description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2019 PortugalPublisher:Elsevier BV In this paper, we analyze the implications of assuming that the intensity of aspirations is endogenous. In accordance with empirical evidence, consumption aspirations decrease with capital accumulation while environmental ones increase. We show that such a change in the intensity of aspirations gives rise to a U-shaped relationship between capital accumulation and environmental quality. We also study the implications of our assumption concerning the optimal allocation and show that the steady-state capital stock can be larger or smaller than the one corresponding to the modified golden rule. In addition, for realistic parameter values, the decentralization of the optimal allocation requires the implementation of a maintenance investment subsidy and a lump-sum transfer from the old to the young generation.

The tourism industry is no exception and its players are also modifying their patterns and behaviours in order to become more sustainable. The certification of whole destinations as sustainable tourism destinations is a relatively new process which goes beyond the current practice of certifying individual tourism businesses. There are a relatively small number of certified destinations worldwide. As this phenomenon is on an early stage, there is an opportunity for studying pre and post destination certification experience for the destination and visitors. This research will focus on the destination experience and its aim is to investigate the perspective of destination managers on these certification programs. Its objectives include collecting information on the reason(s) why destination managers decided to apply for a certification program and which were their initial expectations; investigating the consequences of joining such program; and understanding destinations managers’ perception on the future of their participation in the certification program. It was important to proceed with a literature review to gather information on topics related to this subject in order to better understand what was already being written, enabling for an understanding of research gaps that led to the chosen research objectives. To achieve the desired results, the chosen methodology to carry out this research was to conduct interviews to different destination managers whose destinations are participating in a certification program. The main findings show several different reasons for destinations deciding to join as well as distinct initial expectations by their managers but they also demonstrate a positive perception towards certification programs and the desire to keep relying on them to improve their results and to continue their sustainability path. The sample consists of 133 U.S. firms with corporate venture capital (CVC) activity between 2002-2019. The findings reveal that both environmental performance and green innovation positively affect corporate investors’ financial performance. Moreover, the combined effect of environmental performance and green innovation on financial performance is examined, suggesting a positive relationship. These findings contribute to the ongoing debate on the role of corporations in reaching net zero emissions. The results of this study indicate that corporate investors should have a financial interest to reduce their emissions and drive green innovations.

A Stochastic frontier model was deployed to allow us to estimate technical efficiencies and TFP growth for 25 European countries between 2005 and 2019. The model included the ratio between gross domestic product and greenhouse gas emissions as output, time, human capital, total energy consumption per worker as inputs and a set of environmental variables. No country in the data was fully efficient in the period in analysis, however, France, Portugal and Sweden reached that status in specific years. Estimations suggested that solid fossil fuel consumption, a bad business environment, country´s economic complexity and demand for heating building have a negative impact on technical efficiency. Contrarily, the remaining environmental variables as population index, the share of energy consumed coming from clean energy sources, and energy dependence impact positively technical efficiency scores. A decomposition analysis was also performed, and it was possible to observe a positive technical change, representing an upward movement of the production frontier with time that contributed partially to a negative technical efficiency change by increasing the country´s relative distance from the frontier, outweighing the positive change in technical change leading to an overall negative TFP change. Total factor accumulation also contributed negatively to decoupling growth. Consequently, output growth was significantly explained by positive random shocks.

Marcelo Gaspar in OpenAIREThe purpose of this paper is to explore current consumers' perception towards circular economy (CE) principles and recommendations for the hotel industry. To enhance sustainable solutions and to promote the increase of green practices that translate into economic and environmental benefits, CE principles were addressed, and consumers' perceptions and recommendations taken into account. In the current research, a survey using online questionnaires was employed to gain understanding of the beliefs of hotel consumers towards CE and green practices. The 167 respondents were consumers mainly from Portugal's three main tourist destinations: Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve. The main findings show that even though consumers claim that energy (29.4%), environmental (42.5%) and social (43.1%) sustainability aspects have a positive influence on their hotel selection, only half of those strongly agreeing to such influence were willing to pay extra costs if such sustainability solutions were to be offered in their choice hotels.

