This project complies with the Strategic Development Plan for the University of Beira Interior (UBI) (2012-2020) and the Rector's Action Plan (2013-2017). It was implemented in line with the commitments made in the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education, the Erasmus Policy Statement, and the five priorities of the higher education modernization agenda.Focusing on SMS, SMP, STA and STT mobility activities, the project sought to consolidate and, where possible, enhance the flow of participants to and from UBI, adopting measures and procedures that best fitted the realization of the planned mobility. Qualitatively all objectives were achieved, quantitatively the results were mixed: while the SMS mobility was underachieved the SMP mobility was exceeded. The project had multiple and positive impacts on both the participants and UBI that influenced the latter's relationship with national and European partners, contributing to the fulfilment of its international strategy and standing. There was a multiplier effect embodied in other projects and many of the activities undertaken were highlighted in local and regional media.

    Funder Contribution: 50,000 EUR

This project aims to build a center for debate, research, and teaching on European topics in the interior of Portugal, promoting the sharing of educational content with the UBI student population and the community of the Beira Interior region. We want to transform the Chair into a center for asserting citizenship and European identity, and we built the project based on a solid process of institutional consolidation at the host university, on a capacity to create synergies with local/regional entities and international partners (UNITA Alliance and Erasmus+ ICM partners). One of the UBI pillars and missions is to promote equal opportunities, and the Chair aims to allow students and citizens to participate in the curricula internationalization process. The focus is to establish active European citizenship that promotes the fundamental freedoms listed in the Treaty of the EU. Access to information, training opportunities, and internationalization is a decisive step toward mitigating the natural barriers faced by populations and institutions from rural and mountainous areas (European Strategy for Inclusion and Diversity). This proposal focuses on three key elements to understand European democracy: political systems, political participation, and media in the EU. These elements are very relevant to support and ensure a new push for European democracy, ensuring territorial cohesion and citizen involvement in politics. Europe is facing a problem with limited participation in democratic life and low levels of knowledge and awareness of European affairs and their effect on the lives of all European citizens, associated with a growing manipulation of the media and influence of social networks as priority information channels. With this first Chair in the interior region of Portugal, we try to contribute to the strength of the European identity and participation in democratic processes, reinforcing the EU future and the EU presence in the country.

Considering the significance of internationalization for Higher Education Institutions process affirmation and consolidation, the University of Beira Interior (UBI) has been seeking to develop its internationalization strategy through solid, coherent and innovative partnerships, both academically and in a aspect of integration of the knowledge of the University in the work context. The affirmation and projection of UBI in the international scenario constitutes one of the fundamental pillars for its sustainability, which is why we have sought to maximize the opportunities for internationalization resulting from the institution's integration into the European education system, since 1986.UBI became involved in this program as it has been a university for over two decades in the traditional Erasmus+KA103 Program and we welcome the possibility of exporting the Erasmus concept to our partner universities outside the EU, where institutional relations in some cases are much stronger than with some of our traditional EU partners. Participating in KA107 allowed the development of such indicators. UBI, together with partner institutions under the International Credit Mobility Program, managed to carry out 37 student mobilities and 71 technical and teacher mobilities, making a total of 108 . These mobilities allowed teachers, technicians and students to foster cultural and social exchanges, deepen institutional relations between the various partners, with a view to continuing cooperation outside the ICM Program, the implementation of scientific projects between UBI professors and professors of the various partner institutions and increase the internationalization indexes, in accordance with the objectives of 2020 Agenda. They also make possible, in the case of professors, to create scientific articles between partner institutions and co-supervision in master's and doctoral degrees.
