JustWATER will uncover exactly where in Italy export-led irrigation agriculture is exploiting the most vulnerable groundwaters and water-scarce areas, identifying bad virtual water GIS hotspots. JustWATER is a research aimed at providing Italian water experts and water decision-makers with a set of tools for informed actions in the realm of the hydro politics of the country. JustWATER connects irrigation patterns to crop-exports trends in Italy, producing GIS maps, graphic charts and socio-economic data to enhance water-related decision-making through virtual water analysis. The novelty of this research is the connection among sub-national levels of analysis (regional and district level) to global virtual water flows, exploring their social and environmental effects and paying attention to gender issues. Exploring the connection between irrigation trends and patterns of agricultural exports will lead to better understanding national water politics in Italy and can be replicated in other drought-prone EU countries. The researcher will get training and knowledge transfer, enhancing her employability and career prospects; the project will enhance the visibility of University of Bergamo in the forefront institutions that are active in both virtual water issues and water & gender enquiry, thanks to the gender-transformative tools enacted by the project. Interdisciplinary in nature, JustWATER will draw upon insights from Human Geography, Political Economy and Political Ecology. Introducing the sub-national scale of analysis constitutes a substantial theoretical innovation in the virtual water literature, which has so far concentrated on the global and national scale. JustWATER will provide policy-oriented tools and end-users data to serve citizen science and open science practices, allowing not only interoperability of research outputs, but also replicability in other countries.

It aims as well at improving the transversal skills of the teaching staff in order to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning, as also stated by the three-year Strategic Plan of the University 2017-2019 to ""UniBG 20.20"" (2017). The 2016-18 ICM project involved 3 Russian partners(Pushkin Leningrad State University, Higher School of Economics - Niznhy Novgorod, ""Ural Federal University Named After the First President of Russia B.N.Yeltsin ""), 2 Chinese (Nanjing Normal University and Dalian University of Foreign Languages), 1 Israeli (Ort Braude College). The project has allowed us Through the consolidation and expansion of the relations of the University of Bergamo with the Chinese, Russian and Israelis HEI's, to respond to a need for continuity with the teaching activities in Chinese and Russian present in the Department of Languages, as well as the will for educational cooperation and research with China and Russia, expressed by others departments. Regarding the Israeli partner, the project has been the first opportunity to involve students in the relationship with a subject very similar to the University of Bergamo in terms of age and dynamism. As per the approved project, there have been planned and carried out mobility of students (1st and 2nd level), faculty staff (linguistic and engineering area) and technical administrative staff (of different areas). 68 mobilities have been carried out by students (100% of the scholarships available), 15 of which outgoing and 44 incoming; in order to guarantee reciprocity towards China, the University of Bergamo with its own funds has financed 30 grants for students in mobility towards the Chinese Universities . As for the mobility for teaching there were funded 14 flows, 8 outgoing (4 to China and 4 to Israel) and 6 incoming (1 Chinese, 4 Russian, 1 Israeli); finally 8 administrative colleagues were involved, 5 outgoing (3 towards China, 2 to Russia) and 3 incoming (2 Chinese and 1 Russian). From the point of the quantitative view the objective of student mobility has been completely achieved; in particular it is worth noting that, considering the impossibility of assigning the last 4 scholarships for Chinese students, the available budget was destined to extend more the ongoing mobility.Furthermore, regarding the mobility with Ort Braude, the partner, having no candidates and wanting to welcome students of Bergamo also in the second year of the project, proposed to transform a mobility from incoming to outgoing. The carried out teacher mobility was about 70% out of planned. Italian teachers preferred periods of mobility shorter than those required in the application, while the Chinese and Israeli ones, preferred longer mobility, in order to have the opportunity to teach in different contexts and degree courses. Always from the quantitative point, the technical-administrative staff mobility has been realised in percentage equal to 50%; in particular, it was implemented 62.5% of out-going mobility and 37.5% of incoming mobility (mainly from Chinese and Russian partners). From the qualitative point of view, there has been guaranteed an equal and fair treatment in the management of all the mobilities, both from the academic and administrative point of view. We put in place special services of support and monitoring (by identifying a resource dedicated exclusively to this project during the 2 years) and we released at the end of the mobility the relative certificates of the results achieved. At the end of the project, all the involved partners reported that they have noted an increase in the level of internationalization of the students as regards linguistic competence (language of the host country and English) both concerning the ability to understand and integrate in a lot of contexts different from their own and in the know-how to manage new intercultural situations. The administrative staff reported the effectiveness of the exchange of good practices with respect to the specific field of activity, the usefulness of the ideas emerged aiming at designing more effective services. The teachers report an increase of teaching skills in intercultural content and an enrichment of contacts for the launch of joint research projects. In particular, the Chinese partners have reported having increased capability to interact with the international academic community, key competence for the purposes of the university research strategy identified by the Chinese government."
