The main aim of this project is to establish a new research center at the Jagiellonian University (JU) in Kraków (Poland). The center will conduct high quality interdisciplinary research connecting artificial intelligence (AI) with healthcare. This group will build on the groundbreaking AI research that is currently conducted at JU. They will apply this work to medical applications, and translate the results into clinical practice. The center will be primarily devoted to research excellence and innovation, but will also operate as a thought leader and an entrepreneurial hub in the medical AI space. The group will be led by an outstanding, internationally recognized physician-scientist with significant achievements in deep learning and medical image analysis. Under his leadership, Polish AI research groups, from JU and beyond, will be able to connect their foundational work with medical experts, which will bring clinicians closer to scientific developments. The ERA Chair holder will be supported by JU faculty and an Advisory Board composed of internationally renowned scientists from top universities across the world, including Harvard University, New York University, Karolinska Institute, and the University of Girona. The center will become an attractive entity and a leader in the medical AI field through research excellence, the improvement of interdisciplinary and international mobility and collaboration, and the creation of attractive courses at the JU. Activities that will lead to this goal are described in 6 Work Packages. In the long-term, work undertaken by the center’s members will have wide societal impacts, primarily through the development of next-negation clinical tools, which will lead to better patient outcomes.

From the beginning, the Erasmus+ programme is one of the main pillars of the mobilities implemented at the Jagiellonian University (95% of all student mobilities and 5% staff mobilities), as it reinforces multilingualism and the internationalization of the university and its organizational structure. The programme fosters maintenance of high academic standards and facilities the exchange of experiences and best practice. Thanks to that it corresponds with the university’s strategy of development and internationalization, enabling optimal academic growth, continuous improvement of the quality of teaching and services offered by the JU (including administrative services). The implemented mobilities raise cross-cultural awareness of the participants based on Europe’s heritage and cultural diversity, which has a huge impact on the promotion of a tolerant attitude and understanding, not only at the university, but also in the society in accordance with European Union’s ideas. In the academic year 2015/2016, 732 students from 32 countries carried out an exchange at the Jagiellonian University. The highest number of students came from Germany, Spain, Italy and France. Students were given support support on each stage of their mobility by the ISMO, ESN (one of the best sections in Europe) that were organizing a rich cultural-adaptive programme. A nearly 100% mobility participant’s satisfaction is encouraging us to create new forms of support and to maintain contacts with graduates – our ambassadors in Europe. We are running a group on Facebook, which serves as a platform for students to exchange experiences and opinions on their motilities. In total 853 student mobilities were carried out within the scope of the programme, including 699 outgoing mobilities for studies (SMS) and 154 traineeships mobilities. Students went on an exchange to 215 higher education institutions from 31 countries. Most often they were choosing universities in Germany, Spain, France and Italy. In case of traineeships, students went to 144 receiving institutions from 25 countries. Most often they were choosing institutions in Spain, United Kingdom, Germany and Italy.Students indicated that they have learned to manage difficult and problematic situations, to plan and implement work schedule and to think and analyze information in a critical way. Students were prepared for departure through numerous informational meetings and by taking part in the “JUStart with Erasmus+” programme that has been created especially for them students and that consists of workshops focused on psychology, communication, soft skills and planning, as well as intensive language courses “Academic Writing”. In total 243 workers of the JU went on an exchange, among them there were 149 teaching mobilities implemented and 94 training mobilities. Due to a very high interest (258 applications), we have resigned to reimburse travel costs in order to increase the number of mobilities. Academic teachers during their stay at a partner institution, apart from carrying out lectures for students, had the chance to learn more about the implementation of the academic process, gain experience in teaching in a multicultural environment, to observe and implement best practice in the field of education, to work out new teaching methods and to establish other forms of cooperation. Apart from teaching mobilities, academic staff also took part in training mobilities, during which they had the chance to develop professional competences and to enhance skills necessary to operate in a society based on knowledge. Central and faculty administrative staff, technical workers, librarians and language teachers have participated in training mobilties, during which they were taking part in trainings that helped them develop their professional qualifications related to their job positions in their unit. The highest number of participants went to partner institutions in Italy and Spain. From the 2-th of June until the 24th of June 2016, the Erasmus+ Staff Training Week has been organized for the third time. The training was addressed to administrative workers from partner institutions whose work is related to international cooperation and services offered for students and staff in the field of mobility. Thirty participants of the training had a chance to exchange experiences related to internationalization and cross-cultural dialogue. As a results of the project of staff mobility is staff’s increased interest in exchange of experiences with partner universities and an opening for cooperation with external institutions. A high quality of the implemented mobilities and its high need are confirmed by an overall 100% participant satisfaction. Dissemination of this opinion among JU’s academic community, through the ambassadors of Erasmus+ results in a growing interest in mobility programmes and other paths of career development.
