It is not easy to pinpoint the factors that influence this (financial issues, gender stereotypes, etc.), but what is clear is the looming influence and pressure exerted by the patriarchal discourse on gender equality in sport, not to mention the influence of the media.IIt is not the case that modern sport has managed to do away with sexism and it is still essential to design an equal perspective that allows for the elimination of the gender gap in federated sport, while also tackling the role played by the media as an informative and co-educational tool that needs to be nourished by the presence of women role models who also reflect achievements, efforts and, sports habits and offer new sports examples based on equal, diverse and multilateral participation. GAP WOMEN is geared towards achieving a primary objective centred on promoting women’s participation in sport in order to increase the number of women’s federation licences while also promoting inclusive and sustainable sport. To this end, it will take as its starting point a preliminary study about the current situation of the gender gap in sport and will empower federations and other organisations by offering training (online to drive digitalisation in the industry) and tools to further good practices. Effective communication strategies and inclusive and sustainable gender-parity sport events will be set up to raise awareness, sensitise and stimulate women’s involvement in sport while encouraging the community to dismantle preconceived sexist mindsets and stereotypes.GAP WOMEN is aimed at adult women aged 18-50, including ones from vulnerable groups, and also organisations, federations, clubs and public authorities which need to take on board the commitment to promoting sport for equality, social integration, sustainability and economic development.

The EU Physical Activity Guidelines further call on to create a safe environment for the practice of physical activity by the local population. The project “Placemaking for Physical Activity Toolbox” thus seeks to bring together the experience of experts in grassroots sport and placemaking sectors and develop a new concept of promoting physical activity and sport in urban settings. Placemaking as a solution tackling physical inactivity is in the core of the project with an aim to further develop and share it with both community organisations and stakeholders. The project is based on the expertise of 7 partner organisation and is designed to have 3 large stages within a 2-year period – overview of existing tools and assessment of their applicability, conceptualization and development of the toolbox, and adaptation and pilot of the toolbox in various target environments. The project partnership consists of a lead organisation (BG Be Active), two expert European organisations in grassroots sports (International Sport and Culture Association) and placemaking (Placemaking Europe), and implementing organisations (MOVE from Malta, DES from Spain, Power Jump from Bulgaria and Association Sport for All Suceava from Romania). At the end of the project, the partnership aspires to deliver an elaborated concept of placemaking for physical activity, tested tools on reframing urban areas in a way that they inspire healthy lifestyles, and online course to disseminate the knowledge.

Acknowledging the critical importance of social cohesion, over the last decade, sport and physical activity have become increasingly recognized and implemented as tools to foster social cohesion in neighborhoods, cities and communities around Europe. However, in spite of this boom in the field of sport and social cohesion, there remain some “wicked problems” to be addressed: (1) There is a lack of evidence, transparency and understanding of these programmes. (2) Practitioners in the field often lack the skills and tools necessary to measure, evaluate and improve their programmes(3) Despite the numerous theoretical definitions of social cohesion, these definitions do not necessarily reflect the needs, expectations or understanding of practitioners and participants. The Living Lab concept provides an innovative approach to address these gaps in knowledge and implementation. As such, the Sport for Social Cohesion Lab (SSCL) project will implement a Living Lab approach to directly engage programme participants, generate understanding of the elements that promote social cohesion in a sport setting and to develop relevant tools to allow for the exploration, measurement and improvement of social cohesion outcomes in highly diverse but vulnerable urban neighbourhoods. Through this, the SSCL project aims to increase social cohesion in diverse, vulnerable urban neighbourhoods and support practitioners in delivering high quality sport for social cohesion programmes. We do this by creating tools and disseminating knowledge based on a greater understanding of social cohesion at the neighbourhood level. In the end, the SSCL project will facilitate greater social cohesion for the neighbourhoods and individuals who need it most.
