Recent advances in the field of zinc electrodeposition in aqueous electrolytes have enabled to significantly mitigate its two main problems that are, zinc dendritic grain growth and hydrogen evolution, which has strongly boost the development of zinc aqueous batteries (ZnB). From the fundamental point of view however, the rational of the underlying mechanisms has not only been recently completely questioned but is also presumably incomplete mainly because the interfacial chemistry at play at the zinc surface during repeated electrodepositions is not understood. Therefore, based on synergistic collaborations the main objective of ZORG’s consortium consists in achieving a unified understanding of the zinc dynamical chemistry and its morphology evolution at different scales during repeated electrodepositions by using an innovative set of multi-scale operando techniques. It also intends to validate and expand this expected knowledge by evaluating the impact of the electroactive material of the other electrode, as well as designing new electrolytic salts and additives.
