A R&D Unit in Life Cycle Analysis of Welded Industrial Products and Components, hosted by ISQ and promoted by FCT, has as main objective the development of skills that contribute to increase the technical and scientific quality of the national scientific system and industrial competitiveness. The unit of R&D promotes on one hand, the intellectual and scientific enrichment of the associated researchers, which will improve the technical standards of the scientific group and thus improve the quality of the provided services, on the other hand contributes to the increase of productivity and competitiveness through the development of national Research Projects oriented to the industry, which are developed in close collaboration with industrial companies,universities and other reserach organisations. The R&D Unit in Life Cycle Analysis of Welded Industrial Products and Components intends to expand its areas of activity and competence, trough the development and application at a wide level of structural testing for components for the aerospace and wind turbines, by developing technology and materials for petroleum exploration, by developing of hybrid welding processes for new materials testing and by applying strategies of remediation of contaminated soil using nanoparticles. Thus, the strategic plan of the R&D Unit for 2015-2020 presents itself as a consolidation of skills already acquired by the activities undertaken in the previous period, promoting new ideas and new projects in line with the European strategy for the promoted Research by Horizon 2020 and the Regional Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation 2014-2020. A Unidade de I&D em Análise de Ciclo de Vida de Produtos e Componentes Industriais Soldados do ISQ, promovida pela FCT, tem como principal objectivo o desenvolvimento de competências que contribuam para o aumento da qualidade técnico-científica do Sistema Científico e Tecnologico Nacional e da competitividade industrial. A Unidade de I&D promove o enriquecimento intelectual e cientifico dos investigadores associados, melhorando assim os padrões técnico-científicos do grupo e dessa forma a qualidade dos serviços prestados; contribui igualmente para o aumento da produtividade e competitividade nacionais através do desenvolvimento de Projectos de Investigação orientados para a indústria, que são desenvolvidos em estreita colaboração com empresas, universidades e outros organismos de investigação nacionais e internacionais. A Unidade de I&D pretende ampliar as suas áreas de actividade e competência, no desenvolvimento de ensaios estruturais a larga escala de componentes para a aeronáutica e turbinas eólicas, desenvolvimento de tecnologia e materiais para exploração petrolífera, soldadura híbrida de novos materiais bem como na remediação de solos contaminados utilizando nanoparticulas. Desta forma, o projecto estratégico para 2015-2020 da Unidade de I&D, apresenta-se como uma consolidação das competências já adquiridas nas actividades realizadas pela Unidade no período transacto, promovendo novas ideias e novos projectos em linha com a estratégia Europeia para a Investigação promovida pelo Horizonte 2020 bem como pela Estratégia Regional de Inovação para a Especialização Inteligente 2014-2020.

Within the framework of the strategy of internationalisation of the Internationaler Bund, one of Germany' s largest provider of VET training and education, it shall be reached that every VET center of the IB Süd carries out at least one international exchange per year. Based on experiences from other strategic Erasmus+ projects on work based learning, this project aims at carrying out preparatory and fact-finding measures by sending staff to international partners. The focus point of the job shadowing experiences in Croatia and Poland was to get to know new ways, methods and concepts for enabling especially disadvantaged young people to participate in mobility experiences abroad and to integrate these methods and concepts into our organisation. In addition the international activities were intensified and sustainable partnerships established.

The R&D Unit in Life Cycle Analysis of Welded Industrial Products and Components is hosted by ISQ, the largest and relevant technological institution in Portugal working in several activities, namely: environment and security, energy, metrology, materials, industrial automation, maintenance and structural integrity of equipments, non-destructive testing, industrial organization, quality and training. The Unit is coordinated by a member of the Board of Directors of the Home Institution (PhD. Oliveira Santos). The unit has three subunits which comprises a number of researchers with common objectives and research fields, each one coordinated by a nominated senior researcher, as presented below: a) Materials Processing: Joining Technologies and Non Destructive Testing – PhD. Helena Gouveia; b) Materials and Materials Behaviour and Characterisation – PhD. Gervásio Pimenta; c) Sustainable Environment and Safety – PhD.(Mrs. Silvia Garcia has replaced PhD. Susana Almeida in the coordination of the subunit due his move to another institution in the year of 2008). Each subunit has a multidisciplinary team made by ISQ Senior collaborators, PhD. Students, Master Science Degree students, and technical staff in order to accomplish the sub-unit research activities. Each subunit develops a number of research projects; a brief description of those projects (is in point 3.2.3 of this project), each one lead by the respective Unit Senior Researcher, which is responsible for the management of the human resources, facilities, equipments needed to fulfil project activities. These groups are technically supported by the host institution staff (more than 1000 employees). A Scientific Board with the participation of all the Unit researchers chaired by the Unit Manager meet on a regular basis, at least twice a year with the responsibility of definition, evaluation, and approval of: - Annual Activities Plan; - Annual Budget Plan; - Annual Activities Report. The scientific board was created by internal communication from the Board of Directors of the host institution which meet whenever it is necessary. A Unidade de I & D em Análise de Ciclo de Vida de Produtos e Componentes Industriais Soldados funciona no ISQ, a maior e mais relevante instituição tecnológica em Portugal, com diversas áreas de atividades, nomeadamente: ambiente e segurança, energia, metrologia, materiais, automação industrial, manutenção e integridade estrutural de equipamentos, ensaios não-destrutivos, organização industrial, qualidade e formação. A Unidade é coordenada por um membro do Conselho de Administração da instituição de origem (PhD Oliveira Santos). A unidade possui três subunidades que compreendem vários investigadores com objetivos e áreas de investigação comuns, cada uma coordenada por um investigador sênior: a) Processamento de Materiais: tecnologias de união e ensaios não destrutivos - PhD. Helena Gouveia; b) Materiais e Comportamento e Caracterização de Materiais - PhD. Pimenta Gervásio; c)Ambiente sustentável e Segurança - PhD (Sra. Silvia Garcia substituiu PhD Susana Almeida na coordenação da subunidade por esta ter mudado para outra instituição no ano de 2008)... Cada subunidade possui uma equipe multidisciplinar formada por colaboradores seniores do ISQ, estudantes de doutoramento e mestrado e tecnicos para realizar as atividades de investigação da sub-unidade. Cada subunidade desenvolve uma série de projetos de investigação (uma breve descrição dos mesmos é apresentada no ponto 3.2.3 deste projecto), coordenados pelo Investigador senior de cada uma, que é responsável pela gestão dos recursos humanos, instalações e equipamentos necessários para levar a cabo as atividades do projeto. Estes grupos são tecnicamente apoiada pela equipe da instituição de acolhimento (mais de 1000 trabalhadores). Um Conselho Científico, integrando todos os investigadores da Unidade, presidido pelo Coordenador da Unidade, reune regularmente, pelo menos duas vezes por ano com a responsabilidade de definição, avaliação e aprovação de: - Plano anual de actividades; - Plano de Orçamento Anual; - Relatório Anual de Atividades. O conselho científico foi criado por comunicação interna do Conselho de Administração do ISQ, que reune sempre que necessário.
