"<< Objectives >>We wanted to realise this project, because both locally (in Jurmala) and globally we had observed that while young people, compared to other generations, are more understanding, among young people, especially in schools, peer-bullying and discriminatory behaviour remain a problem. Representatives of different cultures come to Latvia as well as other European countries, and for part of society it is not easy to accept changes. We wanted the young generation, which is shaping the future of Europe, to be able to provide a friendly social environment to representatives of various social and cultural groups. Many young people still face different forms of discrimination, stigma and hate crimes, and the new migration phenomenon has brought together a number of inclusive and social challenges. It was therefore important for us to provide space and opportunity to promote dialogue and social cohesion, as well as easy access to understandable and youth-friendly information. With this project, we wanted to create a safe space where project participants could discuss, learn from each other and find answers to questions about interpersonal communication, explore where discriminatory attitudes arise and how to prevent them, improve their social and personal skills, enable them to self-express and share their competencies with other young people through the use of such creative tools such as theatre and graphic designs. We based the project on values such as social equality, respect for human rights, active civil participation, international dialogue, mobility, information and constructive dialogue, which are also fundamental values for the Erasmus + programme. The main aim of the project was to promote young people's awareness of the importance of developing interpersonal skills in the prevention of discrimination by using non formal education and theatrical methods. Our objectives were:- developing competencies about communication with others in young people;- learning to recognise social psychological processes that affect people's interaction, such as first impressions, stereotypes and prejudices, social perceptions, communication barriers, etc.;- ensuring that young people are able to recognise and report hate speech and discrimination;- to learn and teach participants the types and characteristics of discrimination;- ensuring that young people are able to engage in a dignified, tolerant and non-violent dialogue and are courageous to talk to their peers about “difficult” topics, about values and equality;- Ensuring a secure environment for the development of interpersonal skills for 28 young people;- provide young people with opportunities to develop skills, such as argument skills, self-assurance, active listening, problem solving, verbal and non-verbal communication, critical thinking, etc. during youth exchange activities;- produce at least 5 information materials, including information on the characteristics of discrimination, social psychological processes, as well as recommendations for preventing discrimination and hate speech, in an accessible form for young people;- promoting self-awareness, self-confidence, courage to express and stand for their rights and support those who need it;- promote dialogue between at least 5 cultural representatives and different social groups, including socially active youth leaders and young people with fewer opportunities.<< Implementation >>Within the project were implemented 2 mobility activities (advanced planning visit and youth exchange), online meetings between partner organisations and dissemination activities. The advanced planning visit (IPV) took place in March 2020, just 2 days before the announcement of the global pandemic. The visit was attended by group leaders from 5 national groups - Latvia, Italy, Hungary, Portugal and Lithuania and one of the initial members of 3 national groups. The APV participants took note of the future plan of the project, roles and responsibilities, discussed key issues relating to the safety, health, intercultural interaction, protection, needs, and the responsibility and involvement of each partner in the implementation of the programme. The Youth exchange activity was carried out on 29 May - 6 June 2022 following a 2-year constant replanning (initially scheduled to take place in April 2020). In view of the difficulties posed by the pandemic, 2 partners withdrew their participation in the second activity of the project due to lack of capacity, one of the partner organizations was replaced. As a result, a total of 20 participants participated in the exchange: young people aged 16 to 30, including young people with fewer opportunities, socially excluded young people and group leaders/ facilitators from 4 partner countries (Latvia, Italy, Bulgaria and Lithuania). In order to find effective solutions to the social challenges addressed in the project, 2 target groups were involved:1) Young leaders who are prepared to disseminate the knowledge acquired by the project in their local reality, to support and motivate young people, including project participants, to actively participate in public life, are prepared to improve conditions and inform the rest of the public how to promote inclusion and combat discriminatory behaviour.2) Young people with fewer opportunities experiencing discrimination/social exclusion, or who are at risk of exclusion, for whom participation in society is difficult. The project involved young people with fewer opportunities arising from various factors such as economic, social and geographical barriers, cultural differences, learning difficulties and different capabilities. In the exchange activity, participants discussed and shared experience on the impact of discrimination on communication and on ways of reducing it in their local community. Project activities involved both non-formal education and experiential education methods and more specific theatrical methods, such as improvisational theater, theater of the oppressed, including forum theater methods. Both during and after the mobility activities, participants shared the project's findings and results online - in their or their organization’s social media accounts, and carried out dissemination activities - some young people chose to share the visual materials they created and use them when sharing their experience in the project to their peers in their local reality, others shared their gained skills in creating Forum theater performance with the organization's representatives.<< Results >>The youth exchange has boosted young peoples’ self-awareness, confidence, courage to speak up and stand up for their rights, to recognise discriminatory practices and to support those in need. The project activities and the non-formal learning methods used contributed to the personal development of the participants, especially young people with limited opportunities, by improving their social and interpersonal skills. Through the project’s activities we have encouraged young people to communicate with each other, have made young people with limited opportunities and/or no previous experience in such activities more involved in social life, in non-formal education to prevent the risks of social exclusion. After the youth exchange, participants can now serve as examples of good practice in their local communities - they are able to engage in respectful, tolerant and non-violent dialogue, able and courageous to talk to their peers about ""difficult"" topics, to stand up for their values and equality.By participating in the project activities and producing the project's outcome materials, participants have learnt how to work in a multicultural team, the specifics of communication with people from other cultures, the division of responsibilities, taking responsibility and initiative. All participants learnt various theatre techniques, IT & visual production skills, but the group leaders now know how to use them in activities with young people at local level and are aware of the causes of discrimination and social exclusion. The project promoted the exchange of experience, competence development and cooperation between the project partner organisations. The project produced information materials in English on the signs of discrimination and recommendations for the prevention of discrimination and hate speech, as well as a methodology for the production of a forum theatre performance on the topics covered by the project, which organisations and youth professionals will be able to use in their work with young people in the future. On international level, the project fostered friendship and cooperation between national youth groups, initiated new projects and facilitated the exchange of experience between partner organisations in working with young people, especially young people with fewer opportunities. We hope that this project helped the participating organisations to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic and served as a stepping stone to continue building cooperation with other organisations at both national and international level."
