    In this paper, we analyze the implications of assuming that the intensity of aspirations is endogenous. In accordance with empirical evidence, consumption aspirations decrease with capital accumulation while environmental ones increase. We show that such a change in the intensity of aspirations gives rise to a U-shaped relationship between capital accumulation and environmental quality. We also study the implications of our assumption concerning the optimal allocation and show that the steady-state capital stock can be larger or smaller than the one corresponding to the modified golden rule. In addition, for realistic parameter values, the decentralization of the optimal allocation requires the implementation of a maintenance investment subsidy and a lump-sum transfer from the old to the young generation.

    Authors: Neves, Diogo Pinto Teixeira;

    The world is changing rapidly and sustainability is being one of the main drivers of change. The tourism industry is no exception and its players are also modifying their patterns and behaviours in order to become more sustainable. The certification of whole destinations as sustainable tourism destinations is a relatively new process which goes beyond the current practice of certifying individual tourism businesses. There are a relatively small number of certified destinations worldwide. As this phenomenon is on an early stage, there is an opportunity for studying pre and post destination certification experience for the destination and visitors. This research will focus on the destination experience and its aim is to investigate the perspective of destination managers on these certification programs. Its objectives include collecting information on the reason(s) why destination managers decided to apply for a certification program and which were their initial expectations; investigating the consequences of joining such program; and understanding destinations managers’ perception on the future of their participation in the certification program. It was important to proceed with a literature review to gather information on topics related to this subject in order to better understand what was already being written, enabling for an understanding of research gaps that led to the chosen research objectives. To achieve the desired results, the chosen methodology to carry out this research was to conduct interviews to different destination managers whose destinations are participating in a certification program. The main findings show several different reasons for destinations deciding to join as well as distinct initial expectations by their managers but they also demonstrate a positive perception towards certification programs and the desire to keep relying on them to improve their results and to continue their sustainability path. O mundo está a mudar rapidamente e a sustentabilidade está a ser um dos principais motores da mudança. A indústria do turismo não é exceção e os seus agentes estão, também eles, a modificar os seus padrões e comportamentos de modo a tornarem-se mais sustentáveis. A certificação de destinos como um todo, classificando-os como destinos turísticos sustentáveis é um processo relativamente novo que vai além da prática atual de certificação de empresas de turismo. Há um número relativamente pequeno de destinos certificados em todo o mundo. Como este fenómeno está numa fase inicial, há uma oportunidade de estudar a experiência do pré e pós-certificação para o destino e os seus visitantes. Esta investigação centrar-se-á na experiência do destino e o seu objectivo é investigar a perspetiva dos gestores do destino sobre estes programas de certificação. Os seus objectivos incluem a recolha de informação sobre a(s) razão(ões) pela qual os gestores de destino decidiram candidatar-se a um programa de certificação e quais foram as suas expectativas iniciais; investigar as consequências da adesão a esse programa; e compreender a perceção dos gestores de destino sobre o futuro da sua participação no programa de certificação. Era importante proceder a uma revisão bibliográfica para recolher informações sobre temas relacionados com este assunto, a fim de melhor compreender o que já estava a ser escrito, permitindo, assim, uma compreensão das lacunas de investigação, que levaram aos objectivos de investigação escolhidos. Para alcançar os resultados desejados, a metodologia escolhida para realizar esta pesquisa foi a realização de entrevistas a diferentes gestores, cujos destinos estão a participar num programa de certificação.     Authors: Duarte, Manuel Maria de Ponte Teixeira;

    This study intends to give an overview of the Portuguese electrical industry. The approach was based on the strategy concept, which conducted the analysis. The analysis done of the strategy concept had its focus on both the nature of this concept and its applicability within the economic world. This thesis concluded that strategy is a plan for the future. The study of the concept leads to the creation of models of analysis for business realities. The models used in this work were SWOT analysis, PEST analysis, and Porter’s Five Forces. These were the tools used in this work to approach the electrical industry in Portugal. The report concludes that government policies will have great importance in the industry’s future. It is assumed that the future of the industry will involve an investment in renewable energy, in the development of the grid, and in sustainable mobility, mainly through electrical energy. The main trends identified are decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization. Este trabalho pretende dar uma visão geral da indústria elétrica Portuguesa. A abordagem foi feita com base no conceito de estratégia, que guiou a análise. O conceito estratégia foi analisado numa tentativa de perceber o que é e qual a sua aplicabilidade no mundo empresarial. A conclusão é que estratégia é um plano para o futuro. O estudo do conceito levou à criação de modelos de analise para a realidade empresarial. Os modelos usados foram: análise SWOT, análise PEST, análise das cinco forças de Porter. Foi com estas ferramentas que abordei a indústria elétrica Portuguesa. As conclusões da análise foram que as políticas do governo serão muito importantes no futuro da indústria. É assumido que o futuro da indústria passará por um investimento na energia renovável, no desenvolvimento da rede e na mobilidade sustentável, através da energia elétrica. As principais tendências são descarbonização, descentralização e digitalização.

