It is framed within the innovation Program 4 (IP4), which addresses “IT solutions for attractive Railway services”. MaaSive continues and complements the work accomplished within previous projects, ATTRACkTIVE and CO-ACTIVE, in the areas of travel shopping, trip tracking, booking and ticketing, and the development of a travel companion. The project not only will enhance and provide extra functionalities to the existing IP4 ecosystem, but also makes emphasis in the compatibility of this ecosystem with the Mobility as a Service approach.

ExtenSive provides complementary and continuous solutions already started within previous projects, MaaSive, ATTRACkTIVE and CO-ACTIVE, to enhance traveller experience and improve the travel services (in the areas of travel shopping, trip tracking, booking and ticketing) and deal with Software as a Service approach. ExtenSive will improve and enhance the current functionalities of IP4 and create synergies with the other S2R IPs to enhance services for users and operators and facilitate information flow among IP4 services and other railway systems.

Consequently, stations have a decisive impact on their urban surroundings as places of everyday life, affecting all stakeholders including citizens and the environment. The central ambition of RAIL4CITIES is to develop a new operational, readily available and highly applicable model of stations (SCP model), combined with a common European methodology and tool for its effective implementation. The project takes inter-dependent impediments (profit-orientated business model, complex web of agents and stakeholders, policy gaps) into account and provides decision makers with the tools to transform stations into promoters of sustainable cities. The model will be applied to 5 living labs addressing the stations’ transformation into hubs of green and active mobility (FR), energy hubs (IT), towards Transit Oriented Development (DE), into a socially-inclusive services hub with using Nature Based Solutions (PL) and services hubs enabling the 15-minute city and circular economy (BE). This will be enhanced by 3 case-studies from the high-speed rail line from Lisbon to Oporto (PT) to study the resilience of infrastructures for both adaptation of spaces to new future uses, and adaptation to climate-change issues and health crises. With 14 partners from 7 European countries, further supported by 9 institutions through letters of support, the RAIL4CITIES consortium and ecosystem integrates the relevant stakeholders from universities, industry, government and the public, and is therefore in the position to design, evaluate and publish a EU-wide model for transforming existing stations or designing new ones into socio-technical systems operating as city’s greening engines for the surrounding environment, and new urban hubs aggregating multiple services for the users and its citizens

Therefore, they have an essential function as an environmentally friendly mode of transport. In addition is as well essential their link to other public transport services (e.g. bus) and to first and last mile services, such as bikesharing, cycling, walking or driving to get from/to stations to remote locations. Unfortunately, many of these routes were abandoned in the past - mainly due to high costs. Therefore, these rail lines need to be revitalized or even renewed to make them economically, socially and environmentally sustainable and to meet current customer needs and challenges The overall objectives of the FutuRe project are to ensure the long-term viability of the regional railway by reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO), while ensuring high service quality and operational reliability. It also aims to increase customer satisfaction and to make rail an attractive and preferred mode of transport. Therefore, the main objectives of FutuRe are: lowering CAPEX system costs, increasing productivity by lowering OPEX (unit costs per train kilometre), and improving customer satisfaction. These goals are to be achieved through a concept tailored to regional railways but transferable across Europe, encompassing digitalisation, automation and the use of common and new technologies for signalling and track components, rolling stock and customer information. Cost drivers such as infrastructure and energy components, e.g. trackside train detection (axle counters, etc.) and level crossing control systems, will be replaced by less costly wireless and energy-autonomous components. In addition, a modular and standardised vehicle concept specifically tailored to the requirements of regional lines becomes needed, as well as a range of attractive services.

IN2STEMPO aligns with the Shift2Rail objectives and aims to reduce lifecycle costs, improve reliability and punctuality, whilst increasing capacity, enhancing interoperability and improving the customer experience. The IN2STEMPO Smart Power Supply activities seek to contribute to the development of a railway smart grid based on the development of an unique railway power grid in an interconnected system. This new railway network will integrate smart metering, innovative power electronic components, energy management and energy storage systems. This new concept will lead to improved and optimised train traffic, energy costs, and energy supply security for the railway system. In parallel it will allow for optimised solutions to be developed through optimising investment, operation costs and maintenance. The IN2STEMPO Smart Metering research activities will realise a non-intrusive smart metering sensor network at a railway system level. It will demonstrate an open system and interface for data collection, aggregation and analysis at an open source ODM (Operational Data Management) level. The applications will exploit the energy analysis process with the aim of enhancing energy decision-making and line operation patterns. Other possible applications include preventative maintenance plans, asset management and Life Cycle Cost dashboards. The IN2STEMPO Future Stations activities are aimed at improving the customer experience and safety at stations, resulting in a better passenger experience for customers using the railway. Research will be focussed on improving crowd management in high capacity stations, station design and components, accessibility to trains and new ticketing technologies.
