<< Background >>The subject of security is a central aspect of the process of European integration. Since the Lisbon Treaty, security plays a key role both in the Common Foreign and Security Policy and in the European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. In light of these dynamics, this Project intended to support activities of information and dissemination of knowledge and skills with regard to the subject of security and its role in the process of European integration.<< Objectives >>The objective of the project was to spread information and to disseminate knowledge and skills in the subject of security among the different actors involved, notably through the production of the following outputs:a)identification of historical, statistical, social and economic data;b)assessment of the economic, social and security implications posed by such data;c)identification and critical analysis of the legal instruments used and/or usable in order to boost security<< Implementation >>The project consisted of one opening event (presentation of the project), three general conferences, three thematic workshops and one final event (conclusion of the project). In particular, the conferences were dedicated to the main flows related to the subject of security (migrants, data and money), while the workshops focused on specific aspects, such as integration, genetic and health data, ethnic data.<< Results >>The organization of the planned activities allowed to improve the skills concerning security in the European Union of a number of different actors (policy-makers, business representatives, staff of public administration and, in general, stakeholders). Moreover, the publications made during the project (one edited book, one monograph book and two proceedings) strenghtened the impact of the project on the academic world and on the civil society.

The planned activities of the CIRCEA project revolved around the improvement of the experience of the MA in Public and Cultural Diplomacy and its chair in International Relations. Actions were designed to combine traditional teaching methods with new learning and debating activities and offer an opportunity for students to interact with policymakers and cultural practitioners. One main activity and three additional activities were envisaged: Main activityTraining course. The main activity planned was deepening the teaching of European Union studies embodied in the official curriculum of the Master in Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Department of social, political, and cognitive sciences at the University of Siena. The action was meant to revolve around the course of International Relations held by the Chair Holder (Prof. Pierangelo Isernia) to first-year students of the Master (2nd cycle). The planned training consisted of 100 hours, divided into:-60 hours of taught class in IR with a specific focus on understanding the role cultural and public diplomacy play in international relations and the increasing role culture plays in EU external relations; -40 hours of simulation game, which was expected to build on the design, development, and implementation of a new learning tool, i.e. an innovative role-play simulation about the role of the EU institutional bodies involved in foreign policy. In more detail, students would simulate the procedures that accompany the release of a joint communication on issues of international cultural relations to the European Parliament and the Council. To enrich the experience, it was proposed to connect the 40 hours simulation game with the European Parliament working simulation organised by Europe Direct (ED) at the University of Siena. Additional activities•Three seminars on the shaping up and implementation of the EU strategy for international cultural relations, one per academic year, open to the students of the Master programme, students of other departments, and young researchers (PhD Students) at the University of Siena and other universities. Each seminar was to be devoted to one of the pillars of the Strategy: Supporting culture as an engine for sustainable social and economic development, Promoting culture and inter-cultural dialogue for peaceful inter-community relations, and Reinforcing cooperation on cultural heritage.•An international conference on the role of culture in EU external relations is to be held at the end of the 2nd year (2021) in continuity with the objectives and format of the EUNIC Siena Cultural Relations Forums 2017 and 2019. The conference was planned to target researchers and scholars in all disciplines relating to the cultural aspects of international relations, national and international (from other EU MS and EU institutions) policy-makers, national and international NGOs and CSOs representatives;•A two-day summer workshop on the role of culture in EU external relations. The workshop was meant to occur following the international conference (Siena Cultural Relations Forum 2021). Distinguished scholars and skilled practitioners attending the Forum were expected to be part of the teaching staff. The workshop was open to 2nd cycle and PhD students at the University of Siena and other universities and a selected number of national practitioners. In terms of deliverables, CIRCEA was also expected to deliver a website devoted to the project, as required by the action; regular newsletters; and a professional journal special issue on the role of culture in EU’s external relations.

The project aims at developing a multi-departmental course on the role of the EU in relation to sustainability. In particular, the course would be accessible to students of a plurality of faculties and integrated into their current course of study. The course aims at integrating in-depth knowledge of the EU policy framework in the perspective of the 2030 Agenda. By combining the study of the EU’s role as a global political leader in the field of sustainability and global challenges relating to socio-economic inequalities and environmental change, the course is purposed to promote a deeper understanding of the pivotal role that the EU plays both on the global and national scale, in terms of policy-making for sustainability. This is to be done by developing a teaching programme with the European Green Deal as its core policy of interest, addressing the ways in which it targets issues of sustainability from an interdisciplinary (o multidisciplinary??) perspective. In order to do so, an analysis of the European Green Deal policy will be carried out in parallel with the study of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: To what extent do objectives and recommendations of the two policies overlap? Do they converge in reality? On the basis of facts dissemination and empirical evidence, the ambition is to enhance students’ awareness about EU’s actions in the field of sustainable development, especially of those students of departments which would not normally come into contact with European Studies, as well as the general public.Integrating the study of EU policy making from the perspective of socio-economic and environmental sustainability is a fundamental step in the direction of promoting European Studies and the 2030 Agenda in HE institutions.
