It forms the fourth phase of the FET flagship and is characterized by a continued transition towards higher technology readiness levels, without jeopardizing our strong commitment to fundamental research. Compared to the second core project, this phase includes a substantial increase in the market-motivated technological spearhead projects, which account for about 30% of the overall budget. The broader fundamental and applied research themes are pursued by 15 work packages and supported by four work packages on innovation, industrialization, dissemination and management. The consortium that is involved in this project includes over 150 academic and industrial partners in over 20 European countries.

It builds upon the results achieved in the ramp-up phase (2013 - 2016) and the first core project (2016 - 2018), and covers the period April 2018 - March 2020. The progress of the flagship follows the general plans set out in the Framework Partnership Agreement, and the second core project represents an additional step towards higher technology and manufacturing readiness levels. The Flagship is built upon the concept of value chains, one of which is along the axis of materials-components-systems; the ramp-up phase placed substantial resources on the development of materials production technologies, the first core project moved to emphasise components, and the second core project will move further towards integrating components in larger systems. This evolution is manifested, e.g., in the introduction of six market-motivated spearhead projects during the Core 2 project.

It leverages from the strength of EU digital microsystem and design to support a 100% made-in-Europe supply chain of solutions which encompass smart-textile integration as well as advanced AI-based edge-cloud data processing. In details the following outcomes are foreseen: - Textile integrated electronic systems for real-time monitoring of hearth, respiratory and movement parameters on-the-air and in-water through an interdisciplinary approach; - Semiconductor technologies which allow the re-use of micro-nano systems both in the sports and in the healthcare sectors; - Miniaturized devices allowing the capturing of bio-chemical parameters able to withstand harsh ambient conditions such as salt fogs, chlorine, detergents, high and low temperatures, etc. The following key activities are targeted: - Development, prototyping and demonstration of versatile sensors with edge AI features for improved precision and reliability, that can also be integrated in textiles as well as in smart wearable wrist-watches and in sport equipment and gears targeting also underwater applications; - Cloud-edge Artificial Intelligence combined approaches for reliable diagnosis of body parameters. This will comprise sensor’s self-learning, remote update, multi-sensing approaches based on sensor arrays; - Novel materials that support electronics printing in textiles with stretchability and self-healing capabilities. Societal benefits are foreseen in the transition to a healthier lifestyle by promoting regular physical activity through affordable tools and services for a large audience, including people with disabilities. Moreover, this will impact the smart/remote-healthcare sector which will benefit of the availability of low-cost microfabricated solutions for intelligent, versatile, connected body sensors.

Biosensors for e-health and smart tracking of sport and fitness are a class of devices that is dominating the consumer and professional market with an unprecedented growth. Despite the impressive capabilities of recent approaches, several prospective revolutionary improvements are still open points, mainly in relationship with four factors: sensing new biosignals and tracking new activity patterns; improving battery lifetime and energy management for continuous use; and secure, reliable and efficient data analysis with AI algorithms and connectivity with the IoT. H2TRAIN aims at advancing the state of the art in this respect, taking profit from the remarkable properties and synergistic potential of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) materials (1DM and 2DM), enabling more sensitive, efficient, and miniaturized biosensing capabilities within the established CMOS technology framework. This will contribute to the growth of e-health services assisted by AI and will fortify the development of Internet of Things (IoT) applications in health & wellbeing and digital society. H2TRAIN not only facilitates digital technology but also involves the development of new 1DM and 2DM-based devices for sensing, energy harvesting and supercapacitor storage. These innovations serve to integrate sport and health activities into IoT applications, making them accessible as wearable technology. H2TRAIN combines mature CMOS technology products for health and sport sensing with embedded intelligence as a cross-sectional technology. This combination offers a broad spectrum of technology demonstrators (TD) based on advanced sensors, such as tattoo sweat, C-reactive protein, cortisol and lactate.

The project concept is based on R&D in three technology domains (TDs): TD1 is dedicated to UXV perception capabilities, enabling an unmanned vehicle to observe the surrounding world, including e.g. radars, LiDARs and antennas, as well as IR, hyperspectral and electromagnetic sensing, and edge-could managing of related data. TD2 will focus in UXV mission management, enabling command and control, connectivity, location and positioning, cybersecurity and teaming needed for the complex operations by unmanned vehicles, also paving the way to autonomic vehicles. TD3 will focus in developing of 5 UxV platform capabilities; UAV, USV and 3 different UGVs. All the technology building blocks developed in TD1 and TD2 will be demonstrated both individually and on TD3 platforms in relevant civil security missions. The mission cases represent the different security needs of the civil society, including offshore, seaports, rail yards, energy substations, emergency sites, wildfires, search and rescue and crowd monitoring and teamed UxV operation. The results provide focused contributions to the SRIA 2024 topics. PROACTIF aims to ensure that Europe is well prepared for the whole range of different security challenges and emergency situations, with the aid of technologies that will be available in different geopolitical situations - technologies whose ownership and manufacturing capabilities are in Europe. The consortium includes 42 partners from 13 different countries: 18 SMEs, 11 LEs and 13 RTOs, covering the value chain from electronics packaging to sensors and components, data management, AI and cybersecurity, to UXV platforms to integrate them, and end users. The total budget is 42 M€.
