Siemens Shareholding Company has been providing an apprenticeship place for trainees within the frame of the Hungarian dual vocational training system as part of the regular education since 2012. The corporation colligates and takes on young people learning skills in short supply like welders, industrial mechanical technicians and cutting machine operators. According to the plans, in the summer of 2015 and 2016 (for 3 weeks in each course) 2x18 apprentices and 2x2 accompanying staff could participate in the apprenticeship held in the Professional Education of Siemens AG, Mülheim. The program was carried out within a total duration period of 24 months: between 01. 11. 2014 and 31. 10. 31. 2016, which allowed enough time for secure and thorough organization. The technical apprenticeship provided an opportunity of gaining successful, first-hand experience which is to be useful both for the participants and the company with important long-term effects while it contributed also to building apprentices’ character.Participants had a chance to increase and deepen their technical knowledge gained throughout the school year with the assistance of highly professional and empathic technical trainers in the vocational Professional Education having many years of practice in the field supported by the highest level technical background. In the frame of this project, in addition to the former 25 apprentices of the Leonardo Program, another 36 apprentices got an Europass certificate recognizing the fulfilment of their apprenticeship. The long-term goal of the project is to provide more successful and more effective employment chances in both the national and international labour market. In a technical environment other than that at home and along with new processes the same technologies gain a new interpretation, as well. Trainees’ work experience and attitude of being a „European expert” has broadened and strengthened: precise, accurate, painstaking working and a proper acknowledgement of the work. It also demonstrates the success of the project that 5 apprentices from the 2015 group passed an exam in 2016 organized by the German-Hungarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce Trade successfully obtaining a German skilled worker certificate. Our objective of greatly improving the character building of our apprentices in case of such an apprenticeship has also come true. Living through disengagement from the parents (for several weeks), for many the first trip abroad, becoming independent, living together for a long time as a team, coping with difficulties due to the foreign language have all been unavoidable. At the same time, however, all these circumstances having been mitigated by being “adventurous” must have been a positive experience of a lifetime for and a milestone in the personal development of all participants.Implementation of the course: proposal preparation began within the actual project period, after signing a contract with Tempus Public Foundation on 01. 11. 2014. Thanks to the good project period we could ensure an organized and thorough preparation for our apprentices by pre- acquainting them early with the criteria (behaviour, diligence, average of theoretical and practical notes, outcomes of technical and language level exams, motivation letter) necessary for the application. Participants of each course were selected about one month before the actual school year ended. Preparation thus lasted at least for half a year allowing enough time for the necessary motivation and (professional) curiosity to develop. In addition to a constant language training, 1 to 2 months before the journey apprentices went through an intensive linguistic, mental and cultural preparation. Moreover, the exact timing of the 3-week long apprenticeship was inserted in the semester schedule, into the weeks right after the school year. It was particularly important to draw participants’ attention to the management of job logs and to control them later on. Young people taking part in the application process give a good example for their class- and schoolmates and strengthen the importance of learning languages. With the support of the proposals the future employment chances of another 36 young people were – hopefully facilitated as well as an experience of a lifetime was provided for them. Furthermore, it has made happy every leader and colleague at Siemens who took part in the program that in addition to the EU support the corporation could contribute to its young people gaining experience in a way that did not pose any financial burden on them. We have been dealing with dual training for only 5 years, while Siemens AG had already been doing that for 125 years – and this series of programs continues to point in the right direction forward they pioneered.https://w5.siemens.com/web/hu/hu/spe/Pages/Default.aspx
