It offers a stepping stone approach towards the genetics clinic of the future, engaging all stakeholders involved in a process of mutual learning and information exchange. The GCOF project implements key Science with and for Society issues, ensuring that ethical reflection and stakeholder involvement do not occur in parallel, but are effectively integrated in the core of the project. It establishes a robust communication and implementation strategy that integrates the project’s outcomes and recommendations in research and clinical practices and policy processes, outlining opportunities for a more responsive health research and innovation system by: 1. Envisioning the Genetics Clinic of the Future (WP1) 2. Mapping out the concept of data control (WP2) 3. Considering ethical and legal dimensions in the consent framework (WP3) 4. Exploring novel models for use of clinical data in research and vice versa (WP4) 5. Initiating public engagement, mutual learning and dissemination (WP5) 6. Engaging policy makers (WP6) The consortium brings together 12 key partners from 10 countries across Europe who represent the breadth of stakeholders involved in the genetics clinic of the future: genomics research, clinical genetics, bioinformatics, public health, policy making, patient representation, education, commercial genetics and bioinformatics services, social research, communication, responsible innovation and ethics and law. The GCOF project connects to the major EU-initiatives in the field of personalised health and care. The consortium also represents a variety of organisation types, including research organisations, businesses, policy makers, civil society organisations, education establishments and science & society centres.

This will be accomplished by facilitating the fast and effective use of policy relevant research and innovation (R&I) findings for actors at national, regional and local level. The project has four specific objectives: 1) Map existing policy relevant European R&I findings with high potential to inform policy making for economic and social resilience, and to help address societal challenges at local level 2) Define a set of methodologies for testing in how far the identified R&I findings can inform policies addressing national, regional and local needs 3) Implement the testing methodologies through multi-stakeholder experiments across Europe in co-creation with stakeholders from research, policy, economy, civil society organisations as well as citizens 4) Develop a Knowledge Base of the successfully tested research findings with high capacity to inform policy actors and a Toolbox of methods for testing policy relevant research findings FUTURESILIENCE will set up 'Future Resilience Labs' to test policy relevant R&I findings through 10 pilot exercises: three pre-identified working on climate change, migration and the financial crisis and urban planning; and seven selected through an open call. During the experimentation, multiple stakeholders will discuss and test evidence-based strategies tailored to their specific context and matching their local needs, aiming at reducing vulnerabilities and increasing capacities to be prepared for multiple types of possible crisis. The project will be implemented by a robust consortium with know-how in the fields of resilience, R&I policy and crisis management as well as experience with various co-creation and participative methodologies and specifically hands-on experience with foresight, scenario planning, virtual simulation and agent-based modelling.

Already today, a wealth of patient and citizen information is available, but fragmented, and therefore not coming to its full utility and value. These personal data will complement and improve existing approaches for Patient-Centered Outcome Measures beyond those currently available in state-of-the-art platforms. The IMPROVE platform that the consortium will build will enable the smart use of patient input and patient generated evidence to 1) advance the role of patient preference and patient experience in the context of treatment selection, 2) improve medical device design based on patient preferences and experiences, and 3) facilitate faster market entry of patient-centric and cost-effective advanced integrated care solutions. Improved clinical adoption of Value Based Health Care, and enhanced return on research and innovation investments will be demonstrated in different care settings across the EU, for 10 use cases in at least 5 different disease areas (e.g., ophthalmology, oncology, cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation, and neurology). The use cases will be conducted using a large variety of implementation strategies, building on a design thinking approach, to optimally test the innovative framework of data gathering and translation into controlled change and action. In addition, a significant contribution from implementation science is planned to reach out to all stakeholders that are relevant for this initiative and maximise the impact to IMPROVE healthcare provision.
