The Internet has had a revolutionary impact on our world. The vision of a Quantum Internet is to provide fundamentally new Internet technology by enabling quantum communication between any two points on earth. In synergy with the ‘classical’ Internet that we have today, a Quantum Internet will connect quantum processors to achieve unparalleled capabilities that are provably impossible using classical communication. The mission of the Quantum Internet Alliance (QIA) is to build a global Quantum Internet made in Europe – by developing a full-stack prototype network, and by driving an innovative European Quantum Internet ecosystem capable of scaling the network to world-leading European technology. Building on its proven track record in teamwork, which has already resulted in world first Quantum Internet technology, QIA advances this mission in two complementary objectives: The first is the realization of a full-stack prototype network able to distribute entanglement between two metropolitan-scale networks via a long-distance backbone (>500 km) using quantum repeaters. The second is the establishment of a European platform for Quantum Internet development, which will act as a catalyst for a European Quantum Internet Ecosystem including actors all along the value chain. QIA’s network will enable advanced quantum-network applications and prepare the ground for secure quantum computing in the cloud, thanks to our new generation of end nodes including both processing nodes and low-cost photonic client devices. Nodes in the metropolitan network will be interconnected via hubs that allow the scalable connection of hundreds of end nodes, paving the way for early adopters. The long-distance backbone will be realized using fully functional quantum repeaters unlocking Pan-European end-to-end quantum communication. QIA’s prototype network will operate on standard optical fibers and serves to validate all key sub-systems, ready to be scaled by European industry.

The Quantum Secure Networks Partnership (QSNP) aims at creating a sustainable European ecosystem in quantum cryptography and communication. A majority of its partners are participants in the Quantum Flagship projects CIVIQ, UNIQORN and QRANGE, and include world-leading academic groups, research and technology organizations (RTOs), quantum component and system spin-offs, cybersecurity providers, integrators, and telecommunication operators. The Partnership thus has the expertise in all technology development phases, from new designs to field deployment, making it ideal to carry out the future Specific Grant Agreement (SGA) projects. QSNP is structured around three main Science and Technology (ST) pillars. The first two pillars, “Next Generation Protocols” and “Integration”, focus on frontier research and innovation led mostly by academic partners and RTOs. The third ST pillar “Use cases and Applications” aims at expanding the industrial and economic impact of QSN technologies and is mostly driven by companies. In order to achieve the specific objectives within each pillar and ensure that know-how transfer and synergy between them are coherent and effective, QSNP has established ST activities corresponding to the three main layers of the technology value chain, “Components and Systems”, “Networks” and “Cryptography and Security”. Future SGA projects will be able to efficiently rely on this framework, in such a way that the ultimate objective of developing quantum communication technology for critical European infrastructures, such as EuroQCI, and private information and communication market sectors, will be achieved. QSNP will contribute to achieving European sovereignty in quantum technology for cybersecurity. At the same time, it will generate significant economic benefits to the whole society, including training a new generation of scientists and engineers, and the creation of high-tech jobs in the rapidly growing quantum industry.

A majority of its partners, which include world-leading academic groups, research and technology organizations (RTOs), quantum component and system spin-offs, cybersecurity providers, integrators, and telecommunication operators, were members of the European Quantum Flagship projects CIVIQ, UNIQORN and QRANGE. In an era of unprecedented digital threats, Europe faces a critical cybersecurity crisis. The coming of quantum computers threatens to render current cryptography methods obsolete, potentially exposing sensitive government, financial, & personal data to malicious actors. This is compounded by the “harvest now, decrypt later” strategy, where adversaries stockpile encrypted data for future decryption, jeopardizing long-term data security. Q*Bird addresses this crisis with our groundbreaking Measurement Device Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD) technology. Unlike traditional QKD systems, our solution offers unparalleled security, scalability, & cost-effectiveness. Our multi-point-to-multi-point architecture enables easy network expansion, dramatically reducing per-user costs while maintaining quantum-safe security. This innovation not only safeguards against current and future quantum threats but also lays the foundation for the emerging Quantum Internet. A European deep-tech startup, Q*Bird is uniquely positioned to contribute to the EU's technological sovereignty in this critical domain. Our technology aligns perfectly with key EU initiatives such as the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) and the Cybersecurity Strategy for the Digital Decade. However, the high-risk nature of quantum technology development, coupled with long commercialization timelines, creates significant challenges in securing sufficient private investment. EIC Accelerator support is crucial to bridge the gap between our current prototype and full commercialization. This support would not only accelerate our technology development but also catalyze additional private investment, enabling Europe to lead in the quantum communication revolution. With EIC backing, Q*Bird can transform the secure communications landscape, ensuring Europe's digital resilience in the quantum age.
