ConnectingYouth is a six-month project (Jan.-Jun. 2017) meant to launch a long-term encompassing, interdisciplinary dialogue on youth, education and digital policy between partner organizations and schools from four EU countries (Croatia, Greece, Germany and Italy). The main societal challenges discussed are the gap between current local policies and international standards concerning the access of young people to an inclusive European labour market, and more specifically the lack of non-formal training for multicultural collaboration and the uneven access to ICT competences and facilities. Within the framework of the 5th Cycle of the Structured Dialogue, #ConnectingYouth selects two major aspects of the strategy to allow “all young people to engage in a diverse, connected and inclusive Europe”: intercultural and digital connectivity. The project aims at exploiting the full potential of K3 Structured Dialogue by bringing together all the stakeholders involved: 32 young people and 8 teachers from four European secondary schools are enabled to carry out a non-formal multidisciplinary debate with policy makers, youth workers, researchers, institutions from the cultural heritage and the digital market. The project aims at raising awareness about 1) the importance of a proactive attitude of young people towards their personal and professional growth in an increasingly multicultural, digital environment; 2) the necessity of an inclusive, participated process of decision making to face societal challenges; 3) the necessity of bridging the gap between local, national and European levels in youth and education policy; 4) the potential of digital strategies and competences in the promotion of economic competitiveness and of cultural integration. The project has been organized in four phases: 0) preparation (from present date to Dec. 2016), 1) national phase (Jan. – March 2017), 2) International Workshop at Villa Vigoni (Activity 1; Menaggio, Como; 18-23 April 2017) and 3) conclusive activities (both at national and international level) including the communication and dissemination of the results, preparation of new projects and evaluation (May-June 2017). Activity 1 is the core of the project and the one for which funding was requested. All activities have been based on non-formal educational methods. Even when the communication of basic information is necessary (especially during phase 1), this has taken place through interactive workshops allowing young people and the other participants to actively interact in a cooperative and problem-solving environment. This approach has made young people able to experiment with, and to strengthen their social intelligence; intercultural empathy; language and communication, management, and of course digital skills. It has also made them more confident in their capacity to actively communicate ideas with their peers and to interact with adults in the participated process of decision making concerning youth and education policy. Young participants have been stimulated to play a leading role in the evaluation of the project activities as well as of their learning outcomes. At the end of the project, participants and especially young people have developed a more conscious understanding of the methods by which they can promote a connected, comprehensive, inclusive and dynamic vision of learning, and of the opportunities offered in this direction by the EU. They have become more aware of the opportunities and weaknesses of the social and educational background in which they live and operate and of the necessity to bridge the gap between local, national and European levels. The project has delivered an open-source digital policy booklet illustrating the methodologies of #ConnectingYouth and the project’s recommendations for future interventions in the fields of youth, education and digital citizenship for the local, national and European level.

Degradation of a cultural artefact depends on the environmental stress over time, especially during fluctuating environmental conditions, and the reactive behaviours of the materials of its composition. For an effective preventive conservation (PC) it is key to consider the historic environmental stress and degradation kinetics of the different materials (and their synergies) and monitor the artefact at all times. However, due to the heterogeneity of the material nature of the artefacts, this requires expensive monitoring as well as specialized personnel, out of reach for most, small to medium sized museums. CollectionCare will develop an innovative PC decision support system targeting the needs of small-medium sized museums. It will integrate IoT monitoring of the microclimatology of each artefact at any place, either at display, storage, handling or transport, integrated with multi-scale modelling for the different artefact materials while complying with current PC norms and recommendations. We will integrate latest advances in sensoring electronics, LPWAN wireless communication, multi-scale and multi-material degradation knowledge, big data and cloud computing into a single affordable system, adapted to the specific needs and resources of small museums and collections. The solution will built on the knowledge of different renown research groups and companies in the fields of PC (KADK, TU/e, LSIWC, UW, URO1, JHI and UPV), cloud computing and big data (ATOS), IoT connectivity (SGF), wireless sensoring (UPV, URO1), artefact transport (CBC, HvK), collection management (PS) as well as a large number of museums to guarantee future market acceptance (DFA-Spain, KMKG-Belgium, IVC-Spain, OAML-Latvia, IEEE-Greece, RDC-Denmark). The project will also count on a strong International Cooperation by an external Advisory Board of experts with prominent professional background from prestigious institutions and enterprises like: GCI, CCI, ICCROM, ICOMOS, Hispania Nostra and AXA ART.