    Authors: Lelong, Yann;

    Against the backdrop of the decarbonization of the world, this paper aims to analyze the impacts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as a proxy for environmental performance, as well as green innovation on corporate investors’ financial performance. The sample consists of 133 U.S. firms with corporate venture capital (CVC) activity between 2002-2019. The findings reveal that both environmental performance and green innovation positively affect corporate investors’ financial performance. Moreover, the combined effect of environmental performance and green innovation on financial performance is examined, suggesting a positive relationship. These findings contribute to the ongoing debate on the role of corporations in reaching net zero emissions. The results of this study indicate that corporate investors should have a financial interest to reduce their emissions and drive green innovations. Contra o pano de fundo da descarbonização do mundo, esta análise visa analisar os impactos das emissões de gases com efeito de estufa (GEE), como um indicador do desempenho ambiental, bem como a inovação verde, no desempenho financeiro dos investidores corporativos. A amostra consiste em 133 empresas americanas com atividade de capital de risco corporativo (CVC) entre 2002-2019. As conclusões revelam que tanto o desempenho ambiental como a inovação verde afetam positivamente o desempenho financeiro dos investidores corporativos. Adicionalmente, o efeito combinado do desempenho ambiental e da inovação verde no desempenho financeiro é examinado, sugerindo uma relação positiva. Estas conclusões contribuem para o debate em curso sobre o papel das empresas no alcance de emissões líquidas zero. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que os investidores empresariais têm um interesse financeiro em reduzir as suas emissões e impulsionar inovações ecológicas.

    Authors: Dias, Marcelo Filipe Tavares;

    This dissertation aims to address for energy transition movement in Europe, by evaluating each country's ability to decouple economic growth from GHG emissions. A Stochastic frontier model was deployed to allow us to estimate technical efficiencies and TFP growth for 25 European countries between 2005 and 2019. The model included the ratio between gross domestic product and greenhouse gas emissions as output, time, human capital, total energy consumption per worker as inputs and a set of environmental variables. No country in the data was fully efficient in the period in analysis, however, France, Portugal and Sweden reached that status in specific years. Estimations suggested that solid fossil fuel consumption, a bad business environment, country´s economic complexity and demand for heating building have a negative impact on technical efficiency. Contrarily, the remaining environmental variables as population index, the share of energy consumed coming from clean energy sources, and energy dependence impact positively technical efficiency scores. A decomposition analysis was also performed, and it was possible to observe a positive technical change, representing an upward movement of the production frontier with time that contributed partially to a negative technical efficiency change by increasing the country´s relative distance from the frontier, outweighing the positive change in technical change leading to an overall negative TFP change. Total factor accumulation also contributed negatively to decoupling growth. Consequently, output growth was significantly explained by positive random shocks. A dissertação tem como objetivo abordar a transição energética na Europa, avaliando a capacidade dos países para desvincular o seu crescimento das emissões de gases de efeito de estufa. Neste sentido, foi aplicado um modelo de fronteira estocástica para estimar as eficiências técnicas e o crescimento da produtividade dos fatores para 25 países europeus entre 2005 e 2019. O modelo inclui o rácio entre o produto interno bruto e as emissões de gases de efeito de estufa como output, assim como um conjunto de variáveis ambientais. Nenhum país foi totalmente eficiente durante o período contemplado, no entanto, França, Portugal e Suécia atingiram esse status em determinados anos. As estimações do modelo sugerem que o consumo de combustíveis fósseis sólidos, um ambiente empresarial desfavorável, a complexidade económica do país e a procura por aquecimento de edifícios têm um impacto negativo na eficiência técnica. As restantes variáveis ambientais como o índice de população, a percentagem de energia consumida proveniente de fontes de energia limpa e a dependência energética impactam positivamente os resultados de eficiência técnica dos países. Realizou-se ainda uma análise de decomposição onde foi possível observar uma variação técnica positiva, que contribui parcialmente para uma variação da eficiência técnica negativa, aumentando a distância relativa de cada país em relação à fronteira e resultando numa variação do crescimento total da produtividade dos fatores negativa. A acumulação de fatores impactou também negativamente o crescimento do output pelo que este é consequentemente explicado por choques aleatórios positivos.

