    The general objective of the project is to overcome the barrier established by a formal interpretation of the two Directives 2008/96/EC (on road infrastructure safety management) and 2004/54/EC (on tunnels), that in practice doesn’t allow to perform infrastructure safety checks inside tunnels. The main problem is that, while from the user’s (drivers) point of view a road is a unique linear infrastructure generally in open terrain and sometimes in closed environment (tunnels), a strict application of the two Directives leads to a non-uniform approach to the infrastructure safety management outside and inside tunnels. To overcome this barrier, Ecoroad aims at the establishment of a common enhanced approach to road infrastructure and tunnel safety management by using concepts and criteria of the Directive 2008/96/CE on road infrastructure safety management and the results of related EC funded projects. Such objective will be achieved through the following specific objectives: - Workshops with the stakeholders (European tunnel and road managers); Analysis/review of national practices regarding Road Safety Inspections (RSI) and Road Safety Audit (RSA), starting from the results of the 2 studies recently launched by DG Move to assess the impact of the two Directives 2008/96/EC (on road infrastructure safety management) and 2004/54/EC (on tunnels) - Exchange of best practices and experiences between European tunnel experts and road safety professionals - Pilot joint safety operations in some European road sections having both open roads and tunnels - Recommendations and guidelines for the application of the RSA and RSI concepts within the tunnel safety operations Thanks to the high transferability of the ECOROADS results, the present formal gap (explained in details in the following paragraph) between the Directive 2008/96/EC and the Directive 2004/54/EC will be completely filled and will lead to “ faster, more sustainable and better planned interventions."

    PANACEA has 17 partners from 8 countries coming from multidisciplinary fields. The project will design, develop and test a holistic driving ability assessment system for commercial drivers to be used pre-driving, during driving and at the roadside, paired with cloud-based countermeasure and coaching solutions. In order to achieve this, PANACEA will create driver-oriented, health-based, touchless, and Use Case (UC) driven health monitoring and assessment solutions capable of detecting alcohol, licit (barbituric), illicit (methadone replacement) drugs, fatigue, stress, and cognitive load. Those drivers detected as unfit by the assessment/monitoring technology will receive personalised, targeted support from the cloud-based countermeasure and coaching system. Commercial Health Toolkits (CHTs), combining assessment/monitoring techniques with countermeasure solutions, will be tailored to fit the specific needs of each UC. The CHTs aim to become an ecosystem of support and knowledge for drivers and operators alike, available before/after/during shifts as well as on site and roadside. The sensitivity, specificity, robustness, ease-of-use, satisfaction and acceptance of these CHTs will be evaluated with over 90 AV shuttle, e-truck, coach and taxi drivers and courier service riders, operators and stakeholders, across 3 UC-driven Pilots (Greece, Spain and Sweden), considering gender specificities. A 4th UC focus on the transferability of the improved knowledge and technologies to other transport modes (i.e. aviation, maritime and rail). The primary outcome of PANACEA is the creation of new assessment technologies and countermeasure strategies which come together as a new fitness to drive paradigm applicable in commercial vehicle operations with vehicles at various automation levels. Finally, with the support of the Advisory Board, policy and legislative recommendations and updates of existing standards for health provision for commercial transportations will be provided.

    TRUST brings together the leading researchers and practitioners on traffic safety culture (TSC) for the first time. They will join forces to leverage the potential of TSC as a concept to support the 2030 50% reduction goals for road safety and further sustainability goals. TRUST will: • Move from different interpretations of TSC to a common definition and academic consensus, as well as a conceptual framework, covering transformation at community and organisational level. • Demonstrate how TSC supports both Safe System and sustainable mobility approaches. • Create the TRUST platform to provide guidance to authorities, companies and decision-makers on all levels, including o low-threshold access to validated (self-) assessment tools for benchmarking and applying appropriate intervention strategies, using established and AI-based approaches. o a European TSC index for national and subnational levels. • Through 7 pilots, demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of TSC measuring tools and transformation interventions. Already 20 local authorities and companies in 12 countries agreed to participate in TRUST pilots, not counting access to hundreds of driving and secondary schools. The TRUST consortium covers all relevant areas of expertise (road safety, safety culture, education & training, policy & guidance) and has an explicit Social Sciences and Humanities orientation, with more than 50% SSH researchers as well as 50+ published papers and 100 projects on TSC. The group was put together balancing partners from countries with high, mid and low road safety performances. Together with its Associated Partners and Advisory Board, TRUST convenes the leading experts not only from the EU, but also from the USA, CAN, AUS and JP. It features safety culture experts from aviation, rail and maritime and provides links with low- and middle-income countries. The TRUST pilots consider all road user groups and road safety hot topics, including new technologies and mobility forms

    The objective of this project is to setup a framework for the definition, development, testing and validation of a context-aware ‘safety tolerance zone’ for on-road driving, within a smart Driver and Road Environment Assessment and Monitoring System (i-DREAMS). Taking into account, on the one hand, driver-related background factors (age, driving experience, safety attitudes and perceptions, etc.) and real-time risk-related physiological indicators (e.g. fatigue, distraction, stress, etc.), and on the other hand, driving task-related complexity indicators (e.g. time of day, speed, traffic intensity, presence of vulnerable road users, adverse weather, etc.) a continuous real-time assessment will be made to monitor and determine if a driver is within acceptable boundaries of safe operation (i.e. safety tolerance zone). Moreover, safety-oriented interventions will be developed to prevent drivers from getting too close to the boundaries of unsafe operation and to bring back the driver into the safety tolerance zone. These interventions will be composed of both real-time interventions, i.e. in-vehicle while travelling, and other interventions aimed at enhancing the knowledge, attitudes, perceptions and behavioural reaction of drivers with respect to safety-related technologies, situations and behaviours. Application areas will include: new road safety interventions, improved driver well-being and transfer of control between human and vehicle. Initial testing will take place in a driving simulator environment after which promising interventions will be tested and validated under real-world conditions in a testbed consisting of 600 drivers in total across 5 EU countries. Market roadmaps will be developed to support smooth transition of the investigated technologies to the market and experience from use cases in different European countries will be used to disseminate best practices.
