These houses are over 200 years old and still standing in their original building sites. The museum tells the story of pre-industrial urban craftsmanship. The Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum was opened to the public on 29th June 1940. The museum grounds consist of 14 courtyards and their buildings with approximately 80 furnished interiors.Turku Museum Centre actively develops its museums to better and update the customer experience. Luostarinmäki development project 2018-2021 strives to follow the vision and idea behind the Museum Centre of Turku: provide various ways of experiencing Turku and find new ways of being a museum. Luostarinmäki is going through a renewal of it's concept. The project endeavors to find new innovation, trends and collegial support from the international museum field.Project will make a job shadowing period in one of the Great Britain's most popular museum destinations, Beamish Museum near Stanley. Beamish Museum is an open air museum telling the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s & 1940s. Because of its long history and experience, popularity and similar approach, Beamish Museum is a great learning platform for the Luostarimäki project. Beamish Museum also has a large scale development project in process 2017-2021 that is of great interest for the Luostarinmäki team. Open air museums in Great Britain are known for their progressive work with volunteers and stakeholders as well as engaging visitors and these are fields that coincide with Luostarinmäki's development strategies.Participants are museum specialists in their own fields which include museum pedagogy, cultural heritage, collections, conservation, customer services and museum development. Participants are members of the Luostarinmäki development team and a responsible for their own special fields. Participants will perform the job shadowing period in two parts that include studying the target as a group during one day and focusing on ones specialty individually during two days. This method gives possibility to analyze the target as a group with different viewpoints offering larger perspective. It also functions as an educational tool deepening the participants knowledge of their special fields and encourages to build lasting relationships with English colleagues.Projects aims are to support individual learning, increase competence of the organization and find new ways to develop Luostarinmäki museum. International networking supports collaboration and exchange of knowledge between open air museums at large. All these aspects influence directly in the high-quality customer experience that Luostarinmäki strives to offer and develop further in the future.