    The purpose of this paper is to explore current consumers' perception towards circular economy (CE) principles and recommendations for the hotel industry. To enhance sustainable solutions and to promote the increase of green practices that translate into economic and environmental benefits, CE principles were addressed, and consumers' perceptions and recommendations taken into account. In the current research, a survey using online questionnaires was employed to gain understanding of the beliefs of hotel consumers towards CE and green practices. The 167 respondents were consumers mainly from Portugal's three main tourist destinations: Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve. The main findings show that even though consumers claim that energy (29.4%), environmental (42.5%) and social (43.1%) sustainability aspects have a positive influence on their hotel selection, only half of those strongly agreeing to such influence were willing to pay extra costs if such sustainability solutions were to be offered in their choice hotels.

    Advancement in packaging technology has played an essential role in reducing food waste and losses; however, most of this technology relies mostly on the use of plastics. Thus, there is an imminent need to think seriously about the transition towards a circular bioeconomy of innovative biobased materials with biodegradability potentials. This paper examines the driving forces behind the changes in food plastic packaging regimes and specifically seeks to understand how socio-technical configurations may influence niches to transition to a circular bioeconomy, particularly biobased biodegradable plastic materials. By employing a systematic review of the literature, we find that coordination with other back-end socio-technical systems that provide valorization of packaging waste is crucial to enable the transition. The literature indicates that one possible transition path is that the biobased biodegradable materials serve as “carriers of food waste”. The paper contributes to the discussion on the dynamics of food packaging in the transition to a bioeconomy viewed through the lenses of a socio-technical system (niche–regime–landscape), which continues to reinforce future actions, leading to better management of packaging end-of-life.

    With the current advancements in the field of the circular economy the distinct advantages that it brings for food and beverage companies are pretty clear. Nonetheless, despite the increasing amount of literature concerning the broad concept of the circular economy and their many potential advantages there has been limited investigation into the particular techniques and methods that food and beverage corporations have implemented to incorporate circular economy principles in their operations. This encompasses methods of minimizing waste and emissions, as well as maximizing the utilization of resources such as water, energy, and materials. For this research, a multiple qualitative case method was used to gather data. Interviews were made with different food & beverage companies to understand to what extent they are familiar with CE and if they integrate these measures in their operations, as well as how they are making efforts to reduce emissions and waste effectively. Additionally, possible reasons for implementation barriers are analyzed accordingly. Com os actuais avanços no campo da economia circular, as vantagens distintas que traz para as empresas de alimentos e bebidas são bastante claras. No entanto, apesar da quantidade crescente de literatura relativa ao conceito alargado da economia circular e das suas muitas vantagens potenciais, tem havido uma investigação limitada sobre as técnicas e métodos particulares que as empresas de alimentos e bebidas implementaram para incorporar os princípios da economia circular nas suas operações. Isto engloba métodos de minimização de resíduos e emissões, bem como a maximização da utilização de recursos como a água, a energia e os materiais. Para esta investigação, foi utilizado um método de múltiplos casos qualitativos para a recolha de dados. Foram feitas entrevistas com diferentes empresas de alimentos e bebidas para compreender até que ponto estão familiarizadas com a CE e se integram estas medidas nas suas operações, bem como como como estão a fazer esforços para reduzir eficazmente as emissões e os resíduos. Além disso, as possíveis razões para as barreiras à implementação são analisadas em conformidade.

    Authors: Carvalho, Ana de Sousa Francisco;

