that aim to combat and minimize the impacts of food waste have emerged, for instance, through new business models. Business models that focus on reducing food waste are categorized as sustainable business models and, consequently, face challenges beyond those that are common to any type of business. The purpose of this study was to explore those challenges using a qualitative methodology. This investigation was accomplished through interviews done to companies that fit the characteristics of those business models and a survey assigned to Portuguese consumers to understand their behavior on this subject and their use of the services offered by the organizations that were interviewed. Throughout the work, the main challenges were identified, mainly related to the lack of receptivity of consumers to this type of business as well as the lack of government support for their development. Some limitations to this study were also detected, which can be seen as opportunities for future research work.

O setor imobiliário a longo, médio e curto prazo assumiu grande importância no contexto turístico. This master's thesis aims to understand the impact of mass tourism and sustainability in the sector of rehabilitation of buildings in the parish of Cedofeita, located in the city of Porto, between 2015 and 2020. In a first stage we tried to highlight the understanding of international concepts of conservation, rehabilitation and restoration in order to obtain a good basis to identify how the rehabilitation of historic buildings and common buildings has been carried out. Given the scenario presented, the general objective of this investigation is to outline an integrated reading of the topics that involve rehabilitation, mass tourism and sustainability. Accordingly, an approach to the predominant urban rehabilitation in one of the largest Portuguese citie as Porto, was made In a first phase the negative and positive impact of mass tourism causing the phenomena of touristification and acceleration of gentrification, in Porto, between 2015 and 2020 was analyzed, The relationship between tourism and rehabilitation was highlighted as the effects of the gathering of these two issues affect the economy. The long, medium and short term real estate sector has assumed great importance in the tourism context. Due to this factor, companies such as Airbnb, which belongs to the accommodation sector, and Idealista, which belongs to the real estate sector, gained greater evidence in the Porto housing real estate sector. In a second moment, the research focused on analyzing the impact of the pandemic situation caused by COVID-19, specifically based on the historic and common buildings rehabilitated in the Cedofeita region. Companies like Remax and Era already existed independently of mass tourism, but they also contributed to the growth of the real estate sector. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020 and 2021 is also reported, as a factor that affected tourism in an extraordinary and unprecedented way. Subsequently, a reflection on the implementation of sustainability in building rehabilitation in the specific context of Porto is proposed. The countries belonging to the European Union, in 2019, signed the European Ecological Pact, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In view of the agreement, specific measures are being prepared in each country in order to achieve the goal. At this stage, the concept of the Circular Economy and its effects on the Portuguese economy were pointed out, as well as the advantages of implementing BIM technology applied to building sustainability. BIM is a technology that has contributed to achieving sustainability in the rehabilitation of buildings in Porto. In order to propose an analysis of the rehabilitated buildings in Porto, a geographical and temporal framework was made, having selected the buildings belonging to the parish of Cedofeita, rehabilitated from 2015 to 2020 as a case study.

This work seeks to underline one of the main challenges of unsustainability of production and consumption systems - energy production - and its long-term impacts, often complex and cumulative, on ecosystems and people's health. In the current context, turn over key systems such as energy production and transport is fundamental in long-term solutions. This work aims to highlight the contribution of Renewable Energy and Electric Mobility as a solution to the unsustainability of the current development paradigm. Also, given the importance of incentives for the promotion and development of Electric Mobility, compares a successful case (Norwegian case) with the Portuguese context, in order to collect and interpret good practices capable of replication incentives. The study focuses mainly on the European Union. The method used is the literature review.

Climate change should be a top priority for countries and cities around the world. Some argue that a precondition for its mitigation is that it should be treated as a moral issue, where short-term individual benefits should be sacrificed for the sake of a long-term common good. This dissertation aims to characterize the reality of the domestic energy sector regarding its negative environmental impact and to analyse the main socio-behavioral theories that seek to explain the individual behavior of carbon consumption, and thus identify the origin and the stimuli that condition the choices and decisions of consumers. To this end, a literature review of the evidence was conducted using the Scopus database. It was also performed an online questionnaire to assess socio demographic and socio-behavioural aspects with a sample of the population living in Portugal. From the literature review, it was concluded that there are 4 commonly used theories: value-belief-norm theory (relationship between values, belief system and personal and social norms), theory of planned behaviour (focus on the personal intention which, in turn, leads to a certain type of behaviour), ABC theory (influence of external factors) and NAT theory (explores the reasons that lead someone to act in an altruistic way). From the qualitative analysis of the results obtained from the questionnaire, it was possible to extrapolate for the sample of the population studied that there is a greater focus on external factors, to the detriment of a greater self-awareness on the subject. In conclusion, the solution must inevitably involve the practical application of the lessons drawn from the analysis of socio-behavioural theories, which show us the variety of factors responsible for the behaviour of each person.
