10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes CIICESI is the most relevant and diversified interface structure between knowledge entities and the business community in the region of Tâmega and Sousa. In this way, CIICESI places the responsibility for developing skills and mechanisms for the transfer of scientific knowledge and technology, assuming a dynamic role in the community in which it is a pioneer in the pursuit of actions to stimulate and facilitate the transfer of technology to the entities, making the link between higher education institutions and companies in the region. CIICESI holds interdisciplinar scientific, technological and technical skills necessary to promote and disseminate new knowledge to the business community. The knowledge produced at this center has the right conditions for the implementation of actions aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of companies in the region by launching new products, adopting new processes, but namely the optimization of existing processes and generating greater added value. The importance of the center is also justified by the current needs of the region itself regarding the use and valuation of knowledge in companies and the competitive capacity of companies that has the lowest R&D investment numbers in the country. Tâmega e Sousa region also has a low investment and a low number of people affected by the R&D activity compared to other regions of the country and the levels observed at European level. Considering the large number of companies in the region in sectors considered strategic for the national economy, many of them are exporters, it is concluded that there is a window of opportunity to develop the competitive capacity of companies through the transfer of technology and knowledge in a state of art that consecrates the activity of innovation in companies. The strategic objectives defined by CIICESI are as follows: - Dynamize the innovation ecosystem of the Tâmega and Sousa Region in favor of the industrial revolution - Industry 4.0; - Position CIICESI as the reference interface for technology and knowledge transfer projects in the fields of Industry 4.0 and IoT; - Strengthen formal mechanisms of technology transfer with an emphasis on advanced production systems; - Contribute to the competitiveness of the region's industry and, in parallel, to its socio-economic development. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation In accordance with the established objectives, a high-level activities plan was defined that presents a set of actions designed to respond to three key points: A) Contributions to the advancement and application of knowledge; B) Internationalization and C) Transfer of knowledge and technology. A) Contributions to the advancement and application of knowledge The interaction between CIICESI and the companies will promote the increase of the number of qualified professionals at the service of the companies of the region. According to European "good examples" the efficient implementation of technology and knowledge of advanced production systems and IoT contributes positively to the competitiveness of enterprises and directly to the economic development of the country through the generation of value and sustainable jobs. The development of R&D projects aimed at economic valuation and the growth and development of local industry will allow the dissemination of knowledge and the adoption of more competitive and value-creating processes. The transfer of knowledge and technology to the business community will contribute to the valorization and profitability of the knowledge acquired and developed in CIICESI, motivating the creativity, innovation and creation of technology, in order to solve the problems and satisfy the needs identified by the companies of the region. Within the scope of this dimension, it is objectively sought: - Reinforcing research, technological development and innovation; - Publication of scientific and technical articles in journals and journals of reference: Given the scientific and technological advances that are expected, showing the effective benefit for the companies; - The promotion of business investment in innovation research, the development of links and synergies between enterprises, R&D centers and higher education; - Focus in real companies problems resolution an in the development of customized solutions, using the adequate state of art concepts. B) Internationalization CIICESI has as one of its founding principles to stimulate innovation and development in the industrial activity of the region of Tâmega and Sousa and, in particular, of their international transactions. A kind of new industrial revolution in Europe is underway and Portugal will have to promote the adjustment of its industrial development strategies in order to avoid losing the "new convoy" of the economic development of Europe. The application of IoT in industry has enormous potential and the expected results mean relevant competitive gains that can be observed transversally in the value chain of any company. Although still in the exploration phase of the industry, there are some applications of IoT in three main levels: - Automation and Simplification of logistic production chains and manufacturing processes; - Optimization of sales processes and relationship with customers; - Optimization of activities related to distribution and transportation. Done this, in the scope of internationalization CIICESI seeks to contribute with: - The development and application of new business models for SMEs, especially with a view to their internationalization; - Support for the creation and extension of advanced development capabilities for new processes; - Supporting the capacity of SMEs to participate in the processes of growth and innovation. C) Transfer of knowledge and technology The development of R&D projects with a view to economic valuation and to the growth and development of local industry will allow the dissemination of knowledge and the adoption of more efficient and higher productivity processes and therefore, as value generators. The Porto Polytechnic Institute (IPP) was created in 1985 and involves 7 Schools: Education (ESE); Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE); Engineering (ISEP); Accounting and Administration (ISCAP); Management and Industrial Studies (ESEIG); Management and Technology (ESTGF); and Applied Health Sciences (ESTSP). In 2015 over 18.000 students attended the IPP seven Schools. IPP involves more than 20 R&D units, being the Polytechnic Institute in Portugal better positioned in international scientific rankings. ESTGF is a dynamic and proactive institution of higher education integrated in IPP. ESTGF's mission is to take part in development, social wellbeing, and technical and scientific national excellence, by promoting a solid education, enabling students to become innovative leaders of progress and innovation. ESTGF involves about 1300 students distributed by 7 BSc and 7 MSc degrees concerning 4 main areas: Computer Science, Business Sciences, Legal Practice and Occupational Health and Safety. The Center for Research and Innovation in Business Sciences and Information Systems (CIICESI) is a functional unity of innovation and research, community service provision and knowledge dissemination in its specific domains. The Center integrates 14 PhD researchers (and 23 collaborators), who are experts in several areas of Business Sciences and Information Systems, namely, Regional and Local Development, Business and Organizational Strategy, Quality Management, New Information Technologies, Industrial Management and Engineering, Information Systems Management, Transportation, Distribution and Logistics, Decision Support Systems, Enterprise Information Systems, Marketing and Project Management.
