Our journey"" was dedicated to youngsters interested in artistic activities, especially to those of them who experienced some obstacles. The idea for the project came from our observations and experience in work with youngsters. The current situation in Europe, the tasks of youth workers were to find new, innovative methods to prevent radicalization of youth and to give them the possibility of understanding people from different backgrounds. We had realized this need in our organization and we started searching for a method which would be useful in this situation. We were inspired by youngsters in our organization and we had decided to apply a method based on acting (theatre) and Hero’s journey model. We shared our reflections with our partners and we realized that our wards have a similar situation and same needs. The project was based on the hero's journey model (monomyth) created by Joseph Campbell. It is the common template of a broad category of tales that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed. This model is sometimes used in non-formal education as a metaphor describing the learning process. We thought it is suitable also in this case.At the beginning of the story, the hero must leave his home and enter a new world (usually full of dangers) which s/he does not know. This situation could be easily compared to the experience of refugees. We wanted to introduce Hero’s journey model to young people and give them a space to create a scenario based on it. The next step was common work to perform the story and record a video. Objectives of the project were:- to form tolerance and openness, to provide a better understanding of people from different cultures, especially the situation of refugees - to encourage young people to overcome the fear of the unknown things and failure, to increase their self-confidence- to increase awareness of youth of learning by daily experience- to develop their creativity and to improve dancing, acting and artistic skills- to promote innovative methods in youth workThe project involved youngsters aged 14-26 from the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Greece. Form every country there will be 4 youth and 1 leader, 2 leaders from hosting country. Even before the project could have started we had our first issue to solve and it was accommodation. It was quite difficult to find a place for the project in summer since all places were already reserved in advance. For that reason we had to change the location of the project. In the end, we did find a place in Deštné v Orlických horách. As the preparations for the project were on their way, we found out that from Poland will not be all 5 necessary participants and we offered this place to other countries and to our offer came forward Lithuanian team saying, that they could get one more participant from their country. Also throughout the project participants from Greece and Bulgaria weren't so satisfied with Czech cuisine and were asking for more salad and fresh food. Before the exchange was organized APV for leaders. In APV meeting we solved issues like how many people are vegetarians and talked about their dishes through our the project. The participants took part in several activities which helped them to understand and reflect on the situation of refugees and also on the topic of heroes - discussions, presentations, watching a movie, storytelling workshops. A very important activity was a hiking trip with special tasks. During it, the participants went out of their comfort zone and went through all stages of a typical hero´s journey. It gave them experience which helped them to identify with heroes and with that they gained a better understanding of a topic. There were also activities connected with art and cultural expression. Those type of activities were useful in social inclusion and helped to develop interests and skills of youngsters. The most important impact on the participants was a change in their attitude and the development of their competences. Another important impact of the project was innovation and improvement in a youth work - using the hero´s journey model as a tool of social inclusion and prevention of youth radicalization. We promoted it via dissemination activities and this impact reached local, regional, national and European level. There was also impact on local communities, for instance, prevention of misbehaviour of teenagers and increasing interest in cultural and international activities."
