The InCUBE Suite, integrates digital tools across all 4 pillars, enables for seamless coordination of different renovation phases while leveraging data streaming from multiple interoperable sources to accommodate tenants’ comfort and render buildings active energy nodes in the synergetic energy networks paradigm of the future. Solutions will be validated in 3 large-scale demo sites (19,100 m2, >600 residents) in 3 countries (IT, ES, NL), including a cultural heritage building. Key expected outcomes include among others: Reduction of waste streams and time needed on-site by >35%, renovation cost reduction by >30%, reduction of working time with hazardous activities by >50%, energy savings >6GWh/y (78%), GHG reductions >1,980 tCO2eq/y, achieving an energy performance gap between as-built and as-designed 2,000 users; all while accounting for social inclusion, upskilling and enhancement of women’s role in the construction industry.

The breakthrough targeted by BRAIN-IoT is to establish a framework and methodology supporting smart cooperative behaviour in fully de-centralized, composable and dynamic federations of heterogeneous IoT platforms. BRAIN-IoT tackles future business-critical and privacy-sensitive IoT scenarios subject to strict dependability requirements. In this complex setting, BRAIN-IoT enables smart autonomous behaviour in IoT scenarios involving heterogeneous sensors and actuators autonomously cooperating in complex, dynamic tasks. This is done by employing highly dynamic federations of heterogeneous IoT platforms able to support secure and scalable operations for future IoT use cases, backed by an open decentralized marketplace of IoT platform and smart features, supporting runtime deployment and reconfiguration. Open semantic models are used to enforce interoperable operations and exchange of data and control features, supported by model-based development tools to ease prototyping and integration of interoperable solutions. Overall, secure operations are guaranteed by a consistent framework providing AAA features in highly dynamic, distributed IoT scenarios, joint with solutions to embed privacy awareness and control features. The viability of the proposed approaches is demonstrated in two futuristic usage scenarios, namely Service Robotics and Critical Infrastructure Management, as well as through a series of proof-of-concept demonstrations in collaboration with on-going IoT large-scale pilot initiatives.

However, they come with significant data management challenges. According to IDC, the total amount of data generated only by connected devices will exceed 40 trillion gigabytes by 2025. In most of the current systems, data storage and analysis happen on centralized locations on the cloud. This is pushing network capacity to its limits. Furthermore, centralized storage and processing lead to single point of failure situations, which are critically inefficient in case of disasters and crisis. Our world is continuously living natural disasters, health crisis, climate change and security threats that show the importance of resilient and energy-efficient information systems. COGNIFOG targets those challenges and proposes to build a Cognitive Fog Framework to: (i) reduce energy consumption and latency in next generation IT systems by reducing the network traffic, by analysing data at the edge in a distributed manner, closer to where they are generated, rather than routing them through the communication networks to a data center; (ii) reduce OPEX and faster service provisioning by providing a cognitive, self-adaptive framework with minimum or no human intervention, with dynamic provisioning of computing, storage and networking resources along the far-edge-to-edge-to-cloud path; (iii) ensure European leadership by providing an open interoperable framework with open APIs for application developers to rapidly create and deploy applications benefiting the edge-cloud continuum on top of heterogenous IoT/IT systems. COGNIFOG will validate project results in three representative application domains: critical collaboration missions, smart health and smart industry. With a consortium of 12 European partners, leaders in their domains, COGNIFOG will be a cornerstone in the cognitive fog computing domain

The primary objective is to advance inclusive metropolitan planning, a goal that will be realized through the creation of a toolkit for local and regional authorities. The effectiveness of this toolkit will be demonstrated with the elaboration of five roadmaps for digital or climate transition in different cities with diverse backgrounds, accompanied by the formulation of policy recommendations to amplify its impact. To achieve these ambitious objectives, a robust consortium, boasting diverse expertise in urban planning, co-creation, and living lab methodologies, has been assembled. Partners will collaborate closely to empower local and regional authorities with the necessary skills to implement these methodologies effectively. Capacity building efforts will extend to replication and exploitation partners, leveraging their extensive networks to disseminate these methodologies globally and assist other international actors in navigating similar transitions. The project will also contribute to the academic discourse by publishing a set of recommendations and articles, further expanding its impact. MICAD's significant contribution lies in fostering international cooperation among local, regional, and international actors. Through this collaboration, the project aims to identify the risks and opportunities associated with implementing inclusive and participatory planning processes. The study and application of community-held innovative processes will provide insights into the most effective and engaging participatory policy-making strategies. The results of these studies will be shared, leading to the proposal of solution models that can be adapted to various contexts.

It will consolidate Europe’s leading position in the global IoT industry by fostering a symbiotic ecosystem of farmers, food industry, technology providers and research institutes. The IoF2020 consortium of 73 partners, led by Wageningen UR and other core partners of previous key projects such as FIWARE and IoT-A, will leverage the ecosystem and architecture that was established in those projects. The heart of the project is formed by 19 use cases grouped in 5 trials with end users from the Arable, Dairy, Fruits, Vegetables and Meat verticals and IoT integrators that will demonstrate the business case of innovative IoT solutions for a large number of application areas. A lean multi-actor approach focusing on user acceptability, stakeholder engagement and sustainable business models will boost technology and market readiness levels and bring end user adoption to the next stage. This development will be enhanced by an open IoT architecture and infrastructure of reusable components based on existing standards and a security and privacy framework. Anticipating vast technological developments and emerging challenges for farming and food, the 4-year project stays agile through dynamic budgeting and adaptive decision-making by an implementation board of representatives from key user organizations. A 6 M€ mid-term open call will allow for testing intermediate results and extending the project with technical solutions and test sites. A coherent dissemination strategy for use case products and project learnings supported by leading user organizations will ensure a high market visibility and an increased learning curve. Thus IoF2020 will pave the way for data-driven farming, autonomous operations, virtual food chains and personalized nutrition for European citizens.
