The main idea behind the conception of the TwinERGY project lies on the interest of the project partners to exploit the new business opportunities that project implementation delivers and increase the relevance of the DR optimization tools and strategies in the new generation of energy management systems. By coupling mature practice for citizen engagement with service innovation through the lenses of public value, TwinERGY will ensure that a wide range of interests and especially of consumers/prosumers will be represented and supported in the energy marketplace. In this context, TwinERGY will develop, configure and integrate an innovative suite of tools, services and applications for consumers, enabling increase of awareness and knowledge about consumption patterns, energy behaviours, generation/ demand forecasts and increase of local intelligence via properly established Digital Twin-based Consumer-Centric Energy Management and Control Decision Support mechanisms that locally optimize demand response. Key use cases will be trialed across 4 pilot regions making use of cutting-edge methods and tools. Special focus is given on standardization and policy & market reform as key enablers for the successful commercialization of the TwinERGY results. Additional attention is given in establishing knowledge transfer and exchange synergies with similar projects listed under the BRIDGE Initiative, while explicit focus will be given on the establishment of close collaboration with the projects funded under the LC-SC3-ES-5-2018 topic, to further reinforce and catalyze collaborative advancements in research, innovation, regulatory and market issues around Demand Response, RES Integration and Consumer Engagement.

V2Market puts together all the relevant actors in the value chain to work on the definition of the role and the contractual arrangements of a new business case, the aggregator, and its different possibilities with the other key stakeholders: the EV owners, and the flexibility buyers (DSO, TSO, BRP). V2Market will tackle energy efficiency at different levels: - Efficiency at the system level, by providing flexibility services to the grid. - Efficiency at the building/end user level, by optimising energy management thanks to the incorporation of the EV battery, which will also facilitate an optimisation of the energy produced by local RES. - Efficiency resulting from the substitution of older fossil-fuel based vehicles for electric vehicles. - It will make the EV battery an independent asset (as a major cost item that needs to be managed separately). This will result in measurable energy savings and performance improvements for the overall energy system. To respond to these EE needs, V2Market will develop a comprehensive business case for aggregators based on two types of service: A – Provision of ancillary services to the grid (frequency regulation, spinning reserves, peak shifting). B – Integration of flexibility services with EE at buildings’ level. V2Market will help the aggregator to develop its business model, and use big data to tailor its services to the patterns of its pool of EV owners. This is intended to consolidate a more predictable pool of EV batteries, which can be useful to develop also contractual arrangements with the flexibility buyers and provide stability to all the transactions within the value chain.

Two major challenges hinder progress: grid operators lack the tools to manage distributed energy resources effectively, and citizens are not equipped to effectively participate in energy markets, particularly in peer-to-peer trading, which would foster individual investment in DERs. While the EU has established a legal framework for energy communities, its implementation has been restrictive, leading to energy communities based on predetermined, community-level prices and effectively peer-to-market rather than true P2P trading. The INTELLIGENT project will provide advanced P2P technology and demonstrate its benefits in 4 diverse EU communities to encourage regulators in EU member states to empower more advanced local energy sharing and trading. INTELLIGENT’s comprehensive P2P trading infrastructure includes interoperable decentralised energy exchange components, secure data exchange, and optimised trading and flexibility management for citizens and grid operators. These tools will be open source and protocol and regulation-agnostic, customisable for specific market requirements. The project leverages and extends the capabilities of the GSY DEX, an open-source P2P exchange software, which employs blockchain technology to enable grid-aware, secure, and automated exchange while fully accounting for network constraints. Innovations centres on a bottom-up, asset-based energy market design with sophisticated, AI/ML and blockchain-powered trading and flexibility mechanisms, supported by dynamic grid fee models and interoperability with grid operators, asset management and other related services. . INTELLIGENT's goal is to advance P2P energy trading technology, making it more accessible, secure, and efficient to optimise the economic and environmental benefits for citizens, while supporting grid operators to better address grid stability and congestion management.

FEDECOM pursues the idea of electricity becoming the leading energy carrier, with power grids as the backbone for the decarbonisation of all energy sectors and aggregators as the cornerstone enabler of the potential exploitation. FEDECOM adopts and maximizes the potential synergies of two complementary deployment strategies: (i) direct electrification (e.g. via demand electrification), and (ii) indirect electrification (with power-to-X technology). FEDECOM will deliver a scalable and adaptable cloud-based platform composed of analytical, modelling and optimization services for planning, supervision and control of integrated local energy systems (power, gas, heating and cooling, industry, electric and hydrogen mobility). Optimized operations of the integrated systems will be demonstrated as part of hybrid RES/storage infrastructures, while enabling a holistic cooperative demand response (DR) strategy across federation of energy communities. With a concept of federated energy communities, FEDECOM unlocks the flexibility potential, enable energy exchange, and provide coordinated actions across near and remote sites, while maximizing the positive impact on grid transmission level. FEDECOM’s integrated package will be verified on three real large-scale pilots, each composed of multiple (federated) demo sites (communities): Spanish Virtual Green H2 Federation, Swiss Residential Hydropower Federation and BENElux cross-country e-Mobility Federation. After FEDECOM, local energy communities and service providers will be fully trained and upskilled via dissemination and engagement activities to take full ownership of FEDECOM solution and its business ecosystem.

However, realizing these benefits requires addressing challenges such as ensuring end-users' adoption of digital technologies, addressing societal acceptance issues, engaging communities effectively, and ensuring decentralization and data sovereignty . Additionally, an integrated framework allowing effective data integration across the energy value chain also including data from other sectors is required. To address these challenges, CELINE introduces an innovative framework aimed at promoting the widespread adoption of digital technologies within the energy sector, fostering seamless interaction and collaboration among energy stakeholders. It focuses on facilitating the adoption of localized community-based and digital-driven energy innovations, which are user-centric, community-based, and tailored to address the needs of specific geographical areas or communities. CELINE will conceptualize, co-design, develop, and demonstrate an open-source cross-sector data-driven Digital Ecosystem and Toolbox, comprising a Digital Twin of community energy systems and AI Assistant Tools, enabling the creation of tailored cross-sector data-driven services aimed to: 1) Support community-led self-consumption and production schemes; 2) Enhance end-users' capabilities in managing energy resources, optimizing energy usage, and making well-informed energy-related decisions; 3) Empower end-users by improving their digital and energy literacy, enhancing user experience, and overcoming potential resistance and barriers. CELINE tools and services will be tested in three real-world Demonstrators (Ds) across different European regions, offering diverse climate, geographical, and socio-economic conditions (Valencia/ES, Lappeenranta/FI, and Alpe Cimbra/IT).
