  • OPTIMUS: A Randomized Controlled Trial to Influence Sustained Glycaemic Control by Reducing Muscle Inactivity Time in Middle-Aged and Older Office Workers with Type 2 Diabetes

    Type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence is high among middle-aged and older (45-65 y) workers with a substantial impact on work productivity and inability to work. Time spent sitting, when the large lower limb muscle groups are inactive, is associated with prevalent diabetes and chronic hyperglycaemia. In this randomized controlled trial we will examine the effects of reducing muscle inactivity time on glycaemic control in office workers with T2D using health coaching, provision of a portable pedal machine (enables reductions in muscle inactivity time in a seated posture), and provision of an activity tracker and a Smartphone-based self-monitoring and behavioural prompting tool. We will test if this novel intervention will reduce EMG-measured muscle inactivity time and the metabolic risks of sitting. This study has the potential to change clinical and occupational health guidelines, so that they are specific to reducing the complications of a prevalent and serious disease.
