European rural areas will boost when their natural resources constitute the basis of innovative and sustainable value chains with a high positive economic impact. In this sense, forests constitute an asset that provide not only ecosystems and biodiversity, but also a valuable and sustainable raw material, “wood”. Wood is consumed by various sectors, including one of the most “raw materials” demanding sector, the construction. The BASAJAUN project is a puzzle composed of 1st and 2nd transformation companies, research organizations, associations and public bodies that are focused on maximizing the forest value through its use in wood construction. Its main goal is to optimize the wood forest resources to enable the construction of a medium sized building (16 dwellings with 4 floors) with the lowest possible forest hectares – that will depends on the tree species and the forest local peculiarities (climate, surface, ..). The whole process will be optimised to maximize the consumption of wood products from the forest (solid wood, fibers, veneers, bark, sawdust, etc.). For this purpose, a) innovative wood-based construction materials (thermal insulation, composites, varnishes, SIPs) and systems (structure, facades, floors, walls, roof and fixings) will be developed and upscaled, b) two full -scale demo buildings (Finland and France) that use those products will be constructed, c) digitalization of the whole construction value chain (from forest to building) will be done and d) the rural development impact will be studied at regional level. The environmental impact of the products of these value chains will be assessed as well. Besides, to assure a sustainable impact of the project a novel thematic platform to integrate the stakeholders of the wood region with urban areas will be developed. Besides, BASAJAUN leverages the previous results of successful projects where the innovative materials and systems were designed at laboratory and semi-industrial scale.

The EU has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Deployment of CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) from different industrial sectors across Europe is a powerful fast track approach to abate CO2 emissions. CO2 transport and injection are the essential links between capture sites and storage reservoirs. The goal of ENCASE is to contribute to a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly CO2 transport and well injection. ENCASE aims to continuously improve 7 world-leading CCS-related research infrastructures (RIs) in the consortium with state-of-the-art scientific instruments, tools and methods to be the backbone for research and development of CCS technologies. Co-development of technologies will enhance the capability of RIs, increase RI personnel’s competence and enable these RIs to better address and close key knowledge gaps. ENCASE will safeguard and increase the competitiveness of these European RIs through strong collaboration with the CCS infrastructure operators, service companies, academia, and SMEs. The RIs will be available for the industry/SMEs for prototyping their new equipment/technology, e.g., pumping concepts, metering technologies, and simulator tools for monitoring, controlling and predicting the CO2 streams with impurities. The high-quality data produced in ENCASE will lift the knowledge level of industry and academia, which will contribute to the development of innovative companies and the education of future workforce for the CCS industry. Social innovation labs and co-creation initiatives will be developed by involving different stakeholders to address specific societal needs and better integrate the RIs in the local communities. Our success will improve the design and operation of CCS infrastructures and meet the EU climate goals. Thus, the enhanced research capacity build by ENCASE will benefit scientific community, industry, policy-makers, environment and society.

Climate change is happening and the need for a higher performance crisis planning&command tools and new methodologies arises from the increasing frequency and impact of a variety of natural hazards, including floods, earthquakes, droughts, landslides, and wildfires that are responsible for dead, wounded, or displaced people and severe destruction and disruption of property and industry with clear impact on economy for years after the event. Natural disasters, which can be related with the 1,672 recorded disasters (Floods, storms, wildfires, heatwaves) in Europe between 1970 and 2019 that took 159,438 lives and impacted the economy in excess of 420M€. The objective of OVERWATCH is to develop an integrated holographic management system for response, recovery and mitigation of emergencies and disasters, by enabling the authorities to quickly deploy and manage air, water and ground assets and personnel through decision support tools integrated in an immersive and decentralized command platform. This system will be supported by combining several services already offered by EGNSS and Copernicus Emergency Management and Security (for example and HAS and SAR) with digital technologies, artificial intelligence, drones, 5G, augmented reality which will provide the required performance to make this system a valuable resource for citizen, land and infrastructure protection.

The FAIR2Adapt is a multidisciplinary project geared towards transforming data into actionable knowledge to shape climate adaptation strategies. By leveraging and collaborating with EOSC, we fully tap into the EOSC's wide range of services, the FAIR Implementation Framework Catalogue of Resources, and align with the EOSC interoperability framework. We adopt FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs) by using RO-Crate and nanopublications as key implementation tools. We use semantic bridging strategies, such as the I-ADOPT framework, and tailored FDO services to build a collaborative, user-friendly FAIR and open data sharing framework. Rich case studies will co-develop FAIR Supporting Resources in alignment with the FAIRification framework and demonstrate the impact of FAIR and open data sharing on climate change adaptation, and strategically support the EU Mission’s objective of enhancing climate resilience in European regions and communities. Through transfer cases and collaboration with other initiatives, FAIR2Adapt extends its reach to additional contexts, showcasing its scalability, sustainability and applicability beyond the project’s completion. A significant aspect of the FAIR2Adapt project is stakeholder engagement and capacity-building activities, which will be instrumental in raising awareness and devising customised solutions. By transforming data into flexible, practical, and resilient climate adaptation strategies, FAIR2Adapt constructs a scalable and extensible model for data sharing that can be adapted to multiple climate adaptation scenarios. The impact of FAIR2Adapt will span across scientific advancement, economic resilience, social-environmental wellbeing, and responsive policy development, fostering multidisciplinary cooperation, enhancing trust in science, and stimulating a climate-smart economy. Ultimately, FAIR2Adapt intends to build a more resilient, inclusive and knowledge-based society capable of efficiently tackling the challenges of climate change.
