New actors and concepts are raising new challenges to ensure the security, safety, sustainability and stability of space operations. Initiatives on national and international level aim to tackle this issue through promotion of prevention, understanding the situation, active collision avoidance operations as well as active debris removal. To ensure autonomy and leadership in the field whilst reducing the dependability on U.S. SSA data, the EU started to work on an independent SSA/SST capability. EUSTM is an end-to end activity towards the definition of a future STM capability: • Counting on the main experts in all applicable domains within the team • Consulting the main stakeholders worldwide in relevant domains • Defining the needs in terms of organisation and responsibilities, technology, policy, laws, guidelines, best practices and standards • Elaborating detailed specs, a preliminary design, a reference roadmap and a ROM cost analysis • Developing an innovative collaborative platform for exchange of information inside the team and with external stakeholders • Creating a community of interest on STM be active beyond the duration of the project • Organising workshops and a dedicated European STM Conference anchored to a space event EUSTM is coordinated by GMV, the main European industrial player in the SSA/SST domain supported by European … • industrial players and research institutes from all across Europe • experts in SSA/SST-related technologies • current and future (NewSpace) users (EUTELSAT and many others) • experts in the policy (ESPI), governance & security (SatCen) and legal domains (IDEST), professionals for impact assessment and cost benefit analysis (PwC) and key actors in the air traffic management domain (ENAIRE) EUSTM is supported by 20+ additional stakeholders including operators, industry, emerging NewSpace players and institutions, as well as the Secure World Foundation.

The project aims to meet these needs by developing and industrializing next-generation semiconductor technologies (SiGe BiCMOS for ST, RF GaN for UMS) and the associated integrated circuit design and characterization environments. Innovative analog and digital RF integrated circuits will be designed with the technologies developed and integrated as ‘FEM’ modules of innovative telecommunications system demonstrators. New assembly techniques that can solve RF signal integrity and heat dissipation issues, or greatly simplify RF systems, will also be explored. Demonstrators of innovative telecommunications systems will be developed (10 demonstrators; by NOKIA, SAFRAN, SIAE, and other partners), to validate new semiconductor and assembly technologies, on use cases envisaged for wireless B5G/6G networks (more particularly for network access and network trunks), very high-speed optical networks, and Earth observation and satellite telecommunications. The SHIFT consortium brings together players covering the entire value chain of these telecommunications applications, from laboratories to manufacturers, thus guaranteeing the highest scientific level and the possibility of validating the work carried out on suitable demonstrators. Activities will include environmental and economic impact assessments.

The innovation comes from an hybrid solution of proven and tested technologies, in use for legacy solutions in order to ensure energy transmission on rotating parts. 3 different devices will be developed for the Main Rotor, the Lateral Rotor and the Drive shaft systems of the Fast Rotorcraft. For the developments, it is decisive to implement disruptive solutions for contactless and wireless instrumentation of rotary parts that will drastically improve reliability, availability and flexibility regarding legacy solutions. For an helicopter manufacturer, this may become a significant competitive advantage as rotors are the most critical parts of the aircraft. It will however, imply many modifications in the usual way to conceive solutions hence forcing to imagine an “unusual” instrumentation system. The HIRIS (Helicopter Innovative Rotating Instrumentation System) proposal offers answers to such challenge.

Operating a large-scale vehicle at low altitude, consistent with future European strategic needs, and embedding a set of critical technologies, the project will significantly boost the strategic launchers roadmap, enabling the vision of a future launch fleet improving by 50% space access costs and reducing environmental impacts. SALTO will hence act as a “stepping stone” towards reusability of strategic launchers in Europe which is one of the key leverages to reach such vision. Fully aligned with previous ESA-funded activities (e.g. Themis initial phase Program), SALTO focuses on - Technologies and building blocks maturation up to TRL5/6 for the first stage of a strategic launcher; - Subsystem/system tests with two low altitude system tests (“hop test”) campaigns. SALTO's methodology will combine robust system engineering with technology maturation activities and a stepped demonstration strategy to accelerate experimental learning through the implementation of the Agile methodology. The SALTO project will culminate in flight test campaigns to demonstrate and validate the technologies necessary for a reusable launch vehicle. SALTO will contribute to the cost reduction target for strategic launcher in Europe by addressing ~3/4 (in cost) of all technologies / operations involved in a future European reusable rocket stage. While Europe is currently lagging behind other global players when it comes to reusable launchers, SALTO will reinforce EU’s independent capacity to access space, secure autonomy of supply for critical technologies and equipment, and foster EU's space sector competitiveness. At the end of the project, lessons will be drawn regarding the maturity of the different technological bricks, TRL and readiness for flight tests. A roadmap to increase their maturity will be prepared in view of suborbital tests by 2025.
