The new generation of mobile networks, which is expected to be commercialized by 2030, are envisioned to offer much wider range of applications comparing to 5G by interconnecting billions of IoT devices such as extended reality devices, wearable displays, drones, and autonomous vehicles. Definitely, the unprecedented growth of 6G-enabled IoT devices along with the massive emergence of connections in the future 6G communication platform will increase the security vulnerabilities for the 6G-enabled massive IoT networks, leading to a wide spectrum of known and unknown security threats. Therefore, there is an urgent need for developing novel security solutions for massive IoT networks, taking always into consideration their resource-constrained limitations, before they gain the trust of all involved stakeholders and reach their full potential in the 6G era. Toward this direction, REACT aims to develop a simulation-based framework for measuring and modeling the impact of attacks on 6G-enabled massive IoT networks. The proposed simulation-based framework is envisaged to be the first comprehensive IoT security solution which will (a) become publicly available to the IoT security research and industry community for reproducible experimentation and reusability purposes, and (b) also have a high scientific impact by contributing significantly to the efforts against the urgent need for novel security solutions to protect the upcoming 6G-enabled massive IoT networks.

On the other hand, an ageing population raises major financial and social challenges. One in four (25%) persons living in Europe could be aged 65+ by 2050. The greater expectancy of life in Europe is posing serious challenges to healthcare, namely through the associated increasing incidence of various diseases, as well as health conditions, which the elderly are mostly prone. One of the latter conditions is bone fractures, which can typically occur as a consequence of osteoporosis. Furthermore, the consequences of associated complications in fracture recovering include further costs, not only for the patient but also for the European society in general. To address such growing issue, the multidisciplinary consortium of ROBUST takes this as a challenging use case for demonstrating the relevance and proficiency of smart mobile eHealth systems as innovative solutions to address surging issues in our ageing society. ROBUST targets developing a new concept and platform for remote monitoring of patients’ healing process, in the eHealth domain. An integrated mobile eHealth system will be devised exploiting recent advances in RF-based sensing technologies, which are being investigated in this consortium. The system will be able to respond promptly to dynamic and complex situations, while preserving control, safety and privacy, in a reliable and energy efficiency manner. The ROBUST system will include a fast feedback loop that dynamically processes sensing information to generate, accordingly, instructions to the patient, encompassing cognitive and learning capabilities as well. ROBUST is committed to create an exceptional network, which is multidisciplinary and intersectoral in nature, for staff exchange in the mobile eHealth field, namely targeting structure training and knowledge sharing towards enhancing the European innovation capacity in relevant eHealth systems and applications.

Fundamental innovation will be sought through merging of the enabling concepts of optical layer virtualization, high frequency mm-wave transmission, multiple antenna technology, cell densification, terra-over-fiber (ToF) based femtocell connectivity and cloud radio access network (C- RAN) architecture. EWOC will aim at high capacity, low latency communications (40-90 GHz frequency), providing the basis for a 50-fold improvement over the 5G baseline. This necessitates development of novel, femto-cell technology, and seamless coexistence with first round legacy deployment. Such scenario also requires novel channel models and simulation methodologies to attain the desired trade-off between coverage, throughput and densification limits. EWOC will rely on fiber-optic deployment towards ToF connectivity, as an “added on feature” for the C-RAN architecture supporting resource management of versatile services with varying demands. Scenario compliant optical fronthaul virtualisation techniques, designed to provide cost effective beyond state-of-the-art resource optimisation, will be pursued through novel optical transceiver schemes and software defined network-based digital signal processing techniques. Research and training disciplines will serve as building blocks towards the scientific and socio-economic goals of increased capacity, coverage, flexibility, spectral efficiency, cost effectiveness, vendor agnosticism, and upgradability. EWOC provides a framework for promotion of such interdisciplinary innovation, with strong interoperability of models and methodologies from different disciplines. As such, EWOC training network is designed to foster opportunities for scientific and professional growth of ESRs from both topical and inter-disciplinary standpoints.

This is very evident in healthcare - where systems watch over your health - as well as in traffic - where autonomous driving solutions are gradually taking over control of the car. The accuracy and timeliness of the decisions depend on the systems’ ability to build a good understanding of both you and your environment, which relies on observations and the ability to reason on them. This project will bring perception sensing technologies like Radar, LiDAR and Time of Flight cameras to the next level, enhancing their features to allow for more accurate detection of human behaviour and physiological parameters. Besides more accurate automotive solutions ensuring driver vigilance and pedestrian and cyclist safety, this innovation will open up new opportunities in health and wellbeing to monitor elderly people at home or unobtrusively assess health state. To facilitate building the complex smart sensing systems envisioned and ensure their secure and reliable operation, the new Distributed Intelligence paradigm will be embraced, enhanced and supported by tools. It leverages the advantages of Edge and Cloud computing, building on the distributed computational resources increasingly available in sensors and edge components to distribute also the intelligence. The goal of this project is to develop next generation smart perception sensors and enhance the distributed intelligence paradigm to build versatile, secure, reliable, and proactive human monitoring solutions for the health, wellbeing, and automotive domains The project brings together major industrial players and research partners to address top challenges in health, wellbeing, and automotive domains through three use cases: integral vitality monitoring for elderly and exercise, driver monitoring, and providing safety and comfort for vulnerable road users at intersections.
