Modern advanced and high value fuel cell systems are monitored by multiple embedded sensors which transmit a large amount of data every few seconds. Unfortunately, service engineers are still faced with the challenging task of identifying the causes of a failure by manually investigating not only the streaming sensor data but also a wide range of structured, semi-structured and unstructured monitoring data. At the same time, they are required to have a thorough knowledge of the full operating mechanism. Our overarching aim is to utilise next generation deep learning and knowledge technology paradigms (i.e. ontology-based systems, knowledge-graph based systems) to represent this monitoring knowledge in a human and machine processible form such that decision-making processes can be automated and deeper engineering insights can be obtained. To achieve this, we will implement a radically cross-disciplinary methodological approach, by developing new spatio-temporal knowledge representations and reasoning and instilling them with natural language processing techniques. This will result in a novel paradigm for truly intelligent cyber physical systems. The QuAre paradigm will be put to test and fine tuned on the diagnosis and prognosis of polymer electrolyte fuel cell systems. On the training side, this project is designed to instill the applicant with a niche set of core skills on question answering over knowledge graph embeddings, knowledge management retrieval, and natural language generation; these will position the researcher at the fore-front of intelligent knowledge representation and establish her as a leading researcher in the field of question answering. The project is further designed to provide the researcher with cutting edge teaching, leadership, and communication skills so that by the end of this project she will be ready to pursue her first permanent academic position.

The project was aiming at the strengthening of the cooperation of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) with Universities of the Mediterranean and the Balkan area as well as the Middle East and the Black Sea area, according to the University's Erasmus+ policy statement. The initially approved mobility of 2 students and 24 staff members for teaching was partly implemented (2 students and 10 professors moved to partner Universities). This cooperation was very important both for the NKUA and the partner Institutions and it will contribute to further scientific cooperation and mobility of students and members of teaching staff.

The planned activities included three (3) seminars per academic year (2017-18; 2018-19; 2019-20) on the following topics: (i) The EU, Turkey, and the East Mediterranean, (ii) EU Refugee and Asylum Law and Policy, (iii) The Management of the EU’s External Borders) were organized. The curricula of the seminars were designed taking into account adult education methodologies (debating, case studies, group projects, brainstorming) as well as the innovative hands-on training approach, grounded on a policy-oriented spirit, multidisciplinary synergies (with other universities, academic institutions, research centres) and openness to civil society. Synergies were envisaged with the European Commission Representation in Athens, EASO and FRONTEX, as well as with the specialized inter-governmental organization European Public Law Organization (EPLO). In addition to the seminars, the planned activities included also the organization of three (3) annual debate and research-oriented workshops dealing in depth with the following issues: a) contemporary immigration to Greece, b) the management of the EU’s external sea borders (including case studies, such as the Aegean, etc.), and c) the impact of migration on the local economies, in particular on tourism. Moreover, in the framework of the project, the Centre intended to produce a Policy Report on European Governance of Migration with the contribution of academics, practitioners, local and regional authorities, civil society actors, and others. The Report (in Greek with English summary) will be presented widely to the academic community, the civil society and the media with the aim to stimulating academic and public debate on feasible proposals for the governance of migration with a focus on emerging responses to irregular migration and to providing a concrete paradigm for the sound contribution of the European South to the overall European external border management policies. Finally, the Centre planned to occasionally produce nine Policy Papers on specific issues of the EU governance of migration in the current political, economic and social environment in the EU, its members and the countries of origin of migration. These will be prepared by researchers and other experts, while the best qualified participants in the project’s seminars and workshops will also be tasked with the generation of a number of Policy Papers to address specific issues within the project’s scope.
