Their true potential lies in generalizing across diverse domains and modalities, a largely untapped frontier. DVPS advances this frontier by focusing on multimodal foundation models (MMFM), aiming to harness their capabilities across various application domains. DVPS emphasizes three core benefits of MMFM: label efficiency, compute reusability, and engineering efficiency. However, achieving these benefits in multimodal settings presents challenges such as modality-specific architecture and cross-modal alignment. To overcome these, DVPS aims to develop generalizable methods that work across diverse modalities and domains, creating a unified framework for MMFM development and integrating new modalities into existing models. The project focuses on generating foundational knowledge, delivering tested methods, and creating algorithms to expand MMFM capabilities across domains like cardiology, geo-intelligence, and language communication. DVPS also includes two "surprise domains" to drive innovation by challenging initial assumptions. Key objectives include the development of AutoDVPS, a toolkit for automated MMFM design, and the creation of DVPSBench, a benchmarking suite for evaluating MMFM across tasks and domains. DVPS aims to foster a European ecosystem for MMFM research, promoting transparency, fairness, and ethical compliance in line with European values. Through collaboration and open-source contributions, DVPS seeks to standardize and advance MMFM as a scientifically rigorous discipline.

This integration and management system (the Hub) builds on mature processes, policies and tools from the leading European federated e-Infrastructures to cover the whole life-cycle of services, from planning to delivery. The Hub aggregates services from local, regional and national e-Infrastructures in Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada and South America. The Hub acts as a single contact point for researchers and innovators to discover, access, use and reuse a broad spectrum of resources for advanced data-driven research. Through the virtual access mechanism, more scientific communities and users have access to services supporting their scientific discovery and collaboration across disciplinary and geographical boundaries. The project also improves skills and knowledge among researchers and service operators by delivering specialised trainings and by establishing competence centres to co-create solutions with the users. In the area of engagement with the private sector, the project creates a Joint Digital Innovation Hub that stimulates an ecosystem of industry/SMEs, service providers and researchers to support business pilots, market take-up and commercial boost strategies. EOSC-hub builds on existing technology already at TRL 8 and addresses the need for interoperability by promoting the adoption of open standards and protocols. By mobilizing e-Infrastructures comprising more than 300 data centres worldwide and 18 pan-European infrastructures, this project is a ground-breaking milestone for the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud.

The full range of both generic and ES data management specific services provided by EVER-EST will facilitate the dynamic approach to collaborative working and research. Scientist will be able to discover, access, process, share and interoperate heterogeneous data, algorithms, results and experiences within and across their communities, including those in domains beyond Earth Science. Data providers will be able to monitor users experience and collect feedback through the VRE, improving their capacity to adapt to end-user needs offering solutions to unlock scientist potentials and creativity. EVER-EST e-infrastructure will be validated by four Virtual Research Communities (VRC) covering different multidisciplinary working ES domains: ranging from Sea Monitoring, to Natural Hazards (floods, weather, wildfires), Land Monitoring and Risk Management (volcanoes and seismic). Each of these VRC will use the VRE according to its own specific requirements for data, software, best practices and community engagement. The VRE will leverage on the results of several FP7 projects which have produced state-of-the-art technologies for scientific data management and curation. Such capabilities will be enriched during the EVER-EST project using the output of a second group of FP7 initiatives providing models, techniques and tools for the preservation of scientific methods and their implementation in computational forms such as scientific workflows. EVER-EST will implement solutions for data publication, citation and trust. EVER-EST will provide the means to climb up existing peaks and obstacles to information sharing in Earth Science allowing research teams to collaboratively collect, manipulate and share resources, allowing creation of new knowledge.

It capitalizes on the explosion of new data provided by many different earth sources, advanced computing infrastructures (cloud computing, HPC, Internet of Things, Big Data, social networking, and more) in an inclusive, virtual/augmented, and engaging fashion to address all Earth Data challenges. It will contribute towards a sustainable ocean economy as defined by the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Ocean, a hub for global, multistakeholder co-operation. The ILIAD DTO will fuse a large volume of diverse data, in a semantically rich and data agnostic approach to enable simultaneous communication with real world systems and models. Ontologies and a standard style-layered descriptor will facilitate semantic information and intuitive discovery of underlying information and knowledge to provide a seamless experience. The combination of geovisualisation, immersive visualization and virtual or augmented reality allows users to explore, synthesize, present, and analyze the underlying geospatial data in an interactive manner. The enabling technology of the ILIAD DTO will contribute to the implementation of the EU?s Green Deal and Digital Strategy and to the achievement of the UN Ocean Decade's outcomes and Sustainable Development Goals. To realize its potential, ILIAD DTO will follow the System of Systems approach, integrating all existing EU Earth Observing and Modelling Digital Infrastructures and Facilities To promote additional applications through ILIAD DTO, the partners will create the ILIAD Marketplace. Like an app store, providers will use the ILIAD Marketplace to distribute apps, plug-ins, interfaces, raw data, citizen science data, synthesized information, and value-adding services derived from the ILIAD DTO.
