It is becoming increasingly clear that the future success of the EU will depend on building civic values around which its citizens will be united. This project intends to bring to the fore the role of artistic fictions, and particularly of narrative arts such as literature and cinema, in the building of such values. One crucial way in which art may be used to address questions of value is allowing individuals to confront their own fears and desires by way of artistic fictions in which such fears and desires play a prominent part. Artistic fictions may help European citizens find out, articulate, discuss and negotiate the kind of society they would like to live in, where their fears are abated and their desires come to fruition. Since such a society always exists as a project of the future, and not as something presently given, its possibility will depend on the eventual adoption of certain practices, policies and values that will lead to its creation. Discussions around and interpretations of literary and cinematic fictions may hence be instrumental in the building of common values throughout the European process of becoming a union. This module intends to bring an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to EU studies which have not yet sufficiently tapped into literature and the arts as cultural sources for EU integration. It involves a graduate and an undergraduate course, which will lead to interpretations and evaluations of meticulously selected literary and artistic fictions of fear by way of class discussions and projects. These interpretations and evaluations will be published in an open-access internet archive for dissemination across the EU. Further dissemination will be achieved through seminars, conference papers and academic publications. The internet archive will contribute to the emergence of a canon of artistic fictions, which will prove to be valuable in the project of creating common values across EU countries. .

Diversity is a key concern of the European Union not only due to its’ multicultural structure consisting of 27 member states and societies but also because of the strong linkages of diversity with equality and inclusion. Therefore, diversity is a concept that handled by the EU strategies beyond just the numbers and presence of different individuals within its population. It is also highly related to the richness of societies in terms age, race, ethnicity, color, gender, religion, economic status, or sexual orientation. Therefore, diversity is a concept that handled by the EU strategies beyond just the numbers and presence of different individuals within its population. It is also highly related to the richness of societies in terms age, race, ethnicity, color, gender, religion, economic status, or sexual orientation. Although there are several studies on migration, youth and culture, a comprehensive approach merging these three issues under the concept of “diversity” is still underrepresented in EU studies both as a teaching issue and as a research topic. Based on this background, this Centre of Excellence aims to provide curricular – extracurricular teaching and activities and promote a research agenda on diversity and EU studies by focusing on three major themes as (i) migration, (ii) youth and (iii) culture. The Center will also merge, make sustainable and further internationalize previous Jean Monnet Actions of Yasar University European Union Center which has bene involved in 7 Jean Monnet modules, 2 Jean Monnet Chairs and 1 Jean Monnet network in last 10 years.
