Frequent exposure to odour is associated with headache, stress and respiratory problems. Odour nuisance is an indicator of larger environmental issues, such as poor waste management or polluted water. Yet, odour pollution has repeatedly been ignored in environmental regulations leaving citizens defenceless. Due to the lack of regulation, situated technical studies are rarely conducted and data and statistics on odour pollution are scarce or difficult to access. D-NOSES aims to provide a solution to this largely neglected problem by reversing the way in which odour pollution is commonly tackled. Our approach is to empower citizens with RRI, citizen science and co-creation tools to become drivers of change. D-NOSES promotes a quadruple helix model that will be applied at local, national and global levels. Through the International Odour Observatory, we will guarantee access to information in odour pollution. We will co-design citizen science interventions across 7 European and 3 non-European countries, where citizens will use innovative mapping tools to crowdsource odour issues and co-create ad-hoc solutions with CSOs, NGOs, local public authorities, odour emitting industries and academia. Advocacy actions, together with project results, such as DIY Guidelines for project replicability, scientific guidelines for policy making and The Green Paper on Odour Pollution, will be used as policy tools with the ultimate aim of introducing odour pollution in the policy agenda. A ‘Strategic Roadmap on Odour Pollution’ will pave the way for bottom-up, multi-level governance for increased sustainability in the medium to long term. To address D-NOSES aims we have assembled a world-class partnership combining experts in RRI, citizen science and co-creation, International Associations, odour scientists, including universities and SMEs, local administration and public bodies from 9 countries.

It will promote democracy, climate justice, gender equality, equity, and foster adaptive capacity and citizens empowerment to pro-actively support decision-making processes. AGORAs main ambition, beyond the state of the art, is to promote societal transformational processes in different social, economic and political contexts through transdisciplinary tools and approaches. Citizens, civil society organizations, academics, experts, policy-makers, entrepreneurs and other relevant actors will be engaged in the co-design and co-creation of innovative problem oriented climate adaptation solutions that could be extensively adopted in Europe also considering the deep social changes on going and the awareness that no one size fits all solution. Specifically, AGORA will provide: A package of digital tools and co-developed frameworks relying on multi-directional communication technologies. Innovative problem-oriented climate adaptation solutions. Blueprints for effective decision making and collaborative processes that build on the dialogue among stakeholders and on the integration of different types of knowledge. A set of pilot regions will constitute the co-production arena to co-design, co-develop and co-implement climate adaptation solutions. AGORA will also develop a roadmap for transformational change and upscale of citizen engagement, for transferability of effective policy instruments and for ensuring long term legacy.

This proposal responds to the needs of citizen science actors (atomization and interoperability issues, efficiency, etc) and lays the foundation for the world's first complete design of this nature. It sets a flagship pathway for citizen science marking a supposes significant leap forward for excellence in citizen science for the coming decades. The RIECS-Concept project will produce two key outcomes: a conceptual design including a feasibility study, and a five-year implementation plan for the new research infrastructure. These outcomes will provide detailed insights into the diversity and maturity of the concept considering technical, operational, societal, and environmental challenges associated with establishing the permanent and shared infrastructure. To gather project findings and community-based evidence, the consortium will conduct primary, secondary, and meta-analysis research involving a wide range of communities and various themes and scientific domains. With a transversal and holistic approach, topics addressed will include the catalogue of resources and best practices, gaps assessment, legal and ethical considerations, as well as sustainability and governance frameworks. The consortium will cooperate with major national and international networks co-organizing activities such as surveys and workshops to bring their related solutions and needs.

ECS will capitalise on EU-funded actions such as the EU-Citizen.Science platform and Cos4Cloud to support links and collaboration between members of the European Citizen Science community, who will be involved in the co-design and co-creation of a large variety of services, strategic priorities, training opportunities and policy recommendations. A key focus is on inclusivity, which will be achieved through dedicated actions such as engaging libraries affiliated to the Public Libraries 2030 network to attract underrepresented publics, as well as ad-hoc support to countries/regions lacking citizen science networks, platforms and policy recognition. ECS will create extensive capacity building opportunities by engaging in particular excellent researchers in a variety of disciplines, for example through the involvement of the Marie Curie Alumni Association, and emerging Horizon Europe Missions, Clusters, and wider ERA activities, to allow easy access for newcomers in citizen science activities. ECS is committed to push modern science towards open science as its modus operandi by providing open collaborative spaces where citizen scientists can familiarise with the concept of "open and FAIR data with open and FAIR tools" and get actively engaged, while connecting with existing e-infrastructures such as EOSC through the collaborative development of data/metadata services. The engagement of the Global Citizen Science Partnership will guarantee wide international cooperation. These efforts will result in a number of key scientific, societal and policy impacts which will strongly contribute to securing Europe's global position as a leader in citizen science throughout the entire research and innovation system.

The project underscores the necessity of local authorities making direct investments that impact vulnerable communities significantly. A recent workshop, "Digitalization for Climate Action: Co-Creation, Collaboration and Just Transitions," highlighted the importance of co-creative digital activities for inclusive participation, activism's role in digital and climate spheres, the engagement of political actors in prioritizing climate measures, and the support for sustainable innovations in cities to prevent the exclusion of vulnerable groups. This project aligns with the EU Mission Adaptation to Climate Change, promoting a comprehensive approach to inclusive adaptation to climate change.
