ICE-RF organized a 2-week preparation in August 2016 in Niederbronn-les-Bains, as well as seminars in other regions of France in November 2016 and May 2017.We believe that the expected impact and results have been largely achieved:- for volunteers, to affirm their desire for commitment, to encourage them to become responsible citizens, to make them become aware of their skills. What was achieved for Will, Marie, Ada and Patricia, according to their final report and the exchanges we had with them. These objectives were not fully achieved for Tobias, because, by mutual agreement, his service was interrupted. He did not find his place and his role in Emmaus, despite different exchanges and proposals from the host site and the ICE-RF organization.- for organizations, to allow them to continue to offer voluntary services to young people. This is also the case since they welcome volunteers in 2017-2018 and wish to do so in 2018-2019.- for target audiences, to allow them to interact with people from different cultures and to show them an example of a successful project. The potential long-term benefits are to make these volunteers and hosting structures examples of successful European exchanges. So that other young people and other structures engage in this type of project. We are collaborating again with the sending organizations ICE-D and IJGD, who have already found interested volunteers for 2018-2019 projects. So the long-term goal of motivating other young people to volunteer is achieved

As a consequence, xenophobic attitudes, discrimination against people with different identities and open racism have become a sad reality in schools and other places where young people of diverse backgrounds interact. Given this situation the partners in this project are convinced that European youth NGOs should play a more active role in detecting and combatting intolerant, discriminatory and racist behavior in their own organizations and programmes. Therefore this project was generated to work on the following questions: How can we make a difference given the current challenge of increasing racism and discrimination against people of diverse background? What kind of changes are needed at structural and operational level to support organizations taking clear positions and displaying coherent behavior? How can we start reflective processes and pursue respective change in our organizations? Which processes lead to success? Against this background and in line with the Paris declaration of EU Education Ministers in 2015, the overarching aim of the project ""Be the change"" was to ensure that young people acquire social, civic and intercultural competences by promoting democratic values and fundamental rights, social inclusion and non-discrimination, as well as active citizenship. This was done by enhancing the management, governance, innovation capacity and diversity-oriented approach of youth organisations in 10 EU countries and in Russia, providing them with tools and strategies for racism-critical and diversity-oriented change management. The project was developed as an accompanying measure in the frame of the “STAR E” Strategic Partnership Project (https:///) implemented by ICJA with 8 partner organizations from 2017 – 2020. Main project activity was a 5 day Training Seminar on diversity-oriented change management, which took place in Berlin in Berlin from 18-22 February 2019 and involved 20 participants from 12 youth and voluntary service organizations in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and United Kingdom. The training programme was developed by a group of partners of the STAR E project under the guidance of two trainers of the expert organization SOCIUS in Berlin. All Partners contributed their experience in international youth exchange and voluntary service programs. Many of them also could count on experience in including youth from minorities and vulnerable target groups and in promoting peace and diversity-oriented non formal education for young people. The training programme on one hand provided the opportunity to learn from each other and from the experts of Socius. On the other hand, tailormade diversity-oriented change processes were initiated, which will have an impact on the participating organisation's development. By participating in this project the partner organisations strengthened their role as facilitators of inclusion and promoters of diversity. After the seminar, the participants were equipped with the tools and knowledge to devise adapted strategies to introduce and accompany change in their organizations. They were more aware about racist and discriminatory attitudes and structures in their work and organization and what they can do about it. The training sessions constantly inter-related the values of diversity-orientation, anti-discrimination and inclusion with the learning about change management in youth NGOs and thus had a direct impact on the management and activities of the participating organisations. As a result the participants learnt to apply tools and methods which have sustainable influence on their organization’s sensitivity towards diversity as well as capacity to facilitate inclusion. A detailed training report was published on the Erasmus+ ""Project Results Database"" and it is expected that it will inspire like-minded youth organizations to undertake and manage diversity-oriented change processes which will increase the quality of youth work in Europe in the longer term."
