"EU now is at a critical important period of its integration (European Integration), with its development for almost 68 years, European Integration now meets its striking and critical stages, not only from within EU but also from outside: the European Debt Crisis (still influencing the development of EU, even now getting better); the Ukrainian Crisis in 2015 (still having a strong impact on EU and its policy making); the Migrant Crisis since 2015; and the Terrorist Attack is having more serious influence within EU region, and also the strong voice of UK about leaving the EU (Its impact might be there for years even after the Brexit). The EU and European integration in Crises arouse the concern of the scholars internally and externally, and these crises will be the bottleneck in the further development of European Integration. The key points we have in the proposal might be simply summarized as:1. To give our efforts on the studies of the development of European Integration, from an interdisciplinary external view, especially the Chinese view;2. To enhance the sustainable development of the Centre (CES-SCU) and enhance its influence both in China and Asia;3. To keep/strengthen the influence of the Jean Monnet projects at the campus of Sichuan University and at the campuses of the colleges and universities having collaboration with the Centre in West China and Chinese region and in Asia. Objective: To further strengthen the existing Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (2011-2869), to integrate Sichuan University’s Jean Monnet projects at the campus, and to improve its influence in West China and in China and Asia as well.In addition to the above, with the support of EU projects and Sichuan University, we have organized actively the promotion of the understanding of European Integration, e.g. the annual event of EU Day. We have EU Day not only in Chengdu, also in Central China and West China areas (2018 at Shanxi University) to attract and engage the faculty and students at the campuses, local government servants and the public. The event has enhanced the understanding of the Chinese public about European IntegrationAt the same time, based on the practical need, we have organized some events not planned in the proposal. In 2017 we had invited European scholars to Chengdu for roundtables or lectures, such as ""China-EU Research Cooperation in BRI: New Ideas and New Views,” to have updated discussion with the European scholars exchanging ideas about BRI and its problems. In April 2019, to celebrate the 30 years of Excellence in EU studies of Jean Monnet Activities and before the 2nd Beijing Summit Forum of BRI, we had invited some European and Asian scholars with their expertise on EU-Asia, EU-China relations and BRI research to Chengdu for discussion,“Intercultural Communication in the BRI: Eurasian Dialogue on the New Silk Road”,so as to hear the comments and critical feedback of the European and Asian scholars on BRI 5 years after its launch. For the convenience to check the information and events listed, we have attached the related events, programmes, both in proposal plan and out of plan, and their internet-addresses in the Agenda Events."

The applicant of the project will offer two tailor-made courses in the field of European Studies at Sichuan University in China for undergraduates majoring in science and engineering with the aim to: 1. introduce the historical development of the European Union and its diversity politics particularly for students of non-EU studies; 2. inspire students’ interest in European Union issues and encourage them to acquire in-depth knowledge about the European affairs in the future; 3. improve the applicant’s first-hand experiences in teaching and researching in European studies; 4. cultivate a young scholar of CES at SCU which promises to be conducive to the sustainable development of the centre and cooperation between SCU and European partner universities. At present, the multidisciplinary academic team of CES at SCU composed by senior experts, middle-aged and young scholars are jointly delivering a series of open lectures on the EU from the perspectives of culture, economics, religion, politics, education etc. at SCU in every academic year. These lectures, though providing varying angles to know the EU, lack cohesion. The creation of the new course “The Diversity Politics in the European Union” under the project aims to present a completer and more coherent picture of European culture and politics to Chinese students. Furthermore, the previous EU-related courses mainly targeted students majoring in humanities. The applicant of this project intends to offer such courses for undergraduates majoring in science and engineering, for most of them have very limited exposure to knowledge about the EU, European integration, European common values and norms. Main objectives: to expose students majoring in science and engineering at SCU to more fundamental knowledge on the EU; to familiarize such students with the European integration history and EU’s diversity politics; to inform students of common European values and of a European view of the world.
