    Sustainable management of the resource “Land” requires up-to date and detailed geoinformation for decision-makers. Well-educated land administration (LA) professionals are providing this information for the tasks of land management by using satellite images, photogrammetry, and geoinformation technologies (GIS).Li4LaM aims to improve knowledge, skills and competences of LA students on collecting, interpreting, and analysing geodata. Li4LaM develops and provides state-of-the-art teaching and learning materials for in total 12 existing modules of LA relevant study programs offered at four Ethiopian universities. For each of the Ethiopian partner universities also one new module (5 ECTS) is developed tailored to the specific needs of land management in their region, and one module (10 ECTS) is elaborated for Lifelong-Learning (LLL) courses aiming to upskill local LA experts.For all modules, learning and teaching material is prepared for being delivered as online courses as well as for on-site courses. European partners will use selected parts of the material.For the four ETH partner institutions, a LLL strategy is developed and a handbook for quality assurance and accreditation processes for LLL is elaborated.Ethiopian universities have a severe lack of textbooks. Li4LaM will bridge this gap as teaching and learning material is provided in an electronic format, enabling a broader access for Ethiopian students. Teaching videos, animations, recorded lectures, pdf-textbooks, etc. can be downloaded from Learning Management Systems, which are implemented by Li4LaM for all Ethiopian project partners.Li4LaM will enhance pedagogic and didactical skills as well as the competence to develop state-of-the art teaching and learning material for all project partners in general and for the Ethiopian partners in particular. European project members benefited from the pandemic situation of the last two years, as the pandemic forced them to adopt distance-learning techniques.

    its4land delivers an innovative suite of land tenure recording tools that responds to sub Saharan Africa’s immense challenge to rapidly and cheaply map millions of unrecognized land rights in the region. ICT innovation will play a key role. Existing approaches have failed: disputes abound, investment is impeded, and the community’s poorest lose out. its4land reinforces strategic collaboration between the EU and East Africa via a scalable and transferrable ICT solution. Established local, national, and international partnerships drive the project results beyond R&D into the commercial realm. its4land combines an innovation process with emerging geospatial technologies, including smart sketchmaps, UAVs, automated feature extraction, and geocloud services, to deliver land recording services that are end-user responsive, market driven, and fit-for-purpose. The transdisciplinary work also develops supportive models for governance, capacity development, and business capitalization. Gender sensitive analysis and design is also incorporated. Set in the East African development hotbeds of Rwanda, Kenya, and Ethiopia, its4land falls within TRL 5-7: 3 major phases host 8 work packages that enable contextualization, design, and eventual land sector transformation. In line with Living Labs thinking, localized pilots and demonstrations are embedded in the design process. The experienced consortium is multi-sectorial, multi-national, and multidisciplinary. It includes SMEs and researchers from 3 EU countries and 3 East African countries: the necessary complementary skills and expertise is delivered. Responses to the range of barriers are prepared: strong networks across East Africa are key in mitigation. The tailored project management plan ensures clear milestones and deliverables, and supports result dissemination and exploitation: specific work packages and roles focus on the latter.

    In this project, eight universities in 4 countries in Africa (Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Mozambique) will benefit and collaborate with two universities in EU (Italy, Sweden) towards modernization of courses and programs in the energy sector, with emphasize upon the general perspectives of circular economy towards energy sustainability. The collaboration is inspired by two earlier successful Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education. It will re-use both the framework and learning material developed from these projects while developing and implementing specific new courses and programs adapted for the local conditions in the partner countries.The courses and programs to be developed will enhance the modernization process of the partner universities by introducing a student-centered flipped classroom approach in which innovation and entrepreneurship takes a predominant role. All material is developed in digital online format and can as such be read also in remote areas, both as part of a formal academic study program and as stand-alone modules for individual learning journeys. Learning resources and courses will be shared between the partners throughout the project and common implementation will be performed. Business cases and global challenges related to the UN Sustainability Goals, and specifically adapted towards global greenhouse gas mitigation, are introduced in the modernized curricula. A university-wide “Challenge” course will be installed in each partner HEI such that students from different disciplines can come together within, as well as between, university. At the end of the project the partner universities will have clearly demonstrated, in a measurable and scalable way, that it is possible to collaborate on educational material in the energy sector in a global perspective, to co-create and re-use material from other countries, improve the material, adapt it to local conditions and create an international collaboration.

    The 21st century witnesses increased incidence of epidemics (Zika, dengue, Ebola, SARS), with as latest highlight the recent COVID-19. Following the outbreak of several infectious diseases during the last few decade, the need for generating real-time pathogen genomic data for public health action has become more important than ever. In the African context, infrastructure, human resource capability, data analysis, including bioinformatics, lack of linkage between clinical, epidemiological, and pathogen genomic data as well the interaction between clinicians, researchers and decision makers are some of the major challenges. The aim of the EpiGen project is to build a capacity for integrated pathogen genomic surveillance for informed public health decision process. The overarching specific objectives include strengthening collection and analysis of clinical and epidemiological data, enhancing the capacity and capability for pathogen genomic sequencing, including strengthening the laboratory infrastructure, human work force, pathogen genomic data analysis, and the integration of metadata with genomic data, developing and implementing innovative digital diagnostic platforms, creating semi-real time mobile phone applications for policy decisions, and promoting communities of practice and knowledge exchange through fostering African collaboration and networking in the domain of pathogen genomic surveillance for infectious diseases. EpiGen project’s multi-disciplinary consortium is drawn from several institutions from Ethiopia engaged in National Public Health Programs, and EU partners (The Netherlands, Spain and Germany). Overall, the model approach proposed by EpiGen will enhance Ethiopia’s national effort in mitigating the threat of infectious diseases. The implementation of a national genomic-informed surveillance for infectious diseases will play significant public health role towards contributing to disease prevention and control programmes in Ethiopia and beyond.

    Improving access to safe, nutritious food across Africa in a socioeconomically and environmentally sustainable and resilient manner is a major systemic challenge. In order to overcome the diverse challenges facing African agri-food systems, exacerbated by climate change and rapid population growth, it is essential to simultaneously raise consumer awareness about healthy nutrition, whilst enhancing the capacity of producers and food chain actors to deliver diverse, nutritious, high quality, affordable foodstuffs. The approach used in HealthyFoodAfrica is founded on five pillars: a) ten localised, context-specific Food System Labs for experimentation and innovation in regions with diverse production systems and challenges (Ghana, Benin, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya & Zambia); b) five thematic work packages for holistically addressing food system challenges (nutrition & consumption; sustainable production; postharvest; food safety; value chain governance; novel products & processes); c) interdisciplinary, multi-actor, adaptive co-management, engaging farmers (incl. smallholders, aquafarmers, SMEs, women & youth), food processors/packagers, retailers (incl. street vendors), consumers, NGOs, scientists, decision-/policymakers; d) the use of a Theory of Change framework for transformational impact; e) dedicated dissemination, capacity building and exploitation activities for wider and lasting impacts. HealthyFoodAfrica will innovate and test technologies, practices and governance arrangements, contributing to: - More sustainable, resilient and healthy food systems for all; - Significant reduction of malnutrition (particularly children within the first 1,000 days of life); - Empowerment of producers; - SME growth; - Market opportunities (internal/export); - Reduced wastage; - Crisis situation food strategies; - 11 UN SDGs; - Partnership on FNSSA; and - Piloting of innovations with technological or societal readiness levels or general maturity levels up to TRL/SRL/GML 7.
