It will build on multiple European initiatives for scalable computing, utilizing low- power processors and advanced nanotechnologies. ExaNoDe will draw heavily on the Unimem memory and system design paradigm defined within the EUROSERVER FP7 project, providing low-latency, high-bandwidth and resilient memory access, scalable to Exabyte levels. The ExaNoDe compute element aims towards exascale compute goals through: • Integration of the most advanced low-power processors and accelerators (across scalar, SIMD, GPGPU and FPGA processing elements) supported by research and innovation in the deployment of associated nanotechnologies and in the mechanical requirements to enable the development of a high-density, high-performance integrated compute element with advanced thermal characteristics and connectivity to the next generation of system interconnect and storage; • Undertaking essential research to ensure the ExaNoDe compute element provides necessary support of HPC applications including I/O and storage virtualization techniques, operating system and semantically aware runtime capabilities and PGAS, OpenMP and MPI paradigms; • The development of a hardware emulation of interconnect to enable the evaluation of Unimem for the deployment of multiple compute elements and to leverage the potential of the ExaNoDe approach for HPC applications. Each aspect of ExaNoDe is aligned with the goals of the ETP4HPC. The work will be steered by first-hand experience and analysis of high-performance applications and their requirements; investigations being carried out with “mini-application” abstractions and the tuning of their kernels.

Such an uptake will deliver improved design processes, better products and services, and improved competitiveness. For the European Union as a whole this means improved employment opportunities and economic growth. The importance of advanced ICT to the competitiveness of both large and small companies in the engineering and manufacturing domain is well established. Despite early successes in this area, there are still many barriers to the uptake of such solutions, not least of which are the initial cost and complexity of adoption, particularly in the context of challenging trading conditions. This proposal targets the ICT Innovation for Manufacturing SMEs (I4MS) action line (Phase 2) and builds on Phase 1 of that initiative. Phase 2 addresses the adoption of next generation ICT advances in the manufacturing domain. At the core of Fortissimo 2 are three tranches of Application Experiments (~35 in total). An initial set is included in this proposal and two further sets will be obtained through Open Calls for proposals. These experiments will be driven by the requirements of first-time users (predominately SMEs) and will bring together actors from across the value chain, from cycle providers to domain experts via the Fortissimo Marketplace. This will enable innovative solutions to manufacturing challenges, leading to new and improved design processes, products and services. A key feature of Fortissimo 2 will be the adaption of the Marketplace to meet the needs of end-users. It will offer a responsive and reliable service to companies which want to access HPC and Big resources and expertise. Fortissimo 2 initially involves 732 months of effort, a total cost of €11.1m and EC funding of €10m over a duration of three years, commensurate with achieving its ambitious goals.

The objective of the Inno4scale project is to promote the efficient use of European HPC systems by identifying and funding the most promising novel algorithms for applications. Through this action, the project will facilitate the design and development of highly efficient application software for European Exascale computers, the most successful of which should later be taken up by science and industry, resulting in important performance gains. The project will design and implement a call for proposals based on the cascade funding mechanism, financing the most promising ideas on novel algorithms for applications to fully exploit and benefit from these valuable European Exascale resources. Proposals received will be evaluated by external experts based on their potential innovation and impact on the upcoming Exascale era, and the CASTIEL/EuroCC2 and PRACE networks will be used to ensure the widest possible reach of the call. The Inno4scale consortium, made up of two major European HPC research centres and two experienced partners in managing HPC-related programmes, is in the ideal position to carry out the project in an effective and efficient manner. The results of the selected innovation studies that will receive more than 4 million euros in total, include the development and publication of the novel algorithms to reduce the time-to-solution or energy-to-solution of existing computing problems, as well as to provide novel approaches for large-scale projects. In this way, the Inno4scale project will contribute to the realisation of the EuroHPC JU overall objectives and those specific for this call, as well as enable an optimal exploitation of European Exascale and Post-Exascale HPC systems.

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking is being created to support an integrated European HPC ecosystem covering all scientific and industrial value chain segments (hardware, software, applications, services, interconnections, and skills). HPC applications have a pivotal role in the HPC ecosystem: borrowing a promotional slogan used previously by the IEEE SC (supercomputing) conference – HPC Matters, primarily because the use of HPC (to address industrial, scientific and societal challenges) matters! As has been presented by the European Commission and the European Technology Platform for HPC (ETP4HPC) when establishing the contractual public private partnership (cPPP) for HPC, the European HPC Centres of Excellence (CoEs) constitute the applications-oriented pillar of the European HPC Initiative (complementing infrastructure and computing technology development). FocusCoE will contribute to the success of the EU HPC Ecosystem and the EuroHPC Initiative by supporting the EU HPC CoEs to more effectively fulfil their role within the ecosystem and initiative: ensuring that extreme scale applications result in tangible benefits for addressing scientific, industrial or societal challenges. It will do this by creating an effective platform for the CoEs to coordinate strategic directions and collaboration (addressing possible fragmentation of activities across the CoEs and coordinating interactions with the overall HPC ecosystem) and will provide support services for the CoEs in relation to both industrial outreach and promotion of their services and competences by acting as a focal point for users to discover those services.