    The circular economy (CE) refers to a model of production and consumption that is restorative and regenerative by nature. The strategy behind the circular business model relies on extending a product’s lifetime. The previous may be achieved through manufacturing of goods that are durable and simple to repair, reuse and replace its parts. In turn, the model translates into a reduction in resource consumption and waste production. Reuse consists of keeping materials in use for longer and, it may prove crucial behaviour in tackling the current waste and plastic pollution crisis. “Plastic trash has become so ubiquitous that it has prompted efforts to draft a global treaty negotiated by the United Nations (UN)”. The issue at hand warrants a solution which rethinks the packaging and the materials utilised. In light of the pressing nature of the underlying topic detailed above, the purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it explores the drivers and challenges of consumers’ purchase decisions with respect to reusing empty perfume bottles; in other words, refilling perfume bottles, in the United Kingdom (UK). Secondly, it addresses the underlying motivations, attitudes and trade-off choices towards environmentally friendly purchases which, in turn, allows to ascertain the most successful refillable perfume system for the UK market. This paper is relevant as it provides insights regarding the influence of consumers’ antecedents and trade-offs in the case of refillable perfume systems. Said insights allow to precict with greater accuracy consumer behaviours purchase decision. Primary data was collected through a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods, an online self-completed survey (N=257) and face to face, semi structured script, interviews (N=5), respectively. vi The present research revealed that, on the one hand, consumers are willing incorporate circular economy systems, such as reuse by means of refill of empty perfume containers. Perceived benefits include cost savings, waste reduction, convenience, ease and transparency. On the other hand, perceived barriers include logistical efforts, loss of flexibility, time consuming processes and low savings. Both need to be taken into consideration when designing the refill business model, in order to put in place a robust operation that will appeal to consumers. A economia circular (CE) refere-se a um modelo de produção e consumo que é restaurativo e regenerativo por natureza. A estratégia subjacente ao modelo de negócio circular é baseada na extensão da vida útil de um produto. Tal pode ser alcançado através da produção de bens duráveis, simples de reparar, reutilizar e substituir as suas partes. Subsequentemente, o modelo leva a uma redução nos recursos consumidos e no desperdício produzido. Reutilizar consiste em manter os materiais em uso por mais tempo, tal pode se revelar um comportamento crucial para lidar com a atual crise de poluição de resíduos e plásticos. “O lixo de plásticos tornou-se tão omnipresente que levou a esforços para elaborar um tratado global negociado pelas Nações Unidas (UN)”. O problema em questão necessita de uma solução que repensa as embalagens e os materias utilizados. Considerando a natureza premente do tópico subjacente detalhado acima, o objective deste artigo é duplo. Em primeiro lugar, explora os drivers e os desafios das decisões de compra dos consumidores no que diz respeito à reutilização de frascos de perfume vazios; por outras palavras, refill de frascos de perfume, no Reino Unido. Em segundo lugar, aborda as motivações subjacentes, as atitudes e as escolhas de trade-off de compras ecológicas que, por sua vez, permite verificar o sistema de perfume refillable que será mais bem sucedido no mercado do Reino Unido. Este artigo é relevante na medida em que apresenta conhecimentos relativamente à influência dos antecedentes dos consumidores e dos trade-offs no caso de sistemas de perfume refillable. Estas percepções permitem prever com maior precisão os comportamentos dos consumidores na decisão de compra. Os dados primários foram recolhidos através de uma mistura de métodos quantitativos e qualitativos, um survey online auto-realizado (N=257) e entrevistas face a face, com guião semi-estruturado (N=5), respectivamente. ix O presente estudo revelou que, por um lado, os consumidores estão dispostos a incorporar sistemas de economia circular, tal como, reutilizar por meio de refills de recipientes de perfume vazios. Os benefícios reconhecidos pelos consumidores incluem poupança de custos, redução de desperdício, conveniência, facilidade e transparência. Por outro lado, as barreiras reconhecidas incluem esforços logísticos, perda de flexibilidade, processos demorados e poupança reduzida. Ambos devem ser levados em consideração no momento de design dos modelos de negócio de refill, com o objetivo de colocar em prática uma operação robusta que irá apelar aos consumidores.

    Authors: Kristen, Johanna Gloria;

    This dissertation examines how water sports wear companies can implement circular economy principles. To answer the research question, I adopted a qualitative research approach, utilized the ReSolve framework and conducted a comparative case study. I studied five wetsuit companies, operating on the European market and striving to implement sustainability into their core business strategy. Wetsuit brands face challenges and tensions in implementing full circular systems as recycling old wetsuit material into new fully-functioning wetsuits is not possible yet. The findings show that brands are individually responsible in implementing principles working towards circularity. The degree of engagement in establishing a product loop varies throughout the industry, as some brands lack solutions, where others have already established counteractions. This reveals potential to learn and grow from each other. However, the sector puts great effort into innovating sustainable methods and creating a positive impact even through small gestures - for instance by innovating alternative wetsuit components, using renewable energy sources, decreasing waste during the supply chain and establishing recycling mechanisms to turn old wetsuit material into products such as yoga mats, shoes or mulch mats for trees. Moreover, brands as well take actions on a socio-economic level by donating or supporting various projects. Generally seen, the water sports wear industry operates encouragingly on this matter, inviting other industries to take an example and follow. Esta dissertação analisa como empresas de vestuário para desportos aquáticos podem implementar a economia circular. Para responder à questão de investigação, adaptei uma abordagem qualitativa, utilizei o quadro ReSolve e fiz um estudo de caso comparativo. Estudei cinco empresas de fatos de mergulho na Europa que procuram implementar a sustentabilidade na sua estratégia de negócio. As marcas enfrentam desafios na implementação de sistemas circulares completos, pois a reciclagem de materiais usados ainda não é viável para a produção de fatos funcionais e os resultados mostram que as marcas são responsáveis pela circularidade. O grau de empenhamento no estabelecimento de um ciclo do produto varia em toda a indústria, sendo que algumas marcas não têm soluções, contudo outras já agem. Este facto revela um potencial de aprendizagem e crescimento mútuo. No entanto, o setor inova em métodos sustentáveis, reduzindo resíduos e reciclando material usado em produtos alternativos. Também tomam medidas socioeconómicas, apoiando diferentes projetos. De um modo geral, a indústria de vestuário para desportos aquáticos atua de forma encorajadora, convidando outras indústrias a seguirem o seu exemplo.
