The Antwerp Maritime Academy strongly believes that Erasmus + mobility helps individuals increase their professional, social and intercultural skills.During the academic year 2017-2018 2 students (SMS), 6 teachers (STA & STT) and 1 staff member (STT) went abroad. The Antwerp Maritime Academy also welcomed 1 incoming student (SMS) and 1 incoming staff member (STT).To ensure the quality of the outgoing mobilities each student and teacher is personally informed and supervised by the Coordinator International Relations. The coordinator assists them before, during and after their mobility. Practical and up-to-date information on student and staff mobility is also available online; on the website, on BlackBoard (internal communication platform) for students; and on theInternal Quality Tool for teachers. The Coordinator International Relations also takes care of the incoming students and teachers. He prepares their mobility with colleagues from the international office of the partner institution. Once the student/teacher arrives in Antwerp, he/she can always contact the coordinator for help. The coordinator acts as an intermediary between the incoming student and the teaching staff and the student administration. All actual practice is in accordance with the policy outlined. The Antwerp Maritime Academy's international dimension focuses on student, teacher and staff mobility, cooperation for curriculum development and research, and participation in projects with institutions in other countries. The ultimate objective is to offer our students and staff as many opportunities as possible to allow them to obtain an open and globalvision, enhancing self-assuredness and enabling them to function in an open-minded and discussion-oriented manner within a multicultural environment. In its search for partner institutions, the Antwerp Maritime Academy identifies institutions with comparable missions. Inter-institutional agreements are based on a comprehensive understanding of the partner institution, compatibility of academic profiles and a relationship of trust. With partner institutions on the same wavelength, students and teachers are guaranteed successful mobility. The Antwerp Maritime Academy will continue to motivate students and teachers to go abroad. With the labour market requiring graduates to have international, foreign language and intercultural skills, our institution places great importance on internationalisation. We want to provide the most relevant education to our students, who will become the citizens, entrepreneurs and seafarers of tomorrow. The Antwerp Maritime Academy is also looking forward to continuing to receive students and teachers from its partner institutions. We are convinced that mobility is an ameliorating experience for students and teachers. Incoming and outgoing students and teachers are the best ambassadors to attract future applicants. They share their experience and inspire others.

During the academic year 2014-2015 5 students (SMS), 5 teachers (STA) and 1 staff member (STT) went abroad, which means that all planned mobility numbers were achieved. It was our ambition to send more students abroad and we succeeded: in the academic years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 we sent 1 students abroad, in the academic year 2014-2015 5 students. To ensure the quality of the outgoing mobilities each student and teacher is personally informed and supervised by the coordinator international relations. The project on which we report here originated as an outcome of a long-standing research collaboration on biocorrosion between the three partner institutes. We realised that by bringing interested staff together in an exchange project with an educational/didactic point of view, we could strengthen these ties, and contribute to common internationalisation aspirations in our three institutes: to enhance our institutional network, to enhance and modernise our teaching capacity, and to provide (for the Ukrainian partners) opportunities to develop better skills at communication in English. The objectives of the project were:1. to create international courseware on biological aspects of corrosion. 2. to look for a common teaching language. 3. to improve teacher skills among the participants.4. to provide a stronger network for the participantsThe practical aim was to provide a Train the Trainer course on biocorrosion (building on our ongoing common research interests), for 10 Ukrainian staff members (to be trained) and several members of the staff in Antwerp (all Ph D students, post-docs and tenured teaching staff). This course was organised by a coordinating team of three staff members, one from the three partner institutes, with the Antwerp side delivering the electrochemical knowledge and the teaching methodology, and the Ukrainian partners on the biological aspects. The different chapters in the course were prepared in a series of mutual visits of the coordinating team, leading to the course programme as added to the Annexes. Each chapter was then worked out using a suitable didactic model, in order to cover a wide array of practical methods (as well as some background and the opportunity to discuss the methods in class). Also, we sought an equilibrium between (interactive) lectures, seminars and group activities among the participants (including staff from Antwerp), and practical (hands-on) lab activities (e.g. on the analysis of anti-corrosive paint, and on the use of cheap Arduino-style electronics in a class setting). Cultural visits (Antwerp port, Antwerp Port HQ, Bruges and Antwerp culture) were foreseen to enable the participants to form ties with the Antwerp staff in an informal setting, and attention was given to an introduction into intercultural communication and its challenges. The chapters were tested among the coordinating team to ensure that at least on that level, everything was clearly understood. Finally, the Train the Trainer course took place in the first half of April 2019, at Antwerp Maritime Academy. The response of the participants indicates that most of the objectives (see below, par. 4) were achieved, as they reported an increase in their linguistic skills, the strength of their network and networking skills, their interest and enthusiasm for interactive teaching. Over the summer, several participants have developed ways to implement these newfound didactic competences into their own courses (Kahoot quizzes, a new style of lecturing,...), and have used their new network to come up with novel projects, irrespective of any funding so far. In the long run, we believe that the exchange in this project will not only help to modernise the didactic experience of the staff involved, but also encourage them to take part in more exchanges (and to set some up themselves).