Advancement in packaging technology has played an essential role in reducing food waste and losses; however, most of this technology relies mostly on the use of plastics. Thus, there is an imminent need to think seriously about the transition towards a circular bioeconomy of innovative biobased materials with biodegradability potentials. This paper examines the driving forces behind the changes in food plastic packaging regimes and specifically seeks to understand how socio-technical configurations may influence niches to transition to a circular bioeconomy, particularly biobased biodegradable plastic materials. By employing a systematic review of the literature, we find that coordination with other back-end socio-technical systems that provide valorization of packaging waste is crucial to enable the transition. The literature indicates that one possible transition path is that the biobased biodegradable materials serve as “carriers of food waste”. The paper contributes to the discussion on the dynamics of food packaging in the transition to a bioeconomy viewed through the lenses of a socio-technical system (niche–regime–landscape), which continues to reinforce future actions, leading to better management of packaging end-of-life.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2023 PortugalAuthors: Yürümez, Yunus Emre; With the current advancements in the field of the circular economy the distinct advantages that it brings for food and beverage companies are pretty clear. Nonetheless, despite the increasing amount of literature concerning the broad concept of the circular economy and their many potential advantages there has been limited investigation into the particular techniques and methods that food and beverage corporations have implemented to incorporate circular economy principles in their operations. This encompasses methods of minimizing waste and emissions, as well as maximizing the utilization of resources such as water, energy, and materials. For this research, a multiple qualitative case method was used to gather data. Interviews were made with different food & beverage companies to understand to what extent they are familiar with CE and if they integrate these measures in their operations, as well as how they are making efforts to reduce emissions and waste effectively. Additionally, possible reasons for implementation barriers are analyzed accordingly.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Master thesis 2020 PortugalAuthors: Carvalho, Ana de Sousa Francisco; The circular economy (CE) refers to a model of production and consumption that is restorative and regenerative by nature. The strategy behind the circular business model relies on extending a product’s lifetime. The previous may be achieved through manufacturing of goods that are durable and simple to repair, reuse and replace its parts. In turn, the model translates into a reduction in resource consumption and waste production. Reuse consists of keeping materials in use for longer and, it may prove crucial behaviour in tackling the current waste and plastic pollution crisis. “Plastic trash has become so ubiquitous that it has prompted efforts to draft a global treaty negotiated by the United Nations (UN)”. The issue at hand warrants a solution which rethinks the packaging and the materials utilised. In light of the pressing nature of the underlying topic detailed above, the purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it explores the drivers and challenges of consumers’ purchase decisions with respect to reusing empty perfume bottles; in other words, refilling perfume bottles, in the United Kingdom (UK). Secondly, it addresses the underlying motivations, attitudes and trade-off choices towards environmentally friendly purchases which, in turn, allows to ascertain the most successful refillable perfume system for the UK market. This paper is relevant as it provides insights regarding the influence of consumers’ antecedents and trade-offs in the case of refillable perfume systems. Said insights allow to precict with greater accuracy consumer behaviours purchase decision. Primary data was collected through a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods, an online self-completed survey (N=257) and face to face, semi structured script, interviews (N=5), respectively. vi The present research revealed that, on the one hand, consumers are willing incorporate circular economy systems, such as reuse by means of refill of empty perfume containers. Perceived benefits include cost savings, waste reduction, convenience, ease and transparency. On the other hand, perceived barriers include logistical efforts, loss of flexibility, time consuming processes and low savings. Both need to be taken into consideration when designing the refill business model, in order to put in place a robust operation that will appeal to consumers. Considerando a natureza premente do tópico subjacente detalhado acima, o objective deste artigo é duplo.

To answer the research question, I adopted a qualitative research approach, utilized the ReSolve framework and conducted a comparative case study. I studied five wetsuit companies, operating on the European market and striving to implement sustainability into their core business strategy. Wetsuit brands face challenges and tensions in implementing full circular systems as recycling old wetsuit material into new fully-functioning wetsuits is not possible yet. The findings show that brands are individually responsible in implementing principles working towards circularity. The degree of engagement in establishing a product loop varies throughout the industry, as some brands lack solutions, where others have already established counteractions. This reveals potential to learn and grow from each other. However, the sector puts great effort into innovating sustainable methods and creating a positive impact even through small gestures - for instance by innovating alternative wetsuit components, using renewable energy sources, decreasing waste during the supply chain and establishing recycling mechanisms to turn old wetsuit material into products such as yoga mats, shoes or mulch mats for trees. Moreover, brands as well take actions on a socio-economic level by donating or supporting various projects. Generally seen, the water sports wear industry operates encouragingly on this matter, inviting other industries to take an example and follow.
